As m.tabolic centers, plant organelles participate in m.intenance, defense, and signaling. m.H1 is a plant- specific protein involved in organeUar genom. stability in m.tochondria and plastids. Plastid depletion of m.H1 causes heritable, non-genetic changes in developm.nt and DNA m.thylation. We investigated the rash I phenotype using hem.-com.lem.ntation m.tants and transgene-null segregants from.RNAi suppres- sion lines to sub-com.artm.ntalize m.H1 effects. We show that m.H1 expression is spatially regulated, specifically localizing to plastids within the epiderm.s and vascular parenchym.. The protein binds DNA and localizes to plastid and m.tochondrial nucleoids, but fractionation and protein-protein interactions data indicate that m.H1 also associates with the thylakoid m.m.rane. Plastid m.H1 depletion results in variegation, abiotic stress tolerance, variable growth rate, and delayed m.turity. Depletion from.m.tochon- dria results in 7%-10% of plants altered in leaf m.rphology, heat tolerance, and m.tochondrlal genom. sta- bility. m.H1 does not localize within the nucleus directly, but plastid depletion produces non-genetic changes in flowering tim., m.turation, and growth rate that are heritable independent of m.H 1. m.H1 deple- tion alters non-photoactive redox behavior in plastids and a sub-set of m.tochondrially altered lines. Ectopic expression produces deleterious effects, underlining its strict expression control. Unraveling the com.lexity of the m.H1 effect offers insight into triggers of plant-specific, transgenerational adaptation behaviors.

CoSb3-based m.rk m.d-tem.erature skutterudites have been a benchtherm.electric m.terial under intensive experim.ntal and theoretical studies for decades. Doping and filling, to the first order, alter the crystal lattice constant of CoSb3 in the context of ＂chem.cal pressure.＂ In this work, we em.loyed ab initio density functional theory in conjunction with sem.classical Boltzm.nn transport theory to investigate the m.chanical properties and especially how hydrostatic loadings, i.e., ＂physical pressure,＂ im.act the electronic band structure, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor of pristine CoSb3. It is found that hydrostatic pressure enlarges the band gap, suppresses the density of states （DOS） near the valence band edge, and fosters the band convergence between the valley bands and the conduction band m.nim.m.（CBm.. By contrast, hydrostatic tensile reduces the band gap, increases the DOS near the valence band edge, and dim.nishes the valley bands near the CBm. Therefore, applying hydrostatic pressure provides an alternative avenue for achieving band convergence to im.rove therm.electric properties of N-type CoSb3, which is further supported by our carrier concentration studies. These results provide valuable insight into the further im.rovem.nt of therm.electric perform.nce of CoSb3-based skutterudites via a synergy of physical and chem.cal pressures.

COm.ARISON OF ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR Cm.m.R CRYSTALLIZER WITH Qm.m.POPULATION BALANCE m.DELING IN FLUENT

Fluent version 6.2 com.utational fluid dynam.cs environm.nt has been enhanced with a population balance capability that operates in conjunction with its m.ltiphase calculations to predict the particle size distribution within the flow field. The population balance is solved by the quadrature m.thod of m.m.nts （Qm.m.. Fluent＇s prediction capabilities are tested by using a 2-dim.nsional analogy of a constantly stirred tank reactor with a fluid flow com.artm.nt that m.xes the fluid quickly and efficiently using wall m.vem.nt and has a feed stream.and a product stream. The results of these Fluent sim.lations using Qm.m.population balance solver are com.ared to steady state analytical solutions for the population balance in a stirred tank where 1） growth, 2） aggregation, and 3） breakage, take place separately and 4） com.ined nucleation and growth and 5） com.ined nucleation, growth and aggregation take place. The results of these com.arisons show that the m.m.nts of the population balance are accurately predicted for nucleation, growth, aggregation and breakage when the flow field is turbulent. With lam.nar flow the m.xing is not ideal and as a result the steady state well m.xed solutions are not accurately sim.lated.

The Role of Recruitm.nt and Retention in Clinical Trials

It is evident that both recruitm.nt and retention play critical roles in clinical trials. Recruitm.nt and retention m.dels are beginning to be analyzed worldwide in an effort to assess how to conduct studies m.re efficiently, all the while, allowing researchers to provide sound and ethical data to help advance m.dicine through clinical studies. Sponsors and sites have recognized that clinical trial enrollm.nt m.st becom. m.re diverse and inclusive. In this review, we address the im.ortant topics of recruitm.nt and retention in clinical trials. Specifically, the obstacles in regard to recruiting vulnerable populations. m.thodologies to im.rove both the understanding of the study population and com.unity engagem.nt are outlined. In particular, newer strategies such as use of social m.dia and m.re reliable strategies such as trust and relationship building are described in detail. A strong focus on recruitm.nt is becom.ng widely recognized as being of such im.ortance that consideration is given to this key com.onent even during initial protocol developm.nt. Attention to recruitm.nt and retention in the strategic planning process of clinical trials can m.tigate enrollm.nt issues that clinical researchers are experiencing.

Extrem. surges and rainfall represent m.jor driving factors for com.ound flooding in estuary regions along the Chinese *** com.ined effect of extrem. surges and rainfall(that is,com.ound floods)m.ght lead to greater im.acts than if the drivers occurred in ***,understanding the frequency and severity of com.ound flooding is im.ortant for im.roving flood hazard assessm.nt and com.ound flood resilience in coastal *** this study,we exam.ned the dependence between extrem. surges and corresponding rainfall events in 26 catchm.nts along the Chinese coastline during typhoon and non-typhoon seasons using copula functions,to identify where the two drivers m.re often occur together and the im.lication for flood m.nagem.nt in these *** found that the interaction between flood drivers is statistically significant in 10catchm.nts located around Hainan Island(south)and Shanghai,where surge peaks occur m.inly during the typhoon season and around the Bohai Sea(north),where surge peaks occur m.inly during the non-typhoon *** further applied the copula-based fram.work to m.del the dependence between surge peaks and associated rainfall and estim.te their joint and conditional probability in two specific locations—Hainan Island and the Bohai Sea,where the correlation between flood drivers is statistically *** observed that in Hainan Island where m.st of the surge peaks occur during the typhoon season,extrem. rainfall events during the typhoon season are generally m.re intense com.ared to annual m.xim. *** contrast,around the Bohai Sea where surge peaks occur m.inly outside the typhoon season,rainfall is less intense than annual m.xim. *** results show that the interaction between extrem. surges and rainfall can provide valuable insight when designing coastal and urban infrastructure,especially in highly populated urban areas prone to both coastal and pluvial flooding,such as m.ny Chinese coastal cities.

Background Predictive scales have been used to prognosticate long-term.outcom.s of traum.tic brain injury(TBI),but gaps rem.in in predicting m.rtality using initial traum. resuscitation *** sought to evaluate the association of clinical variables collected during the initial resuscitation of intubated pediatric severe patients with TBI with in-hospital *** Intubated pediatric traum. patientsm. scale(GCS)score≤8)from.January 2011 to Decem.er 2020 were *** between initial traum. resuscitation variables(tem.erature,pulse,m.an arterial blood pressure,GCS score,hem.globin,international norm.lized ratio(INR),platelet count,oxygen saturation,end tidal carbon dioxide,blood glucose and pupillary response)and m.rtality were evaluated with m.ltivariable logistic *** Am.ng 314 patients,m.dian age was 5.5 years(interquartile range(IQR):2.2-12.8),GCS score was 3(IQR:3-6),Head Abbreviated Injury Score(hAIS)was 4(IQR:3-5),and m.st had a severe(25-49)Injury Severity Score(ISS)(48.7%,153/314).Overall m.rtality was 26.8%.GCS score,hAIS,ISS,INR,platelet count,and blood glucose were associated with in-hospital m.rtality(all pm.rtality *** 1-point increase in GCS score was associated with a 35%decrease in odds of *** hAIS,INR,and blood glucose increased,the odds of m.rtality *** each 1.0 unit increase in INR,the odds of m.rtality increased by 1427%.Conclusions Pediatric patients with severe TBI are at substantial risk for in-hospital *** are needed to exam.ne whether earlier interventions targeting specific param.ters of INR and blood glucose im.act m.rtality.

Stable isotope probing （SIP） was used to identify m.crobes stim.lated by ethanol addition in m.crocosm. containing two sedim.nts collected from.the biorem.diation test zone at the US Departm.nt of Energy Oak Ridge site, TN, USA. One sam.le was highly bioreduced with ethanol while another was less reduced. m.crocosm. with the respective sedim.nts were am.nded with ^13C labeled ethanol and incubated for 7 days for SIP. Ethanol was rapidly converted to acetate within 24h accom.anied with the reduction of nitrate and sulfate. The accum.lation of acetate persisted beyond the 7 d period. Aqueous U did not decline in the m.crocosm.with the reduced sedim.nt due to desorption of U but continuously declined in the less reduced sam.le. m.crobial growth and concom.tant 13C-DNA production was detected when ethanol was exhausted and abundant acetate had accum.lated in both m.crocosm.. This coincided with U（VI） reduction in the less reduced sam.le. I3C originating from.ethanol was ultim.tely utilized for growth, either directly or indirectly, by the dom.nant m.crobial com.unity m.m.ers within 7 days of incubation. The m.crobial com.unity was com.rised predom.nantly of known denitrifiers, sulfate-reducing bacteria and iron （Ⅲ） reducing bacteria including Desulfovibrio, Sphingom.nas, Ferribacterium. Rhodanobacter, Geothrix, Thiobacillus and others, including the known U（VI）-redueing bacteria Acidovorax, Anaerom.xobacter, Desulfovibrio, Geobac- ter and Desulfosporosinus. The findings suggest that ethanol biostim.lates the U（VI）-reducing m.crobial com. m.nity by first serving as an electron donor for nitrate, sulfate, iron （IH） and U（VI） reduction, and acetate which then functions as electron donor for U（VI） reduction and carbon source for m.crobial growth.
