The role of rhizobacteria in rice plants: Growth and mitigation of toxicity

Allelopathic compounds reduce the growth and productivity of upland rice plants, especially in consecutive plantations. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens BRM-32111 and Burkholderia pyrrocinia BRM-32113 have been recorded as growth promoters in rice. This study was developed to understand the effect of the application of rhizobacteria on upland rice plants in consecutive plantations. Experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications of four treatments: rice seed inoculated with P. fluorescens BRM-32111, rice seed inoculated with B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113(both sown on soil with rice residue), non-inoculated plants sown on soil with rice residue(control with residue(WR)), and non-inoculated plants on soil with no residue(NR). Roots and seedling growth were adversely affected by allelopathic compounds in control WR plants. Plants inoculated with rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 or B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 induced an increase of 88% in biomass, 3% in the leaf area, 40% in length, 67% in root biomass, 21% in chlorophyll a, 53% in chlorophyll(a+b), 50% in rate of carbon assimilation(A), 227% in A/rubisco carboxylation efficiency(Ci) and 63% in water use efficiency(WUE) compared to control WR plants. These results indicate that rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 and B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 increase the tolerance of rice plants to stress from allelochemicals. There are possible practical agricultural applications of these results for mitigating the effects of environmental allelochemistry on upland rice.

Long-term response to avelumab and management of oligoprogression in Merkel cell carcinoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Merkel cell carcinoma(MCC)is a rare and aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasia,with high risk of recurrence and metastasis and poor *** checkpoint inhibitors,like the anti-programmed death-ligand 1 agent avelumab,were recently approved for the treatment of advanced ***,herein,report the first case of advanced MCC with oligoprogression managed with avelumab and local radical *** SUMMARY A 61-year-old man was presented to the hospital with sporadic fever and an exudative malodorous mass(10 cm of diameter),located on the right gluteal *** final diagnosis was MCC,cT4N3M1c(AJCC,TNM staging 8th edition,2017),with invasion of adjacent muscle,in-transit metastasis,and bone *** started chemotherapy(cisplatin and etoposide),and after six cycles,the main tumor increased,evidencing disease *** months later,the patient started second line treatment with avelumab(under an early access program).After two cycles of treatment,the lesion started to decrease,achieving a major *** progression was documented after 16 ***,as the tumor became resectable,salvage surgery was performed,while keeping the systemic treatment with *** the patient developed bilateral pneumonia,immunotherapy was *** than 2.5 years after surgery(last 19 mo without systemic therapy),the patient maintains complete local response and stable bone *** This report highlights the efficacy and long-term response of avelumab on the management of a chemotherapy resistant advanced MCC,with evidence of oligoprogression,in combination with local radical treatment.

A new species of the genus Atelopus,Atelopus fronterizo ***.,from eastern Panama is described herein based on molecular,morphological,and bioacoustic *** new species can be distinguished from its congeners occurring in the region by a combination of the following characters:(1)phalangeal reduction in thumb;(2)SvL(females only)(35.1-50.1;n=13),HW/SvL(0.23-0.34;n=59),EYND/HW(0.27-0.39;n=60),TIBL/SvL(0.41-0.56;n=58),and HAL/SvL(0.22-0.28;n=49);(3)dorsal color pattern with green or yellow background and extensive dark olive blotches forming transversal bands or mottling;(4)advertisement call duration 176-235 ms with 19-34 pulses,average pulse rate 131.69 pulses/s,and dominant frequency 2422.50-2606.50 *** new species is nested within the Central American clade of *** minimum Kimura‐2‐parameter(K2P)genetic divergence between Atelopus fronterizo *** its most phylogenetically similar congeners(*** and ***)is>2.6%for 16S and>4.9%for COI(Table 1).The phylogenetic relationship is strongly supported by ultrafast bootstrap values for the maximum-likelihood trees of both genetic markers(16S,96;COI,100,figure 1A).Bayesian analysis of the concatenated sequences resulted in a tree with similar topology and high posterior probability support(0.99;Supplementary figure S1).In addition,haplotype networks inferred from COI and 16S(Supplementary figure S2)showed a well-separated clade containing the new species(two for COI,four for 16S).

Risk factors for acute kidney injury after partial hepatectomy

To identify risk factors for the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in the postoperative period of partial hepatectomies. METHODSRetrospective analysis of 446 consecutive resections in 405 patients, analyzing clinical characteristics, preoperative laboratory data, intraoperative data, and postoperative laboratory data and clinical evolution. Adopting the International Club of Ascites criteria for the definition of AKI, potential predictors of AKI by logistic regression were identified. RESULTSOf the total 446 partial liver resections, postoperative AKI occurred in 80 cases (17.9%). Identified predictors of AKI were: Non-dialytic chronic kidney injury (CKI), biliary obstruction, the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, the extent of hepatic resection, the occurrence of intraoperative hemodynamic instability, post-hepatectomy haemorrhage, and postoperative sepsis. CONCLUSIONThe MELD score, the presence of non-dialytic CKI and biliary obstruction in the preoperative period, and perioperative hemodynamics instability, bleeding, and sepsis are risk factors for the occurrence of AKI in patients that underwent partial hepatectomy.

Maytenus erythroxylon Reissek(Celastraceae) ethanol extract presents antidiarrheal activity via antimotility and antisecretory mechanisms

To investigate the acute toxicity, phytochemical profile, antidiarrheal activity and mechanisms of action of Maytenus erythroxylon (M. erythroxylon) ethanol extract. METHODSA castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal activity. Intestinal transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to evaluate a possible antimotility effect. KATP channels, nitric oxide, presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory mechanisms. RESULTSAll tested doses of the extract (62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) possessed antidiarrheal activity, with a significant decrease of the evacuation index. This activity is possibly related to a reduced gastric emptying (125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) and to a decreased percentage of intestinal transit for all tested doses. That last effect seems to be modulated by nitric oxide, KATP channels and tissue adrenergic receptors. Besides, the extract also presented antisecretory effect due to a decrease of intestinal fluid accumulation. CONCLUSIONThe antidiarrheal effect of M. erythroxylon found in this study involves antimotility and antisecretory mechanisms that may be attributed to the chemical compounds found in this species: saponins, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes and steroids.

Crystal-oriented wrinkles with origami-type junctions in few-layer hexagonal boron nitride

Understanding layer interplay is the key to utilizing layered heterostructures formed by the stacking of different two-dimensional materials for device applications. Boron nitride has been demonstrated to be an ideal substrate on which to build graphene devices with improved mobilities. Here we present studies on the morphology and optical response of annealed few-layer hexagonal boron nitride flakes deposited on a silicon substrate that reveal the formation of linear wrinkles along well-defined crystallographic directions. The wrinkles formed a network of primarily threefold and occasionally fourfold origami-type junctions throughout the sample, and all threefold junctions and wrinkles formed along the armchair crystallographic direction. furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations yielded, through spontaneous symmetry breaking, wrinkle junction morphologies that are consistent with both the experimental results and the proposed origami-folding model. Our findings indicate that this morphology may be a general feature of several two-dimensional materials under proper stress-strain conditions, resulting in direct consequences in device strain engineering.

Development of temperature indicator prototype: Cardpaper coated with chitosan intelligent films

An intelligent and biodegradable material pack- aging was developed based on a natural and thermal-sensitive pigment. Anthocyanin (ATH, 0.50 g/100g) was incorporated into chitosan matrix films (2 g/100g) forming a chitosan intelligent film (C-ATH). The system is able to indicate the variation of temperature during distribution and storage chain of industrial products. The novelty of this work was an alternative packaging material that it is biodegradable and could inform any temperature variations on the range of 40?C - 70?C, by irreversible visual colour changes. The effects of temperature (10?C, 30?C and 50?C) and luminosity (0, 500 and 1000 l×) were analyzed on C-ATH using an experimental design of 2 variables, measuring the colour parameters (L*, a*, b*) and mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation break and Young’s modulus) as responses. C-ATH suspensions were applied as a coating on cardpaper surface forming a temperature indicator prototype (TIP). C-ATH darkened after being exposed to temper- atures above 50?C and luminosity of 1000 lx for 72 hours. TIP was obtained, without bubbles or defects, with reduced water absorption capacity. Irreversible visual colour change was verified on TIP exposed at 40?C independently of luminosity, turned gradually yellow. Chitosan suspensions containing ATH and applied as a coated on card paper sheets could be an alternative of biode-gradable material for packaging system that indicates efficiently temperature changes. This indicator system has potential application temperature range of 40?C to 70?C, such as food, pharmaceuticals, biological, agricultural and others products, that are highly dependent of storage temperature conditions.

Acute renal injury after partial hepatectomy

Currently, partial hepatectomy is the treatment of choice for a wide variety of liver and biliary conditions. Among the possible complications of partial hepatectomy, acute kidney injury(AKI) should be considered as an important cause of increased morbidity and postoperative mortality. Difficulties in the data analysis related to postoperative AKI after liver resections are mainly due to the multiplicity of factors to be considered in the surgical patients, moreover, there is no consensus of the exact definition of AKI after liver resection in the literature, which hampers comparison and analysis of the scarce data published on the subject. Despite this multiplicity of risk factors for postoperative AKI after partial hepatectomy, there are main factors that clearly contribute to its occurrence. first factor relates to large blood losses with renal hypoperfusion during the operation, second factor relates to the occurrence of post-hepatectomy liver failure with consequent distributive circulatory changes and hepatorenal syndrome. Eventually, patients can have more than one factor contributing to post-operative AKI, and frequently these combinations of acute insults can be aggravated by sepsis or exposure to nephrotoxic drugs.
