Weight regain after intragastric balloon for pre-surgical weight loss

BACKGROUND Over one-third of Americans carry the diagnosis of obesity,many also with obesity-related *** can place patients at increased risk of operative and postoperative *** intragastric balloon has been shown to aid in minor weight loss,however its weight recidivism in patients requiring short interval weight loss has not been well *** To evaluate weight loss,ability to undergo successful elective surgery after intragastric balloon placement,and weight management after balloon *** This study is a retrospective review of patients in a single academic institution undergoing intragastric balloon placement from 2019-2023 to aid in weight loss prior to undergoing elective *** outcomes including weight loss,duration of balloon placement,successful elective surgery,weight regain postballoon and post-procedure complications were *** criteria included those with balloon in place at time of *** Thirty-three patients completed intragastric balloon therapy from 2019-2023 as a bridge to elective *** patients were required to participate in a 12-month weight management program to be eligible for balloon *** surgeries included incisional hernia repair,umbilical hernia repair,inguinal hernia repair,and knee and hip *** average age at placement was 53 years±11 years,majority(91%)were *** average duration of intragastric balloon therapy was 186 days±41 *** average weight loss was 14.0 kg±7.4 kg and with an average percent excess body weight loss of 30.0%(7.9%-73.6%).Over half of the patients(52.0%)achieved the goal of 30-50 lbs(14-22 kg)weight ***-one patients(64%)underwent their intended elective surgery,2 patients(6%)deferred surgery due to symptom relief with weight loss ***-one of the patients(64%)have documented weights in 3 months after balloon removal,in these patients the majority(76%)gained weight after balloon *** pat

Downward transport of stratospheric air into the troposphere(identified as stratospheric intrusions)could potentially modify the radiation budget and chemical of the Earth's surface *** the highest and largest plateau on earth,the Tibetan Plateau including the Himalayas couples to global climate,and has attracted widespread attention due to rapid warming and cryospheric *** studies recognized strong stratospheric intrusions in the Himalayas but are poorly understood due to limited direct evidences and the complexity of the meteorological dynamics of the third ***^(35)S is a radioactive isotope predominately produced in the lower stratosphere and has been demonstrated as a sensitive chemical tracer to detect stratospherically sourced air mass in the planetary boundary ***,we report 6-month(April–September 2018)observation of^(35)S in atmospheric sulfate aerosols(^(35)SO_(4)^(2-))collected from a remote site in the Himalayas to reveal the stratospheric intrusion phenomenon as well as its potential impacts in this *** the sampling campaign,the^(35)SO_(4)^(2-)concentrations show an average of 1,070±980 atoms/m^(3).In springtime,the average is 1,620±730 atoms/m^(3),significantly higher than the global existing data measured so *** significant enrichments of^(35)SO_(4)^(2-)measured in this study verified the hypothesis that the Himalayas is a global hot spot of stratospheric intrusions,especially during the springtime as a consequence of its unique geology and atmospheric *** combined with the ancillary evidences,e.g.,oxygen-17 anomaly in sulfate and modeling results,we found that the stratospheric intrusions have a profound impact on the surface ozone concentrations over the study region,and potentially have the ability to constrain how the mechanisms of sulfate oxidation are affected by a change in plateau atmospheric properties and *** study provides new observational constraints on stra

On the Range of Action of Adult Culex pipiens s.l.

Mosquitoes are an interesting topic due to their medical importance, as they play an active role in the transmission of many pathogens and parasites, acting as vectors for various pathologies that are deadly to humans, such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, West Nile virus, encephalitis and malaria, among many others that are less common. In terms of morbidity and mortality caused by vector-borne diseases, mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals for humanity and, although they also play a role in the ecosystem as a food source for other organisms, their importance for public health cannot be overlooked. As highly efficient vectors, they put more than three billion people at risk, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions as well as in Europe, since heat waves and flooding are becoming more frequent and severe, and summers are getting longer and warmer, accelerating mosquito development, biting rates, and the incubation of the pathogens within their bodies. Female mosquitoes bite to acquire proteins for the development of their ovaries and eggs and, in the process, acquire pathogens and/or parasites from one vertebrate host and transmit them to another, usually after a short period of replication. Three of their four life stages are lived in still freshwater, so it is crucial to understand their range of action when they reach adulthood and leave the water, in order to plan and implement local prevention measures. A set of georeferenced abundance data collected in mainland Portugal over seven years was linked to cartographed water bodies in a geographic information system to estimate the distances at which Culex pipiens s.l. had a significant presence, with criteria based on the size of the catches. The result allows for an estimate of the fly range of those mosquitoes, which can be used to focus countermeasures.

Repeatability of decision-making behaviour in male threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus： Effects of dummy vs. live stimuli

Individuals select from a number of behaviours when responding to various situations and the decisions they make may affect their fitness. The costs and benefits of these responses vary among individuals causing them to differ even in identical situations. One example of this type of situation is when territorial males encounter both a male and female simultaneously, gene- rating a trade-off that likely leads to individual differences due to differing costs of various actions among males. This situation commonly occurs in threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus. However, for selection to act effectively, individuals must behave in a consistent manner and measuring repeatability can aid in understanding how selection may shape such trade-offs. Males of this species exhibit consistent individual differences in their response to dummy males and females but it is unknown ff patterns are similar when feedback from the stimuli is present. To assess this, male threespine stickleback were tested with dummy and live male and female conspecifics, presented separately and simultaneously. While the same trends were found re- gardless of stimulus type, males were more aggressive towards the live conspecifics than to the dummies. Repeatability values were similar within a treatment regardless of whether live or dummy conspecifics were used, suggesting that individuals show the same level of consistency. This study adds to our understanding of consistent individual differences by demonstrating that feed- back may not affect responses to conflicting stimuli and that male threespine stickleback respond in a consistent manner to both dummy and live stimuli

Diesel and welding aerosols in an underground mine

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)conducted a study in an isolated zone of an underground mine to characterize aerosols generated by:(1)a diesel-powered personnel carrier vehicle operated over a simulated light-duty cycle and(2)the simulated repair of existing equipment using manual metal arc welding(MMAW).Both the diesel-powered vehicle and MMAW process contributed to concentrations of nano and ultrafine aerosols in the mine *** welding process also contributed to aerosols with electrical mobility and aerodynamic mobility count median diameters of approximately 140 and 480 nm,*** welding particles collected on the filters contained carbon,iron,manganese,calcium,and aluminum.

Metrics for macroscale invasion and dispersal patterns

Aim The ability to quantitatively measure the continuum of macroscale patterns of species invasion is a first step toward deeper understand-ing of their causal *** took advantage of two centuries worth of herbarium data,to evaluate a set of metrics to measure macroscale patterns,allowing cross-species comparisons of inva-sive expansion across large geographic *** We used herbarium specimens to reconstruct county-level invasion histories for two non-native plants(Alliaria petiolata and lonicera japonica),with distinct spatiotemporal distribution patterns over the past two *** county centroids from species’ini-tial occurrences,we quantified point pattern metrics from multiple disciplines(*** crime analysis,landscape ecology etc.)that are historically used at smaller spatial scales,to evaluate their abil-ity to detect macroscale spatial diffusion and amount of directional *** were further assessed for their ease of use,data requirements,independence from other metrics and intuitiveness of *** Findings We identified four suitable metrics for distinguishing differences in spatial patterns:(i)standard distance,(ii)number of patches,(iii)Euclidean nearest neighbor summary class statistic coefficient of variation and(iv)mean center that when applied to county-level presence data allowed us to determine the directions by which distributions expanded and if distributions increased via outward expansion,infilling and/or jump dispersal *** metrics when compared during the same invasion phase are capable of quantifying macroscale variability among species in their distri-butional and dispersal *** able to quantify differences among species in these patterns is important in understanding the drivers of species dispersal *** metrics therefore repre-sent a simple yet thorough toolset for achieving this goal.

Removal of saxitoxin and anatoxin-a by PAC in the presence and absence of microcystin-lR and/or cyanobacterial cells

Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-lR(MC),saxitoxin(STX),and anatoxin-a(ANTX-a)which are harmful to humans and other *** removal efficiencies of STX and ANTX-a by powdered activated carbon(PAC)was investigated,aswell as when MC-lR and cyanobacteriawere *** conductedwith distilled water and then source water,using the PAC dosages,rapid mix/flocculation mixing intensities and contact times of two drinking water treatment plants in northeast *** pH 8 and 9,STX removal was 47%-81%in distilled water and 46%-79%in source water,whereas it was 0-28%for pH 6 in distilled water and 31%-52%in source *** 1.6μg/l or 20μg/l MC-lR was present with STX,STX removal was increased with PAC simultaneously removing 45%-65%of the 1.6μg/l MC-lR and 25%-95%of the 20μg/l MC-lR depending on the ***-a removal at pH 6 was 29%-37%for distilled water and 80%for source water,whereas it was 10%-26%for pH 8 in distilled water and 28%for pH 9 in source *** presence of cyanobacteria cells decreased ANTX-a removal by at least 18%.When 20μg/l MC-lR was present with ANTX-a in source water,59%-73%ANTX-a and 48%-77%of MClR was removed at pH 9 depending on the PAC *** general,a higher PAC dose led to higher cyanotoxin *** study also documented that multiple cyanotoxins can be effectively removed by PAC for water at pH’s between 6 and 9.

Extension of pilot tests of cyanide elimination by ozone from blast furnace gas washing water through Aspen Plus based model

For improving wastewater quality, one of the dare of steelworks is reducing cyanide in wastewater of gas washing treatment of blast furnaces. Costs of existing treatments, stringent environmental regulations and changeable composition of water from gas treatment, have led to study how available treatments can be modified and to examine new ones. Ozonation is one of cyanide treatments, tested within a European project. A process model was set up with Aspen Plus®, to assess operating conditions and wastewater distinctive characteristics and to demonstrate treatment robustness. Process was modeled by theoretical reactors, taking into account all more affecting reactions. A genetic algorithm was exploited to find kinetic parameters of these reactions. After validation, the model was used to analyse scenarios, by considering also real contexts. Pilot tests were extended, process knowledge was enhanced and suggestions were obtained. To promote cyanide removal with ozone, temperature and pH values were 30°C and 10, respectively. With an ozone (mg/h)/water (l/h) ratio of 100 mg/l, batch mode ensure reaching cyanide regulation limit (0.2 mg/l) after maximum 4.5 h, if initial amount was less than 20 mg/l. Higher removal was obtained than in continuous mode due to constraints related to this last run. Higher wastewater contamination needed further time and more ozone.
