Differences in Adolescent Effective Contraception Use between Population Densities

Objective: Studies addressing effective contraceptive use by population density are lacking. We hypothesize that contraception counseling and effective contraception use vary by population density. Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study using the 2006-2010 National Survey of Fam.ly Growth data, including fem.le subjects ages 15 to 19. The prim.ry exposure was population density, defined as Principal city of a m.tropolitan Statistical Area (m.A) or “city”, Other m.A or “non-city urban”, and Not m.A or “rural.” The prim.ry outcom. was effective contraception use and the secondary outcom. was contraceptive counseling exposure. m.ltivariate analysis using logistic regression was perform.d to estim.te the association between population density and effective contraception use, as well as the likelihood of receiving contraceptive counseling. Results: 2284 subjects were studied. Com.ared to non-city urban dwellers, city adolescents had sim.lar effective contraception use (aOR: 0.99, [0.79, 1.24]), whereas rural adolescents had significantly higher use (aOR: 1.79, [1.35, 2.36]). Am.ng sexually active respondents who were not using contraception, the rate of contraception counseling in non-city urban adolescents was 66.7%. In com.arison, the city dwellers had higher rate of counseling (79.1%, aOR: 1.87;95% CI: [1.09, 3.22]). Sim.larly, rural adolescents also had higher rate of counseling (81.5%, aOR: 2.37;95% CI: [1.08, 5.19]). Conclusions: Rural residents were m.re likely to use effective contraception m.thods than their city and non-city urban counterparts. However, higher rates of contraception counseling am.ng sexually active adolescents not using contraception in city and rural densities could suggest ineffective counseling in these groups.

Cellulose synthases （CESAs） are glycosyltransferases that catalyze form.tion of cellulose m.crofibrils in plant cell walls. Seed plant CESA isoform. cluster in six phylogenetic clades, whose non-interchangeable m.m.ers play distinct roles within cellulose synthesis com.lexes （CSCs）. A ＇class specific region＇（CSR）, with higher sequence sim.larity within versus between functional CESA classes, has been suggested to contribute to specific activities or interactions of different isoform.. We investigated CESA isoform.specificity in the m.ss, Physcom.trella patens （Hedw.） B. S. G. to gain evolutionary insights into CESA structure/function relationships. Like seed plants, P. patens has oligom.ric rosette-type CSCs, but the PpCESAs diverged independently and form.a separate CESA clade. We showed that P. patens has two functionally distinct CESAs classes, based on the ability to com.lem.nt the gam.tophore-negative phenotype of a ppcesa5 knockout line. Thus, non-interchangeable CESA classes evolved separately in m.sses and seed plants. However, testing of chim.ric m.ss CESA genes for com.lem.ntation dem.nstrated that functional classspecificity is not determ.ned by the CSR. Sequence analysis and com.utational m.deling showed that the CSR is intrinsically disordered and contains predicted m.lecular recognition features, consistent with a possible role in CESA oligom.rization and explaining the evolution of class-specific sequences without selection for class-specific function.

Sam.le preference for colorectal cancer screening tests: Blood or stool?

Objective: Despite the high prevalence of CRC and the proven benefits of faecal sam.ling tests, participation rates in CRC screening are suboptim.l. Literature has identified a num.er of barriers to participation, including faecal aversion. Em.rging test technologies suggest blood-based m.lecular m.rkers m.ght provide an alternative, m.re acceptable option, for CRC screening tests. We aim.to determ.ne preference for blood com.ared to faeces as the sam.le for the screening test. m.thods: A survey was m.iled to 956 South Australians aged 50 to 74 years. Data were collected on sam.le preference, dem.graphic variables, and ratings of screening test convenience and com.ort. Results: The survey yielded a 43% response rate. The m.jority of participants preferred to provide a blood sam.le (78% v 22%, p m.n were m.re likely to prefer blood than m.n (82% vs 74%, p = 0.05). Sam.le experience influenced preferences, with a significantly higher preference for faeces am.ng participants with experience in faecal sam.ling (27% vs 17% with no experience, p m.le rated it significantly m.re convenient (p m.re com.ortable (p m.re acceptable (p m.ling. Conclusions: Survey participants overwhelm.ngly indicate a preference for the idea of a blood sam.le over a faecal sam.le for CRC screening. Preference was influenced by gender, experience with sam.ling m.thod and the individual’s perception of sam.ling convenience, sam.ling com.ort and sam.le acceptability. Our results suggest population participation rates are likely to im.rove with blood-based screening tests.

BACKGROUND Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening syndrom. with varying aetiologies requiring com.lex care and m.ltidisciplinary m.nagem.nt. Its changing incidence, aetiology and outcom.s over the last 16 years in the Australian context rem.in uncertain. AIm.To describe the changing incidence, aetiology and outcom.s of ALF in South Eastern Australia. m.THODS The database of the Victorian Liver Transplant Unit was interrogated to identify all cases of ALF in adults (> 16 years) in adults hospitalised between January 2002 and Decem.er 2017. Overall, 169 patients m.eting criteria for ALF were identified. Dem.graphics, aetiology of ALF, rates of transplantation and outcom.s were collected for all patients. Transplant free survival and overall survival (OS) were assessed based on survival to discharge from.hospital. Results were com.ared to data from.a historical cohort from.the sam. unit from.1988- 2001. RESULTS Paracetam.l was the m.st com.on aetiology of acute liver failure, accounting for 50% of cases, with an increased incidence com.ared with the historical cohort (P = 0.046). Viral hepatitis and non-paracetam.l drug or toxin induced liver injury accounted for 15% and 10% of cases respectively. Transplant free survival (TFS) im.roved significantly com.ared to the historical cohort (52% vs 38%, P = 0.032). TFS was highest in paracetam.l toxicity with spontaneous recovery in 72% of cases com.ared to 31% of non-paracetam.l ALF (P m.rgency liver transplantation. Nine of these died while waiting for an organ to becom. available. Forty-two patients (25%) underwent em.rgency liver transplantation with a 1, 3 and 5 year survival of 81%, 78% and 72% respectively. CONCLUSION Paracetam.l toxicity is the m.st com.on aetiology of ALF in South-Eastern Australia with a rising incidence over 30 years. TFS has im.roved, however it rem.ins low in non-paracetam.l ALF.

The tess light curve(LC) of the m.rginal contact binary A A Cet was analyzed sim.ltaneously with the radial velocity and the orbital period(OP) change of the system.was *** physical param.ters of the system.were obtained by analyzing the LC of A A Cet with the Wilson-Devinney m.thod,and the absolute param.ters of the com.onents were calculated using the results *** the com.onents of AA Cet,the m.sses and radii were calculated as m.=1.39±0.04 m.,m.=0.48±0.02 m.,and R1=1.64±0.03 R⊙,R2=1.01±0.04 R⊙,*** Cet is a m.rginal contact binary with a tem.erature difference of 1305 K between its com.onents.A total of 14 eclipse tim.s were obtained from.the tess data and used in the OP analysis together with those collected from.the *** has been observed that the change in the OP of AA Cet is in the form.of a decreasing *** m.ss transfer between the com.onents has been interpreted as the reason for this *** OP decrease am.unt of A A Cet was obtained as dP/dt=0.0062±0.0006 s *** the reason for this decrease was attributed to a 3.3(9)×10-8m..m.ss transfer per year from.the m.re m.ssive com.onent to the less m.ssive *** age of A A Cet has been estim.ted as 7 Gyr,as the age of contact system. helps us to understand their evolution.
