Phytochemical screening and antibacterial activities of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina extracts on some selected enteric isolates

Background:This research focuses on herbal medicine,an ancient healthcare practice,exploring the antibacterial attributes of fresh and dried leaf extracts from Momordica charantia(commonly known as Bitter melon)and Vernonia amygdalina(Bitter leaf).The study specifically investigates their effects on different bacterial strains associated with ***:Four enteric bacterial isolates-Klebsiella pneumoniae,Salmonella typhi,Escherichia coli,and Proteus mirabilis-were obtained from the Medical Laboratory Unit at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilishan-Remo,Ogun *** screening and antibacterial testing were conducted using standard biochemical techniques and the Punch-hole agar diffusion method,***:Qualitative phytochemical screening of the plant extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids,glycosides,and saponin in both plants,excluding *** were identified only in Vernonia *** these phytochemicals,neither plant displayed inhibitory effects on the tested bacterial isolates(Escherichia coli,Proteus mirabilis,Klebsiella pneumoniae,and Salmonella typhi)when tested individually or in ***,combining the fresh and dried leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina with a standard drug resulted in smaller mean zone diameters of inhibition(Escherichia coli range:14 mm–16 mm,Proteus mirabilis range:31 mm–35 mm,Klebsiella pneumoniae range:13 mm–22 mm,and Salmonella typhi range:35 mm–38 mm)compared to the drug tested alone(16 mm–45 mm).Conclusion:Despite previous indications of antibacterial properties in various extracts of *** and *** leaves,our study presents contradictory results,prompting the need for further investigation despite the presence of significant phytochemicals.

Overexpression of fibrinogen-like protein 2 protects against T cell-induced colitis

AIMTo determine the effect of overexpression of fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2) on regulatory T cell (Treg) and effector T (Teff) cell function on T cell-induced colitis in Rag1-/- *** and Teff cells from fgl2-/-, fgl2+/+, and fgl2Tg mice were purified by FACS. They were studied in vitro for immunosuppressive activity and cell proliferation and in vivo for their effects on the development and prevention of T cell-induced colitis in Rag1-/- *** vitro, fgl2Tg Treg had enhanced immunosuppressive activity, and fgl2Tg Teff had reduced proliferation to alloantigen stimulation. Transfer of Teff from C57Bl/6J mice (fgl2+/+) into Rag1-/- mice produced both clinical and histologic colitis with dense infiltrates of CD3+ T cells, crypt abscesses and loss of goblet cells. Fgl2Tg Treg prevented the development of T cell-induced colitis, whereas fgl2+/+ and fgl2-/- Treg were only partially protective. In mice that received fgl2Tg Treg, the ratio of Foxp3+ to CD3+ cells was increased both in the colon and in mesenteric lymph nodes, and Teff cell proliferation as determined by staining with Ki67 was reduced. Teff cells from fgl2Tg mice did not produce *** we show that fgl2Tg Teff are hypoproliferative and do not induce colitis. We further demonstrate that fgl2Tg Treg prevent colitis in contrast to fgl2+/+ Treg, which were only partially protective. These studies collectively provide a rationale for exploring the use of FGL2 or Treg expressing high levels of FGL2 in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Numerical Simulation of Varied Buffer Layer of Solar Cells Based on Cigs

Numerical simulation has been used to investigate the effect of different buffer?layer components on the performance of CuInGaSe2?solar cells?with SCAPS-1D?software. The main photovoltaic parameters of simulated devices: open-circuit?voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Jsc), fill factor (FF), and conversion efficiency (h),?areanalysed as a function of thickness and temperature in the different buffer layers used. According to numerical simulation the highest conversion?efficiency (23%) of CIGS solar cell is reached for the CdS buffer layer. This?result is validated by experimental results?(20%). At 300 K, when the thickness?of?the buffer layer (CdS, ZnS, ZnSe,?InSe2) increases from 100 nm to 500?nm,?with the other parameters maintained constant, the efficiency decreases. When the temperature increases from 300 K to 400 K,?with the other parameters maintained?constant, both open circuit voltage and conversion efficiency also decrease.?The?effect of dual buffer layers of ZnS/CdS has also been analysed and his efficiency increases?of 3% than a single buffer CdS.

Genetic algorithm-determined deep feedforward neural network architecture for predicting electricity consumption in real buildings

A genetic algorithm-determined deep feedforward neural network architecture(GA-DFNN)is proposed for both day-ahead hourly and week-ahead daily electricity consumption of a real-world campus building in the United *** to the comprehensive relationship between affecting factors and real-world building electricity consumption,the adoption of multiple hidden layers in the deep neural network(DFNN)algorithm would improve its prediction *** architecture of a DFNN model mainly refers to its quantity of hidden layers,quantity of neurons in the hidden layers,activation function in each layer and learning process to obtain the connecting *** optimal architecture of DFNN model was generally determined through a trial-and-error process,which is an exponential combinatorial problem and a tedious *** address this problem,genetic algorithm(GA)is adopted to automatically design an optimal architecture with improved generalization *** year and six months of measurement data from a campus building is used for training and testing the proposed GA-DFNN model,*** demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed GA-DFNN prediction model,its prediction performance,including mean absolute percentage error,coefficient of determination,root mean square error and mean absolute error,was compared to the reference feedforward neural network models with single hidden layer,DFNN models with other architecture,random search determined DFNN model,long-short-term-memory model and temporal convolutional network *** comparison results show that the proposed GA-DFNN predictive model has superior performance than all the reference prediction models,demonstrating the optimization effectiveness of GA and the prediction effectiveness of DFNN model with multiple hidden layers and optimal architecture.

Numerical Analysis of Thermo-Elastic Contact Problem of Disc Brakes for Vehicle on Gradient Surfaces

In this study, the thermo-elastic effects of frictional heat generation in a disc brake system due to braking actions were simulated. The mathematical model that defined the problem was developed from the kinetic and potential energies of moving vehicles on the gradient surfaces. This problem was solved for the selected geometry of disc brake and pad with their material properties selected from existing literatures using the finite element method and the computational results were obtained. The thermal deformation obtained was in good agreement with similar literature results. Also, for the same braking period and conditions, the results showed that a vehicle ascending a hill gave a higher temperature rise, Von Mises stress and thermal deformation on brake contact surfaces than when descending hill. Therefore, the braking period required to bring a moving vehicle in ascendent motion to a lower speed is expected to be shorter because of the gravity effect than horizontal motion, while descendent motion requires longer braking period.

Facile Synthesis of Bis-Trifluoromethyl 1,8-Dioxo-Octahydroxanthene Derivatives

Xanthene and Xanthenediones are structural components of several bioactive and semi-synthetic molecules. This work described an expeditious synthesis of novel and hitherto unreported bis-trifluoromethyl xanthene dione derivatives. The reaction of two equivalents of 5-trifluoromethyl cyclohexane-1,3- dione with substituted aromatic aldehydes in the presence of ethanol containing 1 - 2 drops of HCl was facile under microwave irradiation. Short reaction time (25 min), good to excellent yields (80% - 95%), good atom economy, and simple workup are the major advantages of the above procedure. Moreover, the fluorinated products represent synthetically useful stable intermediates that could find applications in pharmaceutical, agricultural and material industries.

High-performance multilayer WSe2 field-effect transistors with carrier type control

In this stud high-performance multilayer WSe2 field-effect transistor （FET） devices with carrier type control are demonstrated via thickness modulation and a remote oxygen plasma surface treatment. Carrier type control in multilayer WSe2 FET devices with Cr/Au contacts is initially demonstrated by modulating the WSe2 thickness. The carrier type evolves with increasing WSe2 channel thickness, being p-type, ambipolar, and n-type at thicknesses 〈 3, - 4, and 〉 5 nm, respectively. The thickness-dependent carrier type is attributed to changes in the bandgap of WSe2 as a function of the thickness and the carrier band offsets relative to the metal contacts. Furthermore, we present a strong hole carrier doping effect via remote oxygen plasma treatment. It non-degenerately converts n-type characteristics into p-type and enhances field-effect hole mobility by three orders of magnitude. This work demonstrates progress towards the realization of high-performance multilayer WSe2 FETs with carrier type control, potentially extendable to other transition metal dichalcogenides, for future electronic and oDtoelectronic alpplications.

Comparative Study of Lead-Free Perovskite Solar Cells Using Different Hole Transporter Materials

In recent years, there has been an unprecedented rise in the performance of metal halide perovskite solar cells. The lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn much research interest due to the Pb toxicity of the lead halide perovskite. CH3NH3SnI3 is a viable alternative to CH3NH3PbX3. In this work,?we designed a tin-based perovskite simulated model with the novel architecture of (TCO)/buffer (TiO2)/absorber (Perovskite)/hole transport material (HTM) and analyzed using the solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS-1D), which is well adapted to study the photovoltaic architectures. In the paper, we studied the influences of perovskite thickness and the doping concentration on the solar cell performance through theoretical analysis and device simulation. The results are indicating that the lead-free CH3NH3SnI3 is having the greatpotential to be an absorber layer with suitable inorganic hole transport materials?like CuI (PCE: 23.25%), Cu2O (PCE: 19.17%), organic hole transport materials?like spiro-OMETAD (PCE: 23.76%) and PTAA (PCE: 23.74%) to achieve high?efficiency. This simulation model will become a good guide for the fabrication?of high efficiency tin-based perovskite solar. The results show that the lead-free CH3NH3SnI3 is a potential environmentally friendly solar cells with high efficiency.

Caesarian Section for Placenta Praevia: Does Booking Status Affect Maternofetal Outcome?

Background: Placenta praevia accounts for significant maternal morbidity and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in blood transfusion technique and surgical procedure, abnormal placentation still remains a difficult challenge for obstetricians. Objective: To determine the influence of booking status on the fetal and maternal outcome among parturients with placenta praevia that underwent caesarian delivery. Methodology: This was a comparative and retrospective study between booked and unbooked subjects with significant placenta praevia that were delivered by caesarian section between January 1st 2004 and December 31st 2008 with respect to maternal and fetal outcome. Result: Out of 14,344 deliveries during study period, 123 cases of placenta praevia that underwent caesarian delivery were identified giving a prevalence rate of 0.86%. 49 subjects were booked while 74 were unbooked. There was no statistically significant difference between booked and unbooked cases with respect to risk factors (30.6% of booked and 23% of unbooked), X2(4) = 7.203, P = 0.126 and the mean blood loss at surgery (870.4 ± 486.9 ml in booked versus 779.7 ± 380.96 ml in unbooked), X2(1) = 0.202, P = 0.653. However, antepartum transfusion (12.2% booked versus 34.7% unbooked) and postpartum transfusion (51% booked versus 72% unbooked) showed statistically significant difference, X2(1) = 9.744, P = 0.002. One maternal death occurred amongst the unbooked cases and none among the booked cases. Statistically significant differences were also noted in the apgar score at 1 minute X2(3) = 15.528, P = 0.001 and 5 minutes X2(3) = 12.912, P = 0.005 respectively. More babies died in the unbooked group (19) compared to two (2) in the booked mothers.
