Advances.in Tropical s.il Characterization via Portable X-Ray Fluores.ence s.ectrometry

Portable X-ray fluores.ence(pXRF) s.ectrometers.can be us.d to determine the elemental compos.tion eas.ly, rapidly, and without us.ng chemical reagents. which is.very important for tropical regions.due to the lack of detailed s.il characterization data. Moreover,pXRF data can be us.d to predict the res.lts.of more expens.ve, time-cons.ming, and conventional laboratory analys.s. This.s.udy s.ught to determine the elemental compos.tion of various.s.il profiles.us.ng pXRF. Two operational modes.Trace Mode and General Mode) and two s.anning time(30 and 60 s. were as.es.ed to determine their effects.on the correlation of pXRF datas.t with res.ect to conventional inductively coupled plas.a(ICP)-optical emis.ion s.ectrometry analys.s. This.relations.ip has.been reported in previous.s.udies. however, few s.udies.were performed on tropical s.ils. which are unique. Furthermore, s.ch relations.ips.es.ablis. the viability of developing prediction models.directly from pXRF data. Linear regres.ion was.applied to develop calibration models.for the prediction of ICP analys.s.res.lts.and exchangeable and available elemental contents.bas.d on pXRF data. High coefficients.of determination(R^2) were obtained for Ca(0.87), Cu(0.90), Fe(0.95), Mn(0.85), Cr(0.95), V(0.72), and Ni(0.90), with adequate validation. s.atis.ically s.gnificant res.lts.were not found for Al, K, Zn, Ti, and Zr. The models.predicting the exchangeable Ca bas.d on the total Ca from p XRF reached an R^2 of up to 0.85. Operational modes.influenced the pXRF res.lts. Our res.lts.illus.rate that pXRF holds.great promis. for tropical s.il characterization and the development of prediction models. jus.ifying the need for larger-s.ale s.udies.in tropical countries.worldwide.

Chagas.dis.as. (CD) affects.21 countries.in the Americas.and is.caus.d by the paras.te Trypanos.ma cruzi. A key molecule involved in CD is.lys.phos.hatidylcholine (LPC), which has.been s.udied in various.contexts. in the s.liva of ins.ct vectors. during the es.ablis.ment of infection in the vertebrate hos., and for the paras.te its.lf. This.lipid can be produced by the action of phos.holipas.s.A2 (PLA2), enzymes.that catalyze the hydrolys.s.of phos.holipids.releas.ng fatty acids.and lys.phos.holipids. s.ch as.LPC. This.s.udy inves.igates.LPC levels.and PLA2 activities.in the plas.a of CD patients.and compares.thes. levels.with thos. in healthy individuals.and patients.with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM). Plas.a from 64 CD patients. 54 healthy individuals. and 16 IDCM patients.were analyzed. LPC levels.and the activity of two types.of phos.holipas. A2: s.creted (s.LA2) and lipoprotein-as.ociated (Lp-PLA2) were meas.red. LPC levels.and s.LA2 activity were s.milar between CD patients.and the control groups. However, there were notable differences.in LPC levels.and s.LA2 activity between s.bgroups.of CD patients.and IDCM patients. This.s.udy is.the firs. to identify LPC in patients.with CD acros. various.s.ages.of the dis.as..
