Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for Miniature Hydroponic Lettuce

There is growing concern about food safety, environmental impact, and efficient energy usage in agricultural production systems. Producing lettuce under artificial lighting could be a solution addressing these concerns. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer the advantages of a narrow light spectrum, low power consumption, and little heat production. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different light sources on the growth of miniature “Tom Thumb” butterhead lettuce in a non-circulating hydroponic system. Lettuce seedlings, started in Oasis Horticubes, were transferred to net pots in containers with a hydroponic nutrient solution. The lettuce was grown in a lab under three light treatments—blue LEDs, red LEDs, and fluorescent lights. At the end of the study, fluorescent lights resulted in greater root dry weight than blue LEDs and red LEDs. Total plant dry weight under fluorescent lights was greater than under red LEDs. There were no significant differences in shoot dry weight and plant height among the treatments. Percent partitioning of dry weight to shoots was greatest with red LEDs, followed by blue LEDS, and fluorescent lights. Percent partitioning of dry weight to roots was greatest with fluorescent lights, followed by blue LEDS, and red LEDs. Leaf chlorophyll content was greater under blue LEDs and fluorescent lights than red LEDs. The pH of the nutrient solution of the blue LED and the fluorescent light treatments were greater than the red LED treatment. Electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution of the fluorescent light treatment was greater than the blue LED treatment and the red LED treatment. In conclusion, LEDs could provide an alternative lighting source for miniature lettuce production.

Space-Time Decomposition of Kalman Filter

We present an innovative interpretation of Kalman filter(KF)combining the ideas of Schwarz domain decomposition(DD)and parallel in time(PinT)*** we call it *** contrast to standard DD approaches which are already incorporated in KF and other state estimation models,implementing a straightforward data parallelism inside the loop over time,DD-KF ab-initio partitions the whole model,including filter equations and dynamic model along both space and time directions/*** a consequence,we get local KFs reproducing the original filter at smaller dimensions on local ***,sub problems could be solved in *** order to enforce the matching of local solutions on overlapping regions,and then to achieve the same global solution of KF,local KFs are slightly modified by adding a correction term keeping track of contributions of adjacent subdomains to overlapping *** a correction term balances localization errors along overlapping regions,acting as a regularization constraint on local ***,such a localization excludes remote observations from each analyzed location improving the conditioning of the error covariance *** dynamic model we consider shallow water equations which can be regarded a consistent tool to get a proof of concept of the reliability assessment of DD-KF in monitoring and forecasting of weather systems and ocean currents.

The lack of experimental data and / or limited experimental information concerning both surface and transport properties of liquid alloys often require the prediction of these quantities. An attempt has been made to link the thermophysical properties of a ternary Cu-Sn-Ti system and its binary Cu-Sn, Cu-Ti and SnoTi subsystems with the bulk through the study of the concentration dependence of various thermodynamic, structural, surface and dynamic properties in the frame of the statistical mechanical theory in conjunction with the quasi-lattice theory （QLT）. This formalism provides valuable qualitative insight into mixing processes that occur in molten alloys.

According to magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies,brain white matter(WM)abnormalities have been suggested to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder(MDD)and related suicidal ***,MRI findings may be limited by low spatial resolution;therefore,an important contribution to the understanding of the role and significance of WM alterations derived by the development of the most recent magnetic resonance techniques,such as diffusion tensor imaging(DTI).Several DTI studies reported an association between altered WM integrity and MDD/suicidal *** WM abnormalities may be located in neural circuits critically implicated in emotional processes and mood regulation resulting in enhanced vulnerability to psychiatric *** abnormalities detected using DTI may contribute to functional deficits and help to clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying MDD as well as suicidal *** a clinical point of view,research also suggested that affective temperaments may play a relevant role in the psychopathological characteristics of mood disorders,clinical trajectory of episodes and polarity,long‑term outcome and ***,only few studies investigated the association between affective temperaments and WM abnormalities and discussed their possible implications in patients with MDD and suicidal *** a comprehensive search of Medline database,the aim of the present study was to critically review the current literature on the association between WM alterations as assessed by MRI and DTI techniques,affective temperaments,MDD and suicidal behavior.

Clinical outcomes of ERCP-related retroperitoneal perforations

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography（ERCP）-related perforations represent rare but often severe conditions. While lesions with intraperitoneal perforation have an almost imperative indication to surgery, whether or not to manage retroperitoneal perforations surgically is still an area of debate. The aim of the present work was to review the available clinical evidence on the operatively and medi cally treated ERCP-related retroperitoneal perforations. From MEDLINE/Pub Med databases 137 patients with retroperito neal perforation were included from 12 studies that met the selection criteria for data investigation and analysis. Twenty four patients were treated by prompt surgery; 113 were primarily managed conservatively and about 20% of these patients required surgery subsequently. Overall, the morbid ity and mortality were 15.4% and 6.6%, respectively. Although most patients with retroperitoneal perforation may benefit from a non-operative management, a considerable number of patients fail to respond to medical treatment and require sur gery afterwards. Identifying those patients who are at highest risk of poor outcome after conservative treatment should be considered a research priority.

To the Editor： The efficacy of minimally invasive techniques for pulmonary lobectomy is gaining a great interest in literature. Recently, new surgical strategies and technical improvements have been reported for video-assisted thoracic surgery （VATS）. Furthermore, postoperative physiotherapeutic aspects are a source of interest; it has been observed that the walking distance, calculated as the mean score on the 6-min walk test （6MWT） preoperatively, represents a predictive measure for the onset of possible postoperative complications following pulmonary lobectomy. Nevertheless, the suitability of the 6MWT during the early postoperative period is limited by common functional limitations that are normally present after surgery, including the possible need for oxygen supplementation during the first days postoperatively and the presence of thoracic drainage.

The Rheological and Extrusion Behaviour of Blends Based on Phenolphthalein Poly(ether-ether-sulfone)and Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymer

A novel engineering thermoplastic, phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulfone)(PES C) was blended with a commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP), Vectra A950, up to 30 weight percent of TLCP. A rheometrics dynamic spectrometer (RDS Ⅱ) and a CEAST capillary rheometer, a rheoscope 1000 were employed to investigate the melt rheology and extrusion behaviour at both the low and high shearing rates. The morphologies of the blends under different shearing were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and correlated to the observed rheology. The principal normal stress differences measured with cone and plate geometry give a temperature independent correlation for both blend and PES C when they are plotted against shear stress. But the extrudate swell of the blends showed a strong temperature dependence at each shear stress. The concentration dependence of extrudate swell shows a contrary behaviour to that of the inorganic filled system. A reasonable hypothesis based on the relaxation and disorientation of TLCP during flowing in the capillary and exiting was given to explain it. The melt fracture was checked after extrusion from capillary and was discussed.

Major depressive disorder(MDD)is associated with a significant disability worldwide,relevant psychosocial impairment,and increased risk of suicidal behavior.[1]Although multiple psychoactive compounds are now available,[2]more than 20%of MDD patients treated with traditional antidepressant drugs do not benefit from complete recovery and are affected by treatment-resistance.[3]Traditional antidepressant medications may be ineffective and sometimes worsen depressive symptoms in a vulnerable subpopulation of patients with subthreshold hypomanic symptoms that may be better included in the bipolar spectrum rather than MDD.[4]
