Little is known a.out the diversity a.d sta.us of endemic freshwa.er fishes which a.e va.ua.le bio-indica.ors of ecosystem hea.th a.d a. integra. pa.t of a.country’s na.ura. herita.e. Some of the less studied a.ea. in the Philippines a.e the river systems in the Cordillera.which a.e equa.ly importa.t a. tha. of the other freshwa.er systems in the country. a.bura.a. River in Ka.a.ga., Benguet is one of the rivers in the sa.d region. Thus a.sessment study of the diversity of ma.ro a.ua.ic species wa. conducted to provide a.ba.eline da.a.in the formula.ion of resource ma.a.ement stra.egies a.d polices. By using a.mixture of qua.ita.ive a.d qua.tita.ive resea.ch methods, the study determined a.d identified the presence of ma.ro species in the study a.ea. It a.plied the Na.iona. Stock a.sessment Progra. (NSa.) procedures in the ga.hering of sa.ples while identifica.ion a.d determina.ion of fish stocks were done by morphometric a.a.ysis of the ca.ch with the help of a.a.la.le references a.d a.sista.ce of experts. This is la.er verified through submission of sa.ples to the Na.iona. Fisheries Resea.ch Development Institute (NFRDI) a. pa.t of the NSa. a.ea. for DNa.a.a.ysis. The mea.urement of the impa.ts of huma. a.tivities to the river systems wa. done using the checklist method by Smith a.d Smith. The study found tha. there is low biodiversity of ma.ro a.ua.ic species in the a.ea.beca.se of the presence of introduced species, illega. fishing pra.tices, qua.rying a.d mining a.tivities. There a.e a.so no indigenous or tra.itiona. ma.a.ement mea.ures conducted to conserve the river ecosystem biodiversity. The study recommended tha. simila. study be done in other a.ea. of the river a.d tha. the government a.encies to underta.e fisheries progra.s which would regula.e the exploita.ion a.d utiliza.ion a.d a.low regenera.ion of ma.ro a.ua.ic species in the river system.
