In this study,the physicochemical properties of linseed and linseed biofuel were studied and their effect on the flow properties of Nigerian waxy crude oil at different volume fractions was *** Nigerian wax crude oil was characterized for its specific gravity,API gravity,wax content,pour point and cloud *** properties of the linseed oil and linseed biodiesel investigated include:density,specific gravity,viscosity,pour point,cloud point and flash *** esterification of the free fatty acid(FFA)contained in the linseed oil reduced from 3.5 to 0.75 and the viscosity of the seed oil reduces from 2169 to 362 mm^(2)/*** linseed oil and its biodiesel exhibited similar trend of reduced viscosity at higher shear rate,however,linseed biodiesel demonstrated the lowest viscosities,cloud points and pour points owing to reduced fatty *** effect of the linseed oil and its biodiesel on the pour point and cloud point of the waxy crude oil was determined;and the performance compared to that of xylene.A rapid drop in the pour point and cloud point was observed with the wax crude pre-heated with 0.1 v/v linseed oil,its biodiesel and xylene.

This study focuses on predicting acoustic and mechanical rock properties using random forest and feed forward neural network models to evaluate the likelihood of developing efficient ways of handling absence of rock properties at offset *** Random Forest algorithm was used for direct prediction of the sonic data without considering the depth range of the facies;while Feed forward Neural network was used to predict the sonic data with emphasis on the lithofacies *** accuracy of these approaches was used in choosing the best and the most robust model for predicting sonic data when estimating formation strength and mechnical *** log was predicted after training a combination of caliper log,gamma log,depth,density log and resistivity log from offset wells.5 hidden layers that accounts for the data structural complexities was included in the model architecture.A multilayer perceptron network was adopted for the Random forest algorithm to handle linear combinations of input data *** error computations were used to evaluate the performance of the ***,mechanical properties and sanding potential was evaluated using standard relations and appropriate depositional *** forest algorithm gave the best prediction accuracy of more than 96%,but the Feed forward network has the lower mean absolute error and mean squared error of 2.75 and 5.93 ***,the predicted compressive and shear wave velocity show increase of values with depth,a behavior that is capable of identifying payzone *** was validated by the distinction seen within the 200 feet gas sand formation in the deeper portion of the studied well(9600e9800 feet).Potential failure portions of the wells,a common feature in the field,were inferred from the sanding potential computed using the predicted mechanical properties value.

Many irrigation projects,especially in the developing tropical regions,are embarked upon without any land capability assessment,resulting in avoidable and undesirable ecological *** aim of this study is to assess the irrigation capability potentials of the soils of a rice growing Illushi/Ega community in Edo State of *** of Illushi/Ega(200 ha)were studied to establish their irrigation *** samples were collected from the rivers within and near the sites at the proposed points of intake structures and analyzed for salinity(ECw),permeability(SAR)and ion toxicity[Chlorine(Cl)and Boron(B)].Gravity irrigation suitability assessment was carried out following the guidelines of the United States Bureau for Land Reclamation(USBR,1953)and FAO(1979).Results showed that about 5.5%of the land was non-irrigable,11.5%was marginally irrigable,30.5%was moderately irrigable and 52.5%highly *** about 83%of the total land area was found to be *** results of analyses of irrigation water[ECw,SAR and Cl and B(ion toxicity)problems in water sources were 0.1-0.7 dS m^(-1),1.2-1.7,0.6-1.8 cmol kg^(-1) and 0.5-0.7 mg kg^(-1)]also show that there is no indication of salinity or ion toxicity problem.

Background:Lassa fever is a zoonotic viral infection endemic to the West Africa *** is highly fatal during pregnancy and as such reports of neonatal onset Lassa fever infections are rare in scientific *** report a fatal case of Lassa fever in a 26-day-old neonate mimicking the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal *** presentation:The patient is a 26-day-old neonate who was admitted with a day history of fever,poor feeding,pre-auricular lymphadenopathy and sudden parental *** was initially evaluated for late onset neonatal *** later developed abnormal bleeding and multiple convulsions while on admission,prompting the need to evaluate for Lassa fever using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).He died 31 h into admission and RT-PCR result was positive for Lassa ***:Neonatal Lassa fever infection is highly fatal and can mimic neonatal *** index of suspicion is needed particularly for atypical presentations of neonatal sepsis in Lassa fever endemic areas.

The contamination of the environment by organic pollutants is a major risk factor,particularly for developing *** organic pollutants(SOPs)like the phenolic compounds,polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),pesticides,and herbicides pose serious environmental and health issues owing to their toxic characteristics and poor *** from their potential mutagenicity,carcinogenicity,tetragenicity and high body accumulation,these pollutants have become an increase concern *** is a promising alternative strategy for removing organic pollutants during water purification *** have several advantages such as simplicity of operation,good sorption capacity,high recoverability and *** a result,the focus and novelty of this review is on recent trends in the use of biosorbents,with a particular emphasis on the removal of SOPs from *** also cover use of bacteria biosorbents,fungal,algae and chitosan/chitin *** from that,we have also reviewed various classes of SOPs,their levels in the environment,classification and available characteristics techniques suitable for the adsorption experiments of these nanocomposites *** addition,we have provided comprehensive explanations and conclusions on possible future application of biosorbents and the mechanism of adsorption of these materials for removal of these SOPs from wastewater during water purification processes.

This study investigated the effect of crude oil-contaminated soil on the germination and growth performance of Abelmoschus esculentus, a widely cultivated vegetable crop in Nigeria. The experiment was conducted in the Screen House, under controlled environmental conditions. The seedling emergence percentage, heights and girths were studied to determine the growth performance of the crop in crude oil-contaminated soil. The result of the investigation revealed that the crude oil-contaminated soil affects the growth performance of Abelmoschus esculentus L. as hindered germination, reduced heights and girths were observed in the crop planted in treated soil and this adversely and severely affects the crop agronomic growth and development and probably its yield. Therefore, contamination of agricultural soils with crude oil should be avoided and public awareness should be created on the detrimental effects of crude oil pollution in our terrestrial ecosystem. Innovative and environmental-friendly remediation strategies should be carried out on our agricultural soils that have been grossly polluted by crude oil exploitation and exploration.

Pentazocine Abuse in Two Siblings with Sickle Cell Anaemia

Vaso-occlusive crisis is a common clinical manifestation in children with sickle cell anaemia, frequently warranting in-patient management with intravenous fluids, analgesics and occasionally anti-malaria and antibiotics. Pain is the principal symptom of vaso-occlusive crisis and it can affect any part of the body. Pentazocine is a well-known opioid analgesic, commonly used in the treatment of painful crisis in children affected by sickle cell anaemia. It was discovered in the 1950s and was initially thought to be addiction—proof, but this has been disproved over the years by reports of pentazocine dependence/addiction especially in patients living with chronic pain. There have been some case reports of pentazocine abuse/dependence among sickle cell disease patients in the literature, most of which are from Nigeria but none involved joint addiction by siblings. We therefore, report the case of two siblings, known sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) patients, referred to our emergency paediatric unit with history of recurrent painful crisis over a 10-month period leading to abuse of pentazocine. They were jointly managed successfully by the paediatric hematology and the pain and palliative units of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and helped to overcome their abuse and addiction.

Evaluation of Quality of Some Rehabilitated Mined Soils within the AngloGold-Ashanti Concession in Ghana

Land degradation caused by surface mining of gold has been extensive in Ghana. In recent years rehabilitation of some degraded lands by re-vegetation has been undertaken. This study provides quantitative data on the quality of some rehabilitated and un-rehabilitated mined soils within the AngloGold-Ashanti gold concession in parts of the semi-deciduous forest zone of Ghana. Soil properties determined included texture, bulk density and aggregate stability, pH, organic carbon, available phosphorus, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases, exchange acidity, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb. Aggregate stability as a physical quality indicator revealed that aggregates of the rehabilitated mined soil had become more stable and similar to the control unmined soil due to litter and carbon additions from planted trees. The nutrient levels were very low because of the presence of low activity clays inherent in the native soil. Organic carbon content in the rehabilitated soil had increased above that of the unrehabilitated soil. Variability in soil properties, especially organic carbon and aggregate stability, was minimal in the unmined and rehabilitated soils implying that soils at the two sites were most robust and resistant to crushing and rupture. Quality index of the unmined control soil was 36.5% indicating that the quality of the soil was 63.5% relative to the optimum quality because of inherent poor soil properties. The mined rehabilitated and unrehabilitated soil had index values of 32.5% and 24.4 %, respectively. The marginal difference of 4% in soil quality between the control and rehabilitated soil shows that it is possible to maintain the health of soils with inherent physical and biochemical deficiencies if reclamation regulations are adhered to. In this way, the socio-economic dilemma of exploiting natural resources for the benefit of societies is ameliorated while maintaining an ecosystem balance.
