Effects of chronic epilepsy on heart rate variability A case-control study

bACKGROUND： Dysfunctional autonomic cardiac regulation is thought to be associated with high mortality in epileptic patients. ObjECTIVE： To explore changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic activities in epileptic patients with repetitive generalized tonic-clonic seizures by observing interictal heart rate. DESIGN, TIME AND SEI-I＇ING： A case-control study was performed at the buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital from july 2006 to May 2009. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 30 patients, comprising 15 males and 15 females, who presented with chronic epilepsy and repetitive generalized tonic-clonic seizures according to International League Against Epilepsy guidelines （ILAE, 1989）, were selected. In addition, 30 matched, healthy volunteers were selected as controls. METHODS： Lead I electrocardiogram was performed in the epilepsy and control groups for 5 minutes during a daytime interictal period. Frequency-domain analysis of heart rate variability was performed using fast Fourier transformation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Heart rate interval, high frequency （HF; 0.15-0.45 Hz） power, low frequency （LF; 0.04-0.15 Hz） power, and LF/（HF ＋ LF） expressed in normalized units （LF%）. RESULTS： Compared with the control group, the epilepsy group exhibited a significantly lower mean heart rate interval and HF power, but a significantly greater LF% （P〈 0.01）. There was no significant difference in LF power between the groups （P = 0.17）. CONCLUSION： Patients with chronic epilepsy exhibited faster heart rates during interictal periods, which could contribute to hiclher sympathetic and lower parasympathetic activities.

In addition to their value as cereal grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) are important cool-season annual forages and cover crops. Yearling steer (bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring following autumn establishment as for age cover crops after soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grain harvest. Replicated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-till seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubble in autumn, fertilized, and grazed the following spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuously stocked in spring with four yearling steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. In 2005, average daily gain (ADG) for steers grazing triticale exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for triticale by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat lost weight, while steers grazing triticale gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. based on the 3-year average animal gains valued at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for triticale and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing could be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional value to the system. based on this 3-year grazing trial, triticale was superior to wheat and likely will provide the most stable beef yearling performance across years with variable weather for the western Cornbelt USA.

Coating behavior and surface hardening of Pd_(77)Cu_6Si_(17) thin film metallic glass on AZ31 magnesium alloy

Pd77Cu6Si17(PCS) thin film metallic glasses(TFMGs) with high glass forming ability and hardness were selected as a hard coating for improving the surface hardness of AZ31 magnesium alloy. both microindentation and nanoindentation tests were conducted on specimens with various PCS film thicknesses from 30 to 2000 nm. The apparent hardness and the relative indentation depth(β) were integrated using a quantitative model. The interaction parameters involved and relative hardness values were extracted from iterative calculations. According to the results, surface hardness can be enhanced greatly by PCS TFMGs in the shallow region, followed by gradual decrease with increasing β ratio. In addition, specimens with thinner coatings(e.g., 200nm) showed greater substrate-film interaction and those with thick coatings(e.g., 2000nm) became prone to film cracking. The optimum TFMG coating thickness in this study was estimated to be around 200 nm.

Combustion characteristics and kinetics of anthracite with added chlorine

The combustion process of Yangquan anthracite（YQ） with the addition of 0.045wt%, 0.211wt%, 1.026wt%, and 2.982wt% chlorine was investigated using a thermogravimetric method from an ambient temperature to 1173 K in an air atmosphere. Results show that the YQ combustion characteristics are not significantly affected by an increase in chlorine content. Data acquired for combustion conversion are then further processed for kinetic analysis. Average apparent activation energies determined using the model-free method（specifically the KAS method） are 103.025, 110.250, 99.906, and 110.641 k j/mol, respectively, and the optimal kinetic model for describing the combustion process of chlorine-containing YQ is the nucleation kinetic model, as determined by the z（α） master plot method. The mechanism function of the nucleation kinetic model is then employed to estimate the pre-exponential factor, by making use of the compensation effect. The kinetic models to describe chlorine-containing YQ combustion are thus obtained through advanced determination of the optimal mechanism function, average apparent activation energy, and the pre-exponential factor.

Stability evaluation of reference genes for real-time quantitative PCR normalization in Spodoptera frugiperda(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)

Real-time quantitative PCR(qPCR)is a reliable and widely used technique for analyzing the expression profiles of target genes in different species,and reference genes with stable expressions have been introduced for the normalization of the ***,stability evaluation should be considered as the initial step for qPCR *** fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda(***)(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)is a polyphagous pest that consumes many plant species and seriously threatens corn production around the ***,no studies thus far have examined the stability of reference genes in this *** this study,the expression profiles of the eight candidate reference genes of Actin,elongation factor 1 alpha(EF1α),elongation factor 2(EF2),glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase(GAPDH),ribosomal protein L3(RPL3),ribosomal protein L13(RPL13),alpha-tubulin(α-TUb),and beta-1-tubulin(β-1-TUb)were obtained from *** in different samples and the stability was evaluated byΔCt,bestKeeper,geNorm,NormFinder,and RefFinder *** results of pairwise variation(V)calculated by GeNorm indicated two reference genes could be selected for ***,the combinations of the most stable reference genes for different experimental conditions of *** were shown as follows:EF2 and RPL13 for developmental stages,RPL3 andβ-1-TUb for larval tissue samples,EF2 and EF1αfor the larval samples treated with different temperatures,RPL3 and EF1αfor the larval samples under starvation stress,and RPL13 and EF1αfor all the *** results lay the foundation for the normalization of qPCR analyses in *** and could help guarantee the accuracy of subsequent research.

Two New Antimony(Ⅲ)Chloride Hybrids Composed of Mononuclear[SbCl_(6)]^(3-)Unit and Ionic Liquid Cations with Different Length of Alkyl Chain

Two new hybrid chloroantimonates,namely,[Prmim]_(3)SbCl_(6)(1,Prmim=1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium)and[Hmim]_(3)SbCl_(6)(2,Hmim=1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium),were synthesized in ionic liquids(ILs)with the yields of 97%and 72%,***-crystal X-ray diffraction(SCXRD)study reveals that 1 crystallizes in monoclinic,space group Pn with a=15.2988(12),b=13.6388(10),c=15.6761(13)A,β=98.677(7)°,V=3233.5(4)A^(3),Z=4,D_(c)=1.459 g·cm^(-3),F(000)=1440,μ=1.370 mm^(-1),R=0.0589 and wR=0.1366(I>2σ(I));2 crystallizes in the hexagonal space group of P63 with a=27.7471(6),b=27.7471(6),c=8.9811(2)A,V=5988.2(3)A^(3),Z=6,D_(c)=1.391 g·cm^(-3),F(000)=2592,μ=1.121 mm^(-1),R=0.0420 and wR=0.0726(I>2σ(I)).The photophysical properties of the title compounds were studied by solid-state optical absorption,photoluminescent excitation/emission(PLE/PL),PL decay spectra and photoluminescent quantum yield(PLQY).1 and 2 exhibit PL peaks at 627 and 607 nm,Stokes shifts of 257 and 242 nm,and PLQY of 32.5%and 49.2%,*** distinct photo physical characteristics of 1 and 2 are highly related to the distortion extent of the[SbCl_(6)]^(3-)unit.
