Effect of organic acids—essential oils blend and oat fiber combination on broiler chicken growth performance, blood parameters, and intestinal health

This study evaluated the effect of organic acids-essential oils blend with or without oat hulls(OH)on growth performance,organ weights,blood parameters,gut morphology,microbiota,and short-chain fatty acids(SC FA)in ***-old broiler chickens were randomly allocated to 4 dieta ry treatments consisting of 1)a corn-soybean meal-wheat based diet(BAS),2)BAS+0.05%bacitracin methylene disalicylate(BMD),3)BAS+protected organic acids-essential oils at 300 g/1,000 kg of feed(OE),and 4)BAS+protected organic acids-essential oils at 300 g/1,000 kg of feed+3%OH(OEOH),in 8 replicate *** was in starter(d0 to 14),grower(d 14 to 24),and finisher(d 24 to 36)*** weight(BW),feed intake(FI),feed conversion ratio(FCR),and mortality were determined *** d 36,8 chickens per treatment were sampled for blood biochemistry,organ weights,cecal SCFA production,and *** had no effect on FI and FCR at all *** OE and OEOH treatments reduced(P<0.001)the body weight gain of birds at the starter *** fed the OEOH treatment had higher(P<0.001)gizzard weight,while those offered the BMD diet showed a tendency(P=0.08)to have higher cecal *** in the OEOH treatment recorded increased ileal villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio,as well as reduced duodenal crypt depth,while birds in the OE treatment had increased j ej unal villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth *** OEOH and OE treatments increased the number of goblet cells produced in the duodenum and *** had no effecton SCFA *** in the OE treatment recorded the lowest concentration of blood urea(P=0.05)and cholesterol(P<0.05).Both OE and OEOH treatments increased(P<0.05)the relative abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria in the genus Firmicutesunclassified,Ruminococcus,Turicibacter,and Erysipelotrichaceaeunclassified,while reducing(P<0.001)the relative abundance of potentially harmful ***,bo

Colorectal cancer is a lethal disease if not discovered *** though appropriate screening and preventive strategies are in place in many countries,a significant number of patients are still diagnosed at late stages of the *** management of metastatic colorectal cancer remains a significant clinical challenge to oncologists *** cytotoxic regimens constitute the main treatment of choice in this patient population,addition of the five biologics(bevacizumab,cetuximab,aflibercept,panitumumab and regorafenib)to these regimens has improved clinical *** most commonly used cytotoxic regimens include doublet combinations(FOLFOX/XELOX or FOLFIRI).Many clinical trials have been published and others are underway to compare the biologic agents with one another in order to prove the superiority of one regimen over *** colorectal cancer patients have many treatment options;however,the optimal use and sequence of targeted agents remain to be *** review entails concise and updated clinical data on the management of metastatic colorectal *** aim of the review is to determine where to fit the five biologic targets into the treatment algorithm of metastatic colorectal cancer patients and to derive treatment sequences that would achieve best clinical outcome based on the current available data.

Higher education has been in a financially precarious position for many years –facing either a total transformation or elimination. Tuition increases and fewercollege-age students from shifting demographics are primary reasons for thefinancial distress. Alternative financial stability models have assumed linearvariable relationships and improperly calculate the probability of *** have historically relied upon models such as those developed byEdmit and the Department of Education which are inadequate at separatingfinancially sound from unsound universities. We used an Automated MachineLearning approach utilizing multiple models to explain the relationship betweenmetrics and the probability of default/closure allowing for more informedmanagerial decisions. This research, although applied to the homogeneousgroup of small liberal arts universities, can be applied to online and stateuniversities and will allow the opportunity to take preventive steps to mitigatethe likelihood of closing due to financial distress.

Nitrate in shallow groundwater in typical agricultural and forest ecosystems in China,2004-2010

The nitrate-nitrogen（NO 3-N） concentrations from shallow groundwater wells situated in 29 of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network field stations,representing typical agroand forest ecosystems,were assessed using monitoring data collected between 2004 and *** from this assessment permit a national scale assessment of nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater,and allow linkages between nitrate concentrations in groundwater and broad land use categories to be *** indicated that most of the NO 3--N concentrations in groundwater from the agroand forest ecosystems were below the Class 3 drinking water standard stated in the Chinese National Standard：Quality Standard for Ground Water（≤ 20 mg/L）.Over the study period,the average NO 3--N concentrations were significantly higher in agro-ecosystems（4.1 ± 0.33 mg/L） than in forest ecosystems（0.5 ± 0.04 mg/L）.NO 3-N concentrations were relatively higher（〉 10 mg N /L） in 10 of the 43 wells sampled in the agricultural *** elevated concentrations occurred mainly in the Ansai,Yucheng,Linze,Fukang,Akesu,and Cele field sites,which were located in arid and semiarid areas where irrigation rates are *** suggest that improvements in N fertilizer application and irrigation management practices in the arid and semi-arid agricultural ecosystems of China are the key to managing groundwater nitrate concentrations.

Reducing neonatal mortality and respiratory distress syndrome associated with preterm birth:a scoping review on the impact of antenatal corticosteroids in low-and middle-income countries

Background The most common cause of death among preterm infants in low-and middle-income countries is respiratory distress *** purpose of this review was to assess whether antenatal corticosteroids given to women at risk of preterm birth at≤34 weeks of gestation reduce rates of neonatal mortality and respiratory distress syndrome in low-and middle-income *** Two reviewers independently searched four databases including MEDLINE(through PubMed),CINAHL,Embase,and Cochrane *** did not apply any language or date *** publications up to April 2020 were included in this *** The search yielded 71 articles,10 of which were included in this review(3 randomized controlled trials,7 observa-tional studies,36,773 neonates).The majority of studies reported associations between exposure to antenatal corticosteroids and lower rates of neonatal mortality and respiratory distress ***,a few studies reported that antenatal corticosteroids were not associated with improved preterm birth *** Most of the studies in low-and middle-income countries showed that use of antenatal corticosteroids in hospitals with high levels of neonatal care was associated with lower rates of neonatal mortality and respiratory distress ***,the findings are inconclusive because some studies in low-resource settings reported that antenatal corticosteroids had no benefit in reducing rates of neonatal mortality or respiratory distress *** research on the impact of antenatal corticosteroids in resource-limited settings in low-income countries is a priority.

Art and Activism in the Ruins： Guerrilla Urbanism and the Nangang Bottle Cap Factory

The controversy over the partial demolishment of the Nangang Bottle Cap Factory for redevelopment is a prime example of the ongoing public debate about urban renewal in Taipei. The controversy crystalizes the tension between a growing public desire for historical preservation in Taipei to safeguard shared history and restore collective memory, and profit-driven capitalistic development. The transformation of the factory over the past decade--from disused public property to a city-operated Urban Regeneration Station for fostering art and innovation, and finally to a demolition site that is being readied for new construction--illustrates the tug of war between the exigencies of cultural/historical preservation and urban renewal in Taipei. During the process, not only did citizen activists play a maior role in raising the public＇s awareness of the unique value of the Nangang Bottle Cap Factory as one of the last major relics of Taipei＇s industrial heritage, graffiti artists also created works in the abandoned factory that dialogued about its contested future under a neoliberal capitalist regime. By tracing the origins of the controversy, I argue, through a photo documentation of the accumulated graffiti inside the factory before demolition began, that the factory ＂ruin＂ has functioned as a theater for diverse forms of guerrilla urbanism, including engaged art, urban exploration, and community organization.
