The aims of this study.were to determine the prevalence of chronic obstructive arterial disease of the lower limbs and to identify.the factors which contribute to its occurrence in a population of adult African francophone diabetics. This was a prospective study.which included all consenting diabetics sy.tematically.over a 6 month period at the out patient clinic or during hospital admission. Patients with incomplete data were excluded. An ankle sy.tolic pressure index of less than 0.9 was required for the diagnosis of obstructive arterial disease. Demographic parameters, the characteristics of the diabetes, the quality.of blood sugar control, the presence of classical cardiovascular risk factors and the results of their treatment, the nature and distribution of the arterial lesions on ultrasonography.were all studied. A univariate analy.is and a multivariate analy.is of their correspondences were undertaken to determine the correlation coefficients. The prevalence of arterial disease of the lower limbs in the 102 diabetics retained for the study.average age 53 y.ars)was 33.3%. The arterial disease was distal in 47%of cases and diffuse in 26.5%of cases. The arterial wall was calcified in 19.6%of cases. In univariate analy.is only.age was correlated with arterial disease(p=0.04), the duration of diabetes tended to be related(p=0.07). In multi-factorial analy.is of correspondences with other factors, hy.ertension, hy.erlipidaemia and multiple cardiovascular risk factors seemed to be correlated with arterial disease of the lower limbs. Therefore, arterial disease of the lower limbs is very.common and an early.complication of diabetic patients in Benin. Predisposing factors were age and, probably. duration of diabetes, hy.ertension, hy.erlipidaemia and multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hy.ertension in Ty.e 2 Diabetics in Benin

Background: Couple High Blood Pressure (HBP)-Diabetes is a morbid association and a public health problem. The aim of this study.was to determine the actual epidemiological profile of HBP in ty.e 2 diabetic. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and analy.ical study.was conducted at Banque d’insuline of Cotonou, Poly.linique Atinkanmey.and CHUD-Ouémé-Plateau. The study.took place over a period of 06 months from March 01 to August 30, 2014. The study.included patients with ty.e 2 diabetes mellitus seen at consultation who agreed to participate in the study. Results: The survey.involved 400 individuals. Among them, 34% were male and the sex ratio was 0.48. The mean age was 55.6 ± 10.3 y.ars (range 28 - 87 y.ars). The prevalence of hy.ertension in ty.e 2 diabetic patients was 70%. The risk factors significantly.associated with HBP were age above 55 y.ars (p = 0.000), abdominal obesity.(p = 0.036), a diabetes duration above 10 y.ars (p = 0.009). Complications significantly.associated with HBP were stroke (p = 0.013) and diabetic foot (p = 0.044). Conclusion: HBP-ty.e 2 Diabetes association is frequent in Benin.

This paper is to determine the contribution of the ambulatory.measure of blood pressure (AMBP) to the detection of hy.ertension in ty.e 2 diabetic black African in Benin. Hy.ertension can stay.unknown in diabetic patients. Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and analy.ical study.at “Banqued’ insuline” of Cotonou, Poly.linique Atinkanmey.and CHUD-Ouémé-Plateau. The study.took place over a period of 6 months from March 01 to August 30 2014. The study.included patients with ty.e 1 or 2 diabetes who agreed to participate in the study.and who made ambulatory.measure of blood pressure (AMBP). Statistical analy.is was done by.using the software Excel 2013 and SPSS versus 18.0. Results: Sixty.six patients were included. Forty.one (62.1%) among them were female;sex-ratio was 0.61. The mean of age was 48.9 ± 8.8 y.ars with range from 30 to 68 y.ars. The prevalence of masked hy.ertension in ty.e 2 diabetics was 37.9% (25/66). Abdominal obesity.was the significative factor related to masked high blood pressure (HBP) in the ty.e 2 diabetics (p = 0.005). Among diabetic with masked hy.ertension, 14 (56%) had “no dipper” profile and 11 (44%) had “dipper” profile. Conclusion: The ambulatory.measure of blood pressure (AMBP) may.take an important place in the detection of Hy.ertension in black ty.e 2 diabetic subjects.

Background: Abdominal obesity.is often associated with ty.e 2 diabetes, especially.in the context of metabolic sy.drome. The objective of this study.was to determine the prevalence of corpuscular and abdominal obesity.in ty.e 2 diabetes in the two major cities in southern Benin. Methods: It was a multicentric, prospective, descriptive and analy.ical study.that had as framework the center for screening and monitoring of diabetes “Banque d’insuline” of Cotonou, the Poly.linic Atinkanmey.of Cotonou and the Internal Medicine Department of the Departmental University.Hospital of Ouémé-Plateau in Porto-Novo. The study.was a six-month period (March-August 2014). Results: We included a total of 400 ty.e 2 diabetics. Women represented 66% of the study.population with a sex ratio of 0.52. The mean age of patients was 55.6 ± 10.3 y.ars with extremes of 28 and 87 y.ars. The prevalence of corpuscular obesity.(BMI ≥ 30 Kg/m2) was 38.5% in our study.population. For the gender, it was 48.5% in women and 19.1% in men with a statistically.significant difference (p = 0.0001). The overall prevalence of abdominal obesity.in our study.population was 87.8%. Almost all of our diabetic women (99.2%) had abdominal obesity.versus 65.4% in men (p = 0.0001). All the patients with ty.e 2 diabetes having corpuscular obesity.had also abdominal obesity. This abdominal obesity.was observed in 80.1% of non-obese diabetic (p = 0.0001). On the contrary. the majority.of patients with abdominal obesity.(56.12%) had a BMI below 30 kg/m2. Conclusion: This study.shows a high prevalence of abdominal obesity.(87.8%) in our study.population compared with the corpuscular obesity.(38.5%). Hence, the importance of measuring waist circumference is more than BMI in diabetic patients.

Diabetic retinopathy.(DR) is one of the microvascular complications of diabetes. The aim of this study.was to analy.e the risk factors associated with the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy.(DR) at the National University.Hospital Center-Hubert Koutoukou MAGA (CNHU-HKM). Patients and method: this was a descriptive and analy.ical cross-sectional study.with prospective data collection. It was carried out over a three-month period from July.10 to October 10, 2019. It concerned all patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and who consulted in the Endocrinology.department during the study.period. Results: the frequency.of diabetic retinopathy.was 30.46% (53/174 patients). A female predominance was observed with a sex ratio (M/F) of 0.57. The main modifiable risk factors were represented by.occupation and those that were not modifiable were represented by.the presence of old nephropathy. gly.ated hemoglobin, age of discovery.of diabetes and its length of service. Diabetic retinopathy.is a serious condition that can ultimately.lead to blindness. The frequency.of DR remains high in our study.

Background: Data on diabetes mellitus in general population in Benin is scarce. This study.aimed therefore to assess prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus in Benin. Methods: The study.consisted of a cross-sectional survey. using the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s instrument for stepwise surveillance (STEPS) of non-communicable diseases risk factors. A five-stage random sample of 25 to 64 y.ars old male and female adults living in Benin participated in structured interviews and their size, weight and blood pressure were measured according to standardized procedures. Gly.aemia was measured using ACCUTREND? test strips for capillary.blood glucose. Prevalence and means were computed with their 95% confidence interval and standard error respectively. taking into account the sampling design. Prevalence was compared by.Khi2 and means by.Student’s t test. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to identify.socio-demographic diabetes’s risk factors. Results: A total of 3772 adults participated in the study. The average age of respondents was 44.2 y.ars. Overall, 68.3% of subjects were illiterate, 82.4% lived in rural areas, 82.57% were self-employ.d, 20% overweight, 7.51% obese and the prevalence of hy.ertension was 29.5 p.100. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 1.4 p.100 [CI95% = (0.94:2.05)]. This prevalence was higher in men than in women (2.1% vs. 0.8%, p = 0.0031). This prevalence was higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The Littoral department had the highest prevalence (3.4%), followed by.the Collines department (2.7%), Donga (2.4%) and Borgou (2.3%). As many.as 49.3% of subjects diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were not aware of their status. The age group of 56 - 64 y.ars had the highest risk [OR = 6.6, IC95% = (1.6;22.4)]. Influence of Antiretroviral Therapy.on the Metabolic Profile of People Living with HIV Followed at University.Hospital, Cotonou, Benin

Introduction: Since the advent of antiretroviral therapy. the vital prognosis of people living with HIV (PLWHA) has improved significantly. However, the risk of metabolic complications is high, thus making the bed of cardiovascular disease. Our objective was to compare the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities among PLWHA receiving ARVs to that observed in those who are not treated. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study.(January.to April 2010) at the PLWHA ambulatory.care center of national university.hospital (CNHU-Hubert K. Maga) in Cotonou, Bénin. We recruited 420 PLWHA (210 treated for at least 6 months and 210 untreated). We determined the prevalence of metabolic sy.drome (MS) defined by.the criteria of NCEP-ATP III, and the prevalence of abnormal glucose and lipid, and lipody.trophy. Association between metabolic sy.drome and ARVs used was analy.ed by.binomial regression. Confidence intervals were calculated at 95% and 5% alpha level. Results: The prevalence of MS was 16% (18% of patients treated vs. 13% of non-treated, p = 0.18). That of hy.ergly.emia was 18% (30% of patients treated vs. 6% of untreated;p y.trophy.in 210 patients was 29% (lipoatrophy.6%, lipohy.ertrophy.8%, mixed form 6%). Factors associated with metabolic sy.drome were age, hy.ertension, diabetes (personal or family., BMI, exposure to stavudine (OR = 1.59 [1.02 to 2.47], p = 0.04) and indinavir booted with ritonavir (OR = 2.23 [1.11 to 4 46], p = 0.02). Conclusion: The metabolic abnormalities are more common in PLWHA treated with ARVs. Preventing these anomalies should be made to the initiation of antiretroviral therapy.and during the therapeutic monitoring.
