The often-used phrase ‘the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau’ implies a flat-surfaced Tibet rose as a coherent entity, and that uplift was driven entirely by the collision and northward movement of India. Here, we argue that these are misconceptions derived in large part from simplistic geodynamic and climate modeling, as well as proxy misinterpretation. The growth of Tibet was a complex process involving mostly Mesozoic collisions of several Gondwanan terranes with Asia, thickening the crust and generating complex relief before the arrival of India. In this review, earth system modeling, paleoaltimetry proxies and fossil finds contribute to a new synthetic view of the topographic evolution of Tibet. A notable feature overlooked in previous models of plateau formation was the persistence through much of the Cenozoic of a wide east–west orientated deep central valley, and the formation of a plateau occurred only in the late Neogene through compression and internal sedimentation.

Metrics for macroscale invasion and dispersal patterns

Aim The ability to quantitatively measure the continuum of macroscale patterns of species invasion is a first step toward deeper understand-ing of their causal *** took advantage of two centuries worth of herbarium data,to evaluate a set of metrics to measure macroscale patterns,allowing cross-species comparisons of inva-sive expansion across large geographic *** We used herbarium specimens to reconstruct county-level invasion histories for two non-native plants(Alliaria petiolata and Lonicera japonica),with distinct spatiotemporal distribution patterns over the past two *** county centroids from species’ini-tial occurrences,we quantified point pattern metrics from multiple disciplines(*** crime analysis,landscape ecology etc.)that are historically used at smaller spatial scales,to evaluate their abil-ity to detect macroscale spatial diffusion and amount of directional *** were further assessed for their ease of use,data requirements,independence from other metrics and intuitiveness of *** Findings We identified four suitable metrics for distinguishing differences in spatial patterns:(i)standard distance,(ii)number of patches,(iii)euclidean nearest neighbor summary class statistic coefficient of variation and(iv)mean center that when applied to county-level presence data allowed us to determine the directions by which distributions expanded and if distributions increased via outward expansion,infilling and/or jump dispersal *** metrics when compared during the same invasion phase are capable of quantifying macroscale variability among species in their distri-butional and dispersal *** able to quantify differences among species in these patterns is important in understanding the drivers of species dispersal *** metrics therefore repre-sent a simple yet thorough toolset for achieving this goal.

Differential regulation of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and liver of neonatal pigs by leucine through an mTORC1-dependent pathway

Neonatal growth is characterized by a high protein synthesis rate that is largely due to an enhanced sensitivity to the postprandial rise in insulin and amino acids, especially leucine. The mechanism of leucine＇s action in vivo is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the effect of leucine infusion on protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and liver of neonatal pigs. To evaluate the mode of action of leucine, we used rapamycin, an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin （mTOR） complex-1 （mTORC1）. Overnight-fasted 7-day-old piglets were treated with rapamycin for 1 hour and then infused with leucine （400 μmol·kg^-1·h^-1） for 1 hour. Leucine infusion increased the rate of protein synthesis, and ribosomal protein s6 kinase 1 （s6K1） and eukaryotic initiation factor （elF） 4e-binding protein-1 （4e-BP1） phosphorylation in gastrocnemius and masseter muscles （P 〈 0.05）, but not in the liver. The leucine-induced stimulation of protein synthesis and s6K1 and 4e-BP1 phosphorylation were completely blocked by rapamycin, suggesting that leucine action is by an mTORC1-dependent mechanism. Neither leucine nor rapamycin had any effect on the activation of the upstream mTQRC1 regulators, AMP-activated protein kinase and protein kinase B, in skeletal muscle or liver. The activation of elF2α and elongation factor 2 was not affected by leucine or rapamycin, indicating that these two pathways are not limiting steps of leucine-induced protein synthesis. These results suggest that leucine stimulates muscle protein synthesis in neonatal pigs by inducing the activation of mTORC1 and its downstream pathway leading to mRNA translation.

BACKGROUND The gold standard treatment for papillary thyroid carcinoma is total thyroidectomy and indications for microwave thermal ablation for primary thyroid cancers have not yet been clearly established However,some patients refuse surgery and others have no indication for it,for example patients under palliative care as in this case,or cannot undergo surgery,based on their *** indications are described in the most recent Korean,North American and european *** ablation,radiofrequency ablation,and microwave ablation are similarly safe and effective,so the choice should be based on the specific competences and resources of the pertaining *** indications are Percutaneous minimally-invasive techniques;they can be useful to stop disease progression and as an alternative to surgery in patients with contraindication or who refuse *** present a case of a thyroid papillary carcinoma with 17 mm effectively treated with microwave thermal ablation and without recurrence after one year of follow *** sUMMARY The authors present a case of a 71-years-old patient with a left lobe papillary thyroid carcinoma with 13 mm×17 mm×13 mm,with no indication for thyroid surgery given the context of another cancer in palliative *** thermoablation was performed on December *** months later he repeated computed tomography(CT)scan,which showed that the tumor had *** months after ablation he underwent a positron emission tomography/CT-fluorodeoxyglucose scan,which didn’t show any evidence of hypermetabolic tumor *** This case shows microwave thermoablation can be a safe and effective alternative to surgery in patients with no conditions to undergo surgery or when they refuse *** treating the tumor,with this minimally invasive technique,we are stopping its growth and avoiding disease progression.

effect of sn precursor on the synthesis of snO2 and sb-doped snO2 particles via polymeric precursor method

snO2 and sb-doped snO2 particles were synthesized using the polymeric precursor method with different sn salt precursors： snCl2.2H2O, snCl4.5H20, or sn citrate. sb2O3 was used as the precursor of sb, and the molar ratio of nsn：nsb was held constant. FTIR and TGA/DTA were used to examine the influence of the sn precursor on the formation and thermal decomposition of the sn and sn-sb complexes. The calcination products obtained from heating the sn and sn-sb complexes at 500℃ in air were analyzed using XRD and TeM analysis. The results revealed that the snO2 and sb-doped snO2 formation temperatures depended on the nature of the sn precursor. The calcination products were found to be snO2 and sb-doped snO2 particles, which crystallized in a tetragonal cassiterite structure with a highly preferred （110） planar orientation. The sn precursor and the presence of sb in the snO2 matrix strongly influenced the crystallinity and lattice parameters.
