Reactive oxygen species(ROS)production is a by-product of mitochondrial activity and is necessary for the acquisition of the capacitated state,a requirement for functional ***,an increase in oxidative stress,due to an abnormal production of ROS,has been shown to be related to loss of sperm function,highlighting the importance of an accurate detection of sperm ROS,given the specific nature of this *** this work,we tested a variety of commercially available fluorescent probes to detect ROS and reactive nitrogen species(RNS)in human sperm,to define their *** both flow cytometry(FC)and fluorescence microscopy(FM),we confirmed that MitoSOX™Red and dihydroethidium(DHE)detect superoxide anion(as determined using antimycin A as a positive control),while DAF-2A detects reactive nitrogen species(namely,nitric oxide).For the first time,we also report that RedoxSensor™Red CC-1,CellROX®Orange Reagent,and MitopYl seem to be mostly sensitive to hydrogen peroxide,but not ***,mean fluorescence intensity(and not percentage of labeled cells)is the main parameter that can be reproducibly monitored using this type of methodology.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound evaluation of hepatic microvascular changes in liver diseases

AIM： To assess if software assisted-contrast-enhanced ultrasonography （CEUS） provides reproducible perfu- sion parameters of hepatic parenchyma in patients af- fected by chronic liver disease. METHODS： Forty patients with chronic viral liver dis- ease, with （n = 20） or without （n = 20） cirrhosis, and 10 healthy subjects underwent CEUS and video re- cordings of each examination were then analysed with Esaote＇s Qontrast software. CEUS dedicated software Qontrast was used to determine peak （the maximum signal intensity）, time to peak （TTp）, region of blood value （RBV） proportional to the area under the time- intensity curve, mean transit time （MTT） measured in seconds and region of blood flow （RBF）. RESULTS： Qontrast-assisted CEUS parameters dis- played high inter-observer reproducibility （κ： coefficients of 0.87 for MTT and 0.90 TTp）. When the region of in-terest included a main hepatic vein, Qontrast-calculated TTp was significantly shorter in cirrhotic patients （vs non-cirrhotics and healthy subjects）（71.0 ± 11.3 s vs 82.4±15.6 s, 86.3±20.3 s, p 〈 0.05）. MTIs in the patients with liver cirrhosis were significantly shorter than those of controls （111.9±22.0 s vs 139.4±39.8 s, p 〈 0.05）, but there was no significant difference between the cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic groups （111.9± 22.0 s vs 110.3 ±14.6 s）. peak enhancement in the patients with liver cirrhosis was also higher than that observed in controls （23.9± 5.9 vs 18.9±7.1, p = 0.05）. There were no significant intergroup differences in the RBVs and RBFs. CONCLUSION： Qontrast-assisted CEUS revealed re- producible differences in liver perfusion parameters during the development of hepatic fibrogenesis.

Inter-group conflicts are common among many group-living animals and involve potentially complex motivations and *** living in multilevel societies offer a good opportunity to study inter-group *** study is the first to explore the function of sex-specific participation during inter-group conflicts within a multilevel society at the individual *** Sichuan snub-nosed monkey(Rhinopithecus roxellana)is an endangered seasonal breeding species living in a multilevel *** Sep 2007 to May 2008 we recorded 290 inter-group conflicts of a free-ranging provisioned band of *** in the Qinling Mountains of China to investigate the function of individual aggression during inter-group *** findings show that adult males were the main participants in inter-group conflicts,while females took part in them only *** male participation rate during the mating season,when adult females were estrous,was significantly higher than that during the non-mating ***,males directed their aggression to other males,and directed more intense aggression towards bachelor males than towards other resident *** both sexes,the participation rate as initiators was higher in the winter than that in the spring;and there was a significant positive correlation between group size and the participation rate as *** results suggest that inter-group aggression in Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys is linked to both mate defense and resource defense.

Anatomical variation of five plant species along an elevation gradient in Mexico City basin within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Mexico

Change in environmental conditions with altitudinal gradients induces morpho-anatomical variations in plants that have been poorly documented in intertropical regions. Five species with three life forms, cryptophyte(Alchemilla procumbens, Geranium seemannii), hemicryptophyte(Acaena elongata, Lupinus montanus), and phanerophyte(Symphoricarpos microphyllus), distributed along an altitudinal gradient in the Sierra Nevada of central Mexico, were studied. The aims were to identify and evaluate their morpho-anatomical modifications under the hypothesis that the sizes of individuals and of their wood and leaf cell types decrease as elevation increases. Three individuals per species per site were collected at seven locations along the altitudinal gradient(2949-3952 m). Their morpho-anatomical characters were analyzed through multiple regression analyses. Elevation was the variable that best explained anatomical changes in the leaf and wood ofthe five species. Canopy density and potassium content in the soil also contributed to explain the variation in anatomical variables along the gradient. As elevation increased a bimodal pattern was observed in various anatomical characters as in the leaf width of A. elongata, A. procumbens and G. seemannii and in the vessel diameter of A. procumbens, G. seemannii, and L. montanus. Other features as the vessel diameter of A. elongata, the fiber length of S. microphyllus, and the ray width of A. elongata increased as the elevation increased. Anatomical traits have a tendency to decrease in size but just toward the end of the gradient, which is probably related to changes in canopy density. The plant response to the altitudinal gradient is more focused on anatomical adaptations than morphological variation; it is also species dependent.

Increasing dietary fiber intake in terms of kiwifruit improves constipation in Chinese patients

AIM： To investigate if increased dietary fiber, in terms of kiwifruit, is effective in Chinese constipated patients. METHODS： 33 constipated patients and 20 healthy volunteers were recruited for a 4-wk treatment of kiwi fruit twice daily. Response during wk 1-4 was defined as an increase in complete spontaneous bowl, motion （CSBM）≥ 1/wk. Secondary efficacy included response during wk 1-4, individual symptoms and scores of bowel habits and constipation. Responses were compared with the baseline run-in period. Colonic transit time and anorectal manometry were performed before and after treatment. RESULTS： Responder rate was 54.5% in the constipated group. The mean CSBM increased after treatment （2.2±2.6 vs 4.4± 4.6, p = 0.013）. There was also improvement in the scores for bothersomeness of constipation （p = 0.02）, and satisfaction of bowel habit （p = 0.001）, and decreased in days of laxative used （p = 0.003）. There was also improvement in transit time （p = 0.003） and rectal sensation （p 〈 0.05）. However, there was no change in the bowel symptoms or anorectal physiology in the healthy subjects. CONCLUSION： Increasing dietary fiber intake is effective in relieving chronic constipation in Chinese population.

Effect of Sn precursor on the synthesis of SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles via polymeric precursor method

SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles were synthesized using the polymeric precursor method with different Sn salt precursors： SnCl2.2H2O, SnCl4.5H20, or Sn citrate. Sb2O3 was used as the precursor of Sb, and the molar ratio of nsn：nsb was held constant. FTIR and TGA/DTA were used to examine the influence of the Sn precursor on the formation and thermal decomposition of the Sn and Sn-Sb complexes. The calcination products obtained from heating the Sn and Sn-Sb complexes at 500℃ in air were analyzed using XRD and TEM analysis. The results revealed that the SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 formation temperatures depended on the nature of the Sn precursor. The calcination products were found to be SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles, which crystallized in a tetragonal cassiterite structure with a highly preferred （110） planar orientation. The Sn precursor and the presence of Sb in the SnO2 matrix strongly influenced the crystallinity and lattice parameters.
