People’s perception and socioeconomic determinants of soil erosion:A case study of Samanalawewa watershed, Sri Lanka

Though soil erosion is an important concern in Sri Lanka, there is a dearth of baseline information on soil erosion in many ofits watersheds, which obstructs monitoring of soil erosion and mitigating its effects. In order to assess soil erosion in a critical watershed and to identify its determinants, the Samanalawewa watershed, which contains one of the main hydropower generating reservoirs in Sri Lanka, was selected for this study. Remote-sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) based modeling as well as field experiments were employed to assess and map soil erosion rates. Results indicated that the current rate of soil erosion ranges from 0 to 289 t/ha/yr, and that the average rate of soil erosion has been declining from 20 to 4 t/ha/yr over a period from 1986 to 2008. The current rate of soil erosion is, however, still about 14 to 33 times greater than the natural soil generation rate. Socioeconomic factors and peoples’ perception of soil erosion and soil conservation measures were examined using data collected through a household survey. Multiple regression analysis with eighteen covariates of socioeconomic characteristics yielded eleven socioeconomic variables, viz. household size, farm labor, education, land tenure, conservation cost, training, committee membership, professional competencies, income, distance, and financial capital as the predictor variables of soil erosion. Farmers identified improper soil and crop management practices as the major causes of erosion. The adoption of conservation measures, their effectiveness, and their impact on ecosystem services were also examined.

Air-side economizers are increasingly used to take advantage of“free-cooling”in data centers with the intent of reducing the carbon footprint of ***,they can introduce outdoor pollutants to indoor environment of data centers and cause corrosion damage to the information technology *** evaluate the reliability of information technology equipment under various thermal and air-pollution conditions,a mechanistic model based on multi-ion transport and chemical reactions was *** model was used to predict Cu corrosion caused by Cl_(2)-containing pollutant *** also accounted for the effects of temperature(25℃and 28℃),relative humidity(50%,75%,and 95%),and *** also identified higher air temperature as a corrosion barrier and higher relative humidity as a corrosion accelerator,which agreed well with the experimental *** average root mean square error of the prediction was 13.7Å.The model can be used to evaluate the thermal guideline for data centers design and operation when Cl_(2)is present based on pre-established acceptable risk of corrosion in data centers’environment.

In a unified regenerative fuel cell(URFC)or reversible fuel cell,the oxygen bifunctional catalyst must switch reversibly between the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),fuel cell mode,and the oxygen evolution reaction(OeR),electrolyzer ***,it is often unclear what effect alternating between ORR and OeR has on the electrochemical behavior and physiochemical properties of the ***,operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)is utilized to monitor the continuous and dynamic evolution of the Co,Mn,and Fe oxidation states of perovskite catalysts Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)(BSCF)and La_(0.4)Sr_(0.6)MnO_(3-δ)(LSM),while the potential is oscillated between reducing and oxidizing potentials with cyclic *** results reveal the importance of investigating bifunctional catalysts by alternating between fuel cell and electrolyzer operation and highlight the limitations and challenges of bifunctional *** is shown that the requirements for ORR and OeR performance are divergent and that the oxidative potentials of OeR are detrimental to ORR *** findings are used to give guidelines for future bifunctional catalyst ***,it is demonstrated how sunlight can be used to reactivate the ORR activity of LSM after rigorous cycling.

The thermomechanical fatigue behaviour of different high temperature alloys has been investigated and is under investigation respectively. The creep-fatigue behaviour of heat resistant steels was investigated by long-term service-type strain cycling tests simulating thermomechanical fatigue (TMF-) loading conditions at the heated surface of e.g. turbine rotors. Single-stage as well as three-stage cycles leads to similar results at the application of the damage accumulation rule. Life prediction which simulates typical combinations of cold starts, warm starts and hot starts has been established successfully for isothermal service-type loading and will be exceeded for thermomechanical loading. Long-term thermomechanical fatigue testing of Thermal Barrier Coating systems show typical delamination damage. An advanced TMF cruciform testing system enables complex multiaxial loading.

Objective To assess the Affordable Care Act(ACA)Medicaid expansion’s impact on new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses in community health centres(CHCs).Design Rates of new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses were computed using generalised estimating equation Poisson models and we tested the difference-in difference(DID)pre-ACA versus post-ACA in states that expanded Medicaid compared with those that did *** We used electronic health record data(pre-ACA:1 January 2012-31 December 2013-post-ACA:1 January 2014-31 December 2016)from the Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center Network clinical data *** included clinics with≥50 patients contributing to person-time at risk in each study *** Patients aged 19-64 with≥1 ambulatory visit in the study period were *** then excluded patients who were pregnant during the study period(N=127530).For the hypertension outcome,we excluded individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension prior to the start of the study period,those who had a hypertension diagnosis on their first visit to a clinic or their first visit after 3 years without a visit,and those who had a diagnosis more than 3 years after their last visit(pre-ACA non-expansion N=130973;expansion N=193198;post-ACA non-expansion N=186341;expansion N=251015).For the diabetes analysis,we excluded patients with a diabetes diagnosis prior to study start,on their first visit or first visit after inactive patient status,and diagnosis while not an active patient(pre-ACA non-expansion N=145435;expansion N=198558;post-ACA non-expansion N=215039;expansion N=264644).Results In non-expansion states,adjusted hypertension diagnosis rates saw a relative decrease of 6%,while in expansion states,the adjusted rates saw a relative increase of 7%(DID 1.14,95%CI 1.11 to 1.18).For diabetes diagnosis,adjusted rates in non-expansion states experienced a significant relative increase of 28%and in expansion states the relative increase was 25%

In this contribution,inspired by the excellent resource management and material transport function of leaf veins,the electrical transport function of metallized leaf veins is mimicked from the material transport function of the vein *** electroless copper plating on real leaf vein networks with copper thickness of only several hundred nanometre up to several micrometre,certain leaf veins can be converted to transparent conductive electrodes with an ultralow sheet resistance 100 times lower than that of state-of-the-art indium tin oxide thin films,combined with a broadband optical transmission of above 80%in the UV–VIS–IR ***,the resource efficiency of the vein-like electrode is characterized by the small amount of material needed to build up the networks and the low copper consumption during *** particular,the high current density transport capability of the electrode of>6000 A cm^−2 was *** superior properties of the vein-like structures inspire the design of high-performance transparent conductive electrodes without using critical materials and may significantly reduce the Ag consumption down toe current level for mass production of solar cells and will contribute greatly to the electrode for high power density concentrator solar cells,high power density Li-ion batteries,and supercapacitors.

Contemporary biomechanical theory of traumatic brain injury has its foundation in Holbourn’s thesis on shear strain and Ommaya’s primate experimentation demonstrating the role of rotation in a variety of lesions including subdural hematoma(SDH)and diffuse axonal *** human observations have since confirmed,for the most part,the early *** concerns regarding primate research,however,have prompted in vitro models,which in turn has led to challenges with respect to the correlation between in vitro observations and the clinical *** these challenges,medicolegal proceedings may call upon biomechanical engineers to reconstruct complex injury scenarios and offer opinions on the scientific plausibility of clinical disease states,such as SDH,hemorrhagic retinopathy,and cerebral edema,associated with hypothetical or proffered action sequences during the course of an unwitnessed *** is important to note,however,that in vitro models by their nature are low‑evidence quality studies that attempt to advance hypotheses but do not address cause and *** a whole,biomechanical models,as they pertain specifically to the brain and spine,are mathematically ***,endpoints of limited relevance are relied upon(e.g.,skull fracture thresholds),which predictably overestimate the in vivo risk of significant *** the increasing role of biomechanical engineering in the interpretation of fatal pediatric head trauma,a heightened awareness of the limitations warranted.
