POEMS syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic disorder due to an underlying clone of aberrant plasma *** name POEMS is an acronym for some of the major disease manifestations,namely polyneuropathy,organomegaly,endocrinopathy,presence of monoclonal component,and skin *** clinical presentation can be various and could lead to delayed diagnosis and *** is known about the pathogenic mechanism,although the neoangiogenesis due to overproduction of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)by plasma cells seems to play a key *** latest evidence suggests that the blood concentration of this cytokine correlates with the activity of the syndrome:VEGF could then be used as a therapeutic target and a marker to monitor *** case reports have shown the efficacy of this approach,but extended studies are required to better define the use of anti VEGF in patients affected by POEMS syndrome.

Breast cancer can infrequently metastasize to the upper gastrointestinal(GI)tract but the exact incidence is not well established-there is considerable variation between incidence reported from clinical studies and incidence noted in autopsy *** presentation can be very non-specific and often mimics primary gastrointestinal *** alone may not be sufficient to make a diagnosis and misdiagnosis is also common.A high degree of awareness and clinical suspicion is required to establish metastases to the upper GI *** undertook a comprehensive review of the available literature on breast cancer metastases to the esophagus and stomach including the clinical symptoms and presentation,endoscopic features,additional diagnostic imaging modalities,treatment and outcomes.

The liver is the most common site of metastases in patients with colorectal *** liver metastases(CRLMs)are the result of molecular mechanisms that involve different cells of the liver *** aberrant activation of Wingless/It(Wnt)/β-catenin signals downstream of Wnt ligands initially drives the oncogenic transformation of the colon epithelium,but also the progression of metastatization through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition/mesenchymalepithelial transition *** liver microenvironment,metastatic cells can also survive and adapt through dormancy,which makes them less susceptible to pro-apoptotic signals and *** of CRLMs is challenging due to its variability and *** in surgery and oncology have been made in the last decade and a pivotal role for Wnt/β-catenin pathway has been recognized in *** the state of art,there is a lack of clear understanding of why and how this occurs and thus where exactly the opportunities for developing anti-CRLMs therapies may *** this review,current knowledge on the involvement of Wnt signaling in the development of CRLMs was *** addition,an overview of useful biomarkers with a revision of surgical and non-surgical therapies currently accepted in the clinical practice for colorectal liver metastasis patients were provided.

Autophagy in eukaryotic cells is a constitutive process and functions as a homeostatic mechanism; it is up-regulated in response to specific stress stimuli such as starvation, hypoxia and as oxidative stress. In addition to playing a crucial role in adaptive responses to different stimuli, autophagy is also required for intracellular quality control. This second aspect is important to prevent the activation of pathological processes. Autophagy also plays a central role in cellular development and differentiation because it is involved in the regulation of energetic balance. This final aspect is critical for maintaining proper bone and muscle function as well as to prevent any pathological changes. Therefore, identifying new molecular targets involved in autophagy is critical to assure a good quality of life.

Aljustrel mines were classified as having high environmental hazard due to their large tailings volume and high metal concentrations in waters and *** assess acid mine drainage impacted systems whose environmental conditions change quickly,the use of biological indicators with short generation time such as diatoms is *** study combined geochemical and diatom data,whose results were highlighted in 3 groups：Group 1,with low p H（1.9–5.1）and high metal/metalloid（Al,As,Cd,Co,Cu,Fe,Mn,Ni,Pb,Zn;0.65–1032 mg/L）and SO4（405–39124 mg/L）*** acidophilic species,Pinnularia aljustrelica,was perfectly adapted to the adverse conditions;in contrast,teratological forms of Eunotia exigua were found,showing that metal toxicity affected this *** low availability of metals/metalloids in sediments of this group indicates that metals/metalloids of the exchangeable fractions had been solubilized,which in fact enables metal/metalloid diatom uptake and consequently the occurrence of teratologies;Group 2,with sites of near neutral p H（5.0–6.8）and intermediate metal/metalloid（0.002–6 mg/L）and SO4（302–2179 mg/L）concentrations;this enabled the existence of typical species of uncontaminated streams（Brachysira neglectissima,Achnanthidium minutissimum）;Group 3,with samples from unimpacted sites,showing low metal/metalloid（0–0.8 mg/L）and SO4（10–315 mg/L）concentrations,high pH（7.0–8.4）and Cl contents（10–2119 mg/L）and the presence of brackish to marine species（Entomoneis paludosa）.For similar conditions of acidity,differences in diversity,abundance and teratologies of diatoms can be explained by the levels of metals/metalloids.

This study investigates the development of novel montmorillonite/castor oil blends to formulate sustainable lubricating greases to promote the replacement of petrochemicals industry-derived materials by substances obtained from renewable ***,the effect of the thickener concentration on the rheological,chemical,thermal,tribological properties,and atomic force microscopy(AFM)microstructure of these systems were *** results showed that the C20A nanoclay content could be used to modulate the viscosity values,the linear viscoelastic functions,and tribological properties of these montmorillonite *** general,these gel-like dispersions exhibited remarkable lubricant properties;the samples showed values of the friction coefficient and wear scars similar or lower than those obtained with model bentonite grease.

Perovskites as host structures of cations were used in order to generate in situ active and stable catalysts for ethanol steam reforming. For this purpose,La_(1-x)Mg_xAl_(1-y)Ni_yO_3(x = 0.1; y = 0,0.1,0.2,0.3) perovskites were synthetized by the citrate *** segregation is evident for a substitution level higher than 0. 2. The segregation of Ni as NiO generated species interacts with different metal-support after the reduction step. The y = 0.1 catalyst presents the highest H_2 yield value about 85% during reaction time,with low mean values of CH_4 and CO selectivities of 3.4% and 11%,respectively and a low carbon formation. The better performance of y = 0.1 catalyst could be attributed to the minor proportion of segregated phases,thus a controlled expulsion of Ni is successfully reached.

This minireview summarizes our recent findings on the photoactivity of S-doped nanoporous carbons. The materials were either synthesized from the sulfur-containing polymers or obtained by heat treatment of commercial carbon with hydrogen sulfide. Their surface was extensively charac terized from the points of view of its surface chemistry, porosity, morphology, and electronic properties. The carbons showed enhanced activity towards oxidation of arsine and removal of diben-zothiophenes from model diesel fuel. The latter were oxidized to various oxygen containing intermediates and the cleavage of C–C bonds in aromatic ring was detected when carbon with adsorbed species was exposed to UV or visible light. Irradiation resulted in generation of photocurrent in a broad range of wavelength. The presence of sulfur led to the reduction of oxygen and contributed to an increased capacitive performance. We link these effects to the presence of reduced sulfur in the small pores which enhances the dispersive interactions via inducing a positive charge to carbon atoms, to sulfur in oxygenated forms which contribute to Faradaic reactions and increase the polar interactions, and to the hydrophobicity of a surface in small pores where oxygen can be reduced by excited electrons from chromophoric-like sulfur containing groups.

While the association between obesity,type 2 diabetes(T2D)and the presence of steatosis has been established since the beginning of the last century(1),it was not until 1980 that the first references were made about a form of histologic liver lesion designated as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).NASH is characterised by the presence of a variable degree of steatosis accompanied by lobular inflammatory infiltrate and hepatocellular damage with or without ***,the broader term of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)was accepted,which more accurately encompass the entire spectrum of lesions that appear in these patients(2).Ever since then,NAFLD has become progressively the primary cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries(3).
