Functionalization of AuMSS nanorods towards more effective cancer therapies

The applicatio n of nano particles as selective drug delivery platforms arises as one the most promising therapeutic strategies in the biomedical field. Such systems can encapsulate drugs, prevent its premature degradation, transport and promote the drugs specific delivery to the target site. Among the different nanostructures, gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods have been one of the most explored due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The mesoporous silica biocompatibility, high surface area that can be easily functionalized, tubular pores that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic capacity of gold nanorod to absorb near-infrared radiation, allows the combination of hyperthermia (i.e., photothermal effect) with drug delivery, making them a nanoplatforms with a huge potential for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the successful applicati on of AuMSS nanoparticles as an effective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of the therapeutic payloads, limited blood circulation time and unfavorable pharmacokinetics. In this review, an overview of the modificati ons performed to improve the AuMSS nano rods applicati on in nanom edicine is provided, highlighting the practical approaches that enhaneed the AuMSS nanorods targeting, responsiveness to different stimuli, and blood circulation time. Further, the basics of AuMSS nano rods syn thesis procedures, gen eral properties, and its applicati on in can cer therapy are also described.

The optimal ventilation method for patients suffering from cardiac arrest and receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)remains unclear,and the recent guidelines do not provide detailed information.[1-3]During CPR,changing thoracic pressures due to chest compressions and ventilation pressure infl uence venous return and cardiac output,respectively.[4-6]Novel mechanical ventilation modes that are synchronized to chest compressions may improve blood flow and oxygenation.[4]In this porcine trial,we investigated the feasibility of a specially designed chest compression synchronized ventilation(CCSV)mode with peak pressures limited to 40 mbar(1 mbar=0.1 kPa)and an experimental synchronized ventilation(SV)limited to 20 mbar,respectively,intended to achieve a more lung-protective ventilation pattern during *** evaluated whether the diff erent synchronized pressure levels ameliorate hemodynamics,gas exchange and pulmonary function and compared it to intermittent positive pressure ventilation(IPPV).

The cardiovascular aspects of a Ménière’s disease population——A pilot study

Introduction:MD is considered a rare *** adequate model that explains MD's pathophysiology is not well ***,the vascular theory of the disease has been ***:To characterize a MD population according to its cardiovascular risk and correlate it to the MD clinical ***:In this retrospective chart study the data of 31 MD patients observed between january 2017 and April 2018 in a tertiary university hospital were *** included in the study were diagnosed according to the Barany Society *** follow-ups,patients with autoimmune disease,atopy or allergy,major psychiatric disease and migraine were ***,gender,cardiovascular risk factors,audiometric and vestibular parameters,occurrence of MD attacks in the previous 6 months,vestibular medication in course and time course of MD were recorded and compared between groups(with and without cardiovascular risk factors).Results:31 patients(61.3%females)mean aged 60.3 years(±9.7)were studied.74%of the population had at least one risk factor and 51.6%of patients had attacks in the last 6 *** was a statistically significant difference in the occurrence of MD attacks in the last 6 months(p=0.014)between MD patients with and without risk *** PTA thresholds were higher and speech discrimination was lower in individuals with more cardiovascular risk ***:Treatment of MD focusing on vascular risk factors may allow a better control of symptoms and result in a decreased need for ablative procedures in this disorder.

Many applications, including optical multiplexing, switching, and detection, call for low-cost and broadband photonic devices with polarization-independent operation. While the silicon-on-insulator platform is well positioned to fulfill most of these requirements, its strong birefringence hinders the development of polarizationagnostic devices. Here we leverage the recently proposed bricked metamaterial topology to design, for the first time, to our knowledge, a polarization-independent 2 × 2 multimode interference coupler using standard 220 nm silicon thickness. Our device can be fabricated with a single etch step and is optimized for the O-band,covering a wavelength range of 160 nm with excess loss, polarization-dependent loss, and imbalance below 1 dB and phase errors of less than 5°, as demonstrated with full three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations.

Intermodal four-wave mixing(FWM)processes have recently attracted significant interest for all-optical signal processing applications thanks to the possibility to control the propagation properties of waves exciting distinct spatial modes of the same *** allows,in principle,to place signals in different spectral regions and satisfy the phase matching condition over considerably larger bandwidths compared to intramodal ***,the demonstrations reported so far have shown a limited bandwidth and suffered from the lack of on-chip components designed for broadband manipulation of different *** demonstrate here a silicon-rich silicon nitride wavelength converter based on Bragg scattering intermodal FWM,which integrates mode conversion,multiplexing and de-multiplexing functionalities *** system enables wavelength conversion between pump waves and a signal located in different telecommunication bands(separated by 60 nm)with a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 70 nm,which represents,to our knowledge,the widest bandwidth ever achieved in an intermodal FWM-based system.
