An evaluation of mass,number concentration,chemical composition and types of particles in a cafeteria before and after the passage of an antismoking law

This study assessed air quality indicators before and after enactment of the Spanish anti-smoking law. Mass and number concentrations and the chemical composition of particles were evaluated. Microscopy analyses were also conducted. Real time concentrations of PMlo, PM2.s, PM1 and ultrafine particles were measured under ventilated and non-ventilated conditions and PMlo samples were collected for detailed inorganic and organic chemical characterization. Before enactment of the law in 2010, tobacco smoke produced significant indoor ambient particulate matter pollution, with elevated particulate matter mass concentrations （PM10 and PM1 concentrations of 122-220 and 48-85 Dg/m3, respectively） and ultrafine particle numbers （75,000 and 48,000 cm ~ under ventilated and non-ventilated conditions, respectively）. Typical tobacco smoke tracers including iso- and anteiso-alkanes and elements including La and Ce from the ignition of lighters were abundant. Additionally, several toxic substances derived from tobacco smoke, including Cd （3.1 ng/m3） and benzo[a]pyrene （1.0 ng/m3） were present at concentrations approximately 10 times greater than those measured after enactment of the anti-smoking law. The anti-smoking law sig- nificantly reduced exposure to potentially toxic compounds by approximately 90%. This law is expected to have a positive health impact, particularly for people who spend considerable time in affected envi- ronments, such as employees.

Malnutrition is described as a state of insufficient intake of energy,protein and other nutrients leading to changes in body composition(weight loss,reduced fat-free mass)as well as adverse functional and clinical outcomes.[1]Depending on the assessments and definition used,the prevalence in older patients ranges between 12%in communitydwelling adults to 60%of patients in geriatric care facilities.[2–5]Older populations are at high risk of nutritional deficiencies because of risk factors such as multimorbidity,polypharmacy,cognitive and physical decline,poor appetite,depressive syndromes and socioeconomic changes.[4,6].

Lung Cancer Prediction from Elvira Biomedical Dataset Using Ensemble Classifier with Principal Component Analysis

Machine learning algorithms (MLs) can potentially improve disease diagnostics, leading to early detection and treatment of these diseases. As a malignant tumor whose primary focus is located in the bronchial mucosal epithelium, lung cancer has the highest mortality and morbidity among cancer types, threatening health and life of patients suffering from the disease. Machine learning algorithms such as Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Naïve Bayes (NB) have been used for lung cancer prediction. However they still face challenges such as high dimensionality of the feature space, over-fitting, high computational complexity, noise and missing data, low accuracies, low precision and high error rates. Ensemble learning, which combines classifiers, may be helpful to boost prediction on new data. However, current ensemble ML techniques rarely consider comprehensive evaluation metrics to evaluate the performance of individual classifiers. The main purpose of this study was to develop an ensemble classifier that improves lung cancer prediction. An ensemble machine learning algorithm is developed based on RF, SVM, NB, and KNN. Feature selection is done based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). This algorithm is then executed on lung cancer data and evaluated using execution time, true positives (TP), true negatives (TN), false positives (FP), false negatives (FN), false positive rate (FPR), recall (R), precision (P) and F-measure (FM). Experimental results show that the proposed ensemble classifier has the best classification of 0.9825% with the lowest error rate of 0.0193. This is followed by SVM in which the probability of having the best classification is 0.9652% at an error rate of 0.0206. On the other hand, NB had the worst performance of 0.8475% classification at 0.0738 error rate.

Nowadays, lamb meat represents only 7% of all meat produced in the world. In recent years the demand for standardized lamb meat cuts has been considered of great importance and the marketing occurs predominantly in the form of frozen cuts. Herewith, the main of this work was to evaluate the stability and safety of lamb meat during frozen storage. Meats were vacuum packed in high barrier multilayer plastic iflms and stored during 12 mon at （-18±1）℃. The meat stability was assessed by physical and chemical （lipid oxidation, objective color, pH value, cooking losses and instrumental texture）, microbiological （total count of psychrotrophic, coliform count at 45℃, coagulase-positive staphylococci and the presence of Salmonella） and sensory analysis （acceptance test and visual evaluation）. The vacuum packed lamb meat remained stable as to most physical and chemical indexes. Microbiological indexes showed good stability throughout the storage period according to Brazilian legislation standards to pathogenic microorganisms. Although a signiifcant reduction in tenderness （shear force increase from 3 to 8 kg）, it showed a good sensorial acceptance for all attributes tested, including texture, with scores of around 7 （like moderately） during the 12 mon of storage. Therefore, it can be concluded that, under the conditions applied in this study, lamb meat presents a shelf life of at least 12 mon when stored at-18℃.

Little is known about the long-term survivors of acute arsenic intoxication. We present here a clinical case report of a man with chronic hepatitis B virus （HBV） infection who developed hepatocellular carcinoma four years after acute arsenic poisoning. HBsAg was detected in serum in 1990 when he voluntarily donated blood. In 1991, the patient suffered from severe psychological depression that led him to attempt suicide by massive ingestion of an arsenic-containing rodenticide. He survived with polyneuropathy and paralysis of the lower limbs, and has been wheelchair-bound since then. During participation in a follow-up study conducted among HBV carders, abdominal ultrasound detected a two-centimeter liver mass consistent with hepatocellular carcinoma. The tumor was confirmed by computed tomography （CT） and magnetic resonance image （MRI）. Because of his significant comorbidity, the patient received palliative treatment with transarterial lipiodol chemoembolization （TACE） on three occasions （1996, 1997 and 1999）. At his most recent visit in lay 2005, the patient was asymptomatic, liver enzymes were normal and the tumor was in remission on ultrasound.
