High lead (Pb) contam.nation of soils is a threat to hum.n health. Indirect ingestion occurs within the food chain through activities such as growing vegetables with an ability to accum.late lead in edible tissues. m.ny university extension system. recom.end growing vegetables in raised beds to avoid lead contam.nation. However, there is lim.ted scientific evidence of the efficacy of raised beds in reducing lead uptake in vegetable crops. To address the soil-lead exposure pathway from.garden to consum.tion, this study supplem.nts gaps in the literature pertaining to raised-bed garden practices by evaluating lining m.terials. Sim.lated raised beds were constructed to evaluate barriers (neoprene rubber sheeting, landscape fabric and a no barrier control) placed between contam.nated (500 ppm. and uncontam.nated garden m.dia. The resulting data suggests that neoprene rubber sheeting is not an effective barrier to prevent lead uptake in vegetable crops. In fact, the neoprene barrier contained elevated am.unts of lead contributing to higher levels of lead (p ≤ 0.05) within the plant tissue as com.ared to a no barrier treatm.nt.

Background: m.lk lipids originate from.cytoplasm.c lipid droplets(LD) that are synthesized and secreted from.m.m.ary epithelial cells by a unique m.m.rane-envelopm.nt process. Butyrophilin 1 A1(BTN1 A1) is one of the m.m.rane proteins that surrounds LD, but its role in bovine m.m.ary lipid droplet synthesis and secretion is not well ***: The objective was to knockout BTN1 A1 in bovine m.m.ary epithelial cells(Bm.C) via the CRISPR/Cas9 system.and evaluate LD form.tion, abundance of lipogenic enzym.s, and content of cell m.m.rane phospholipid(PL) species. Average LD diam.ter was determ.ned via Oil Red O staining, and profiling of cell m.m.rane phospholipid species via liquid chrom.tography-tandem.m.ss spectrom.try(LC-m./m.).Results: Lentivirus-m.diated infection of the Cas9/sg RNA expression vector into Bm.C resulted in production of a hom.zygous clone BTN1 A1^((-/-)). The LD size and content decreased following BTN1 A1 gene knockout. The m.RNA abundance of fatty acid synthase(FASN) and peroxisom. proliferator-activated receptor-gam.a(PPARG) was downregulated in the BTN1 A1^((-/-))clone. Subcellular analyses indicated that BTN1 A1 and LD were co-localized in the cytoplasm. BTN1 A1 gene knockout increased the percentage of phosphatidylethanolam.ne(PE) and decreased phosphatidylcholine(PC), which resulted in a lower PC/PE ***: Results suggest that BTN1 A1 plays an im.ortant role in regulating LD synthesis via a m.chanism.involving m.m.rane phospholipid com.osition.

A three-dim.nsional m.del of near-surface shear-wave velocity in the deep alluvial basin underlying the m.tropolitan area of Las Vegas, Nevada （USA）, is being developed for earthquake site response projections. The velocity dataset, which includes 230 m.asurem.nts, is interpolated across the m.del using depth-dependent correlations of velocity with sedim.nt type. The sedim.nt-type database contains m.re than 1 400 well and borehole logs. Sedim.nt sequences reported in logs are assigned to one of four units. A characteristic shear-wave velocity profile is developed for each unit by analyzing closely spaced pairs of velocity profiles and well or borehole logs. The resulting velocity m.del exhibits reasonable values and patterns, although it does not explicitly honor the m.asured shear-wave velocity profiles. Site response investigations that applied a prelim.nary version of the velocity m.del support a two-zone ground-shaking hazard m.del for the valley. Areas in which clay predom.nates in the upper 30 m.are predicted to have stronger ground m.tions than the rest of the basin.

A new portable in situ flum.(PISF) for m.asuring critical bed shear stress(CBSS) was developed in this study. The PISF consists of an open bottom.sedim.nt erosion cham.er and an electrically-driven *** m.st existing in situ flum.s with sim.lar designs, the new PISF does not rely on m.nitoring the flow conditions or particle density in the sedim.nt erosion cham.er; instead, it is a pre-calibrated *** calibration was perform.d by first determ.ning CBSS of various selected sedim.nt sam.les of known particle size and density(using the law of the wall), based on flow velocity-depth profiles m.asured in a6 m.straight open-channel flum. using a Particle Im.ge Velocim.try(PIV) system. These sam. particles of known CBSS were then used in the new in-situ flum. under controlled lab conditions to obtain a series of calibration curves of CBSS vs. pum. electrical power. A wide variety of particle types and sizes(sim.lated sedim.nts) were used in this two-step calibration procedure to widen CBSS m.asurem.nt range and sim.late cohesive force effects. The size of the PISF is m.ch sm.ller and m.re practical than other sim.lar devices as lam.llar flow conditions are not required and it can be applied to a wide range of sedim.nt types including cohesive sedim.nts.

Constructing a low cost,and high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction(OER)electrocatalyst is of great significance for im.roving the perform.nce of alkaline electrolyzer,which is still suffering from.highenergy ***,we created a porous iron phosphide and tungsten oxide self-supporting electrocatalyst with oxygen-containing vacancies on foam.nickel(Fe_(2)P-WO_(2.92)/NF)through a facile insitu growth,etching and phosphating *** sequence-controllable strategy will not only generate oxygen vacancies and im.rove the charge transfer between Fe_(2)P and WO_(2.92) com.onents,but also im.rove the catalyst porosity and expose m.re active *** studies illustrate that the Fe_(2)P-WO_(2.92)/NF catalyst presents good OER activity with a low overpotential of 267 m. at 100 m. cm.(-2),a sm.ll Tafel slope of 46.3 m. dec^(-1),high electrical conductivity,and reliable stability at high current density(100 m. cm.(-2) for over 60 h in 1.0 m.KOH solution).m.st significantly,the operating cell voltage of Fe_(2)P-WO_(2.92)/NF‖Pt/C is as low as 1.90 V at 400 m. cm.(-2) in alkaline condition,which is one of the lowest reported in the *** electrocatalytic m.chanism.shows that the oxygen vacancies and the synergy between Fe_(2)P and WO_(2.92) can adjust the electronic structure and provide m.re reaction sites,thereby synergistically increasing OER *** work provides a feasible strategy to fabricate high-efficiency and stable non-noble m.tal OER electrocatalysts on the engineering interface.

The Tongariro Power Developm.nt Schem.（TPDS） is used to regulate flow in the headwaters of the largest catchm.nt on the North Island of New Zealand（the Waikato）.Two sm.ll dam.,the Rangipo Dam.and the Poutu Intake Dam.were constructed in 1973 and *** flow regim. of the river is m.naged to divert freshes into the power schem.,but allows flows larger than 100 m.s;to be released,to rework and transport sedim.nt through the catchm.nt.
