High lead (Pb) contamination of soils is a threat to human health. Indirect ingestion occurs within the food chain through activities such as growing vegetables with an ability to accumulate lead in edible tissues. many university extension systems recommend growing vegetables in raised beds to avoid lead contamination. However, there is limited scientific evidence of the efficacy of raised beds in reducing lead uptake in vegetable crops. To address the soil-lead exposure pathway from garden to consumption, this study supplements gaps in the literature pertaining to raised-bed garden practices by evaluating lining materials. Simulated raised beds were constructed to evaluate barriers (neoprene rubber sheeting, landscape fabric and a no barrier control) placed between contaminated (500 ppm) and uncontaminated garden media. The resulting data suggests that neoprene rubber sheeting is not an effective barrier to prevent lead uptake in vegetable crops. In fact, the neoprene barrier contained elevated amounts of lead contributing to higher levels of lead (p ≤ 0.05) within the plant tissue as compared to a no barrier treatment.

Greenhouse vegetable production in Canadian Prairies is important for creating a sustainable regional food economy,especially in northern *** study included the estimation of heating demand for year-round production and evaluation of the economic feasibility of greenhouse vegetable production(tomato,cucumber,and pepper)in a conceptually designed greenhouse(0.6 ha)located in remote northern communities in Saskatchewan,*** heating simulation was based on a greenhouse heating simulation model(GREENHEAT)developed by the authors *** simulation results showed that the annual heating requirement for the production of tomato,cucumber,and pepper are 1486 mJ m^2,1657 mJ m^2,and 1754 mJ m^2,*** economic analysis indicates the net return(NR)from the production of tomato,cucumber,and pepper,are C$69.2/m^2(in Canadian dollar,CAD),C$41.5/m^2,and C$43.8/m^2,respectively,based on the market price C$3.5/kg,C$2.7/kg,and C$8.0/kg,and yields of 55.0 kg m^-2,65.0 kg m^-2,and 23.0 kg m^-*** net present value(NPV)for the tomato,cucumber,and pepper production are C$1.9 m,C$1.2 m,and C$1.1 m,respectively,and the benefit-cost ratio(BCR)are 1.38,1.21,and *** economic feasibility analysis indicates the year-round production of vegetables in a greenhouse at remote northern Saskatchewan would be economically profitable.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure and contributes to an estimated 25% of deaths worldwide. Despite numerous treatment options, estimates project that reasonable blood pressure(BP) control is achieved in only about half of hypertensive patients. Improvements in the detection and management of hypertension will undoubtedly be accomplished through a better understanding of the complex etiology of this disease and a more comprehensive inventory of the genes and genetic variants that influence BP regulation. Recent studies(primarily in pre-clinical models) indicate that the small GTPase Rho A and its downstream target, Rho kinase, play an important role in regulating BP homeostasis. Herein, we summarize the underlying mechanisms and highlight signaling pathways and regulators that impart tight spatial-temporal control of Rho A activity. We also discuss known allelic variations in the Rho A pathway and consider how these polymorphisms may affect genetic risk for hypertension and its clinical manifestations. Finally, we summarize the current(albeit limited) clinical data on the efficacy of targeting the Rho A pathway in hypertensive patients.

Present-day power conversion and conditioning systems focus on transferring energy from a single type of power source into a single type of load or energy storage system (ESS). While these systems can be optimized within their specific topology (e.g. mPPT for solar applications and BmS for batteries), the topologies are not easily adapted to accept a wide range of power flow operating conditions. With a hybrid approach to energy storage and power flow, a system can be designed to operate at its most advantageous point, given the operating conditions. Based on the load demand, the system can select the optimal power source and ESS. This paper will investigate the feasibility of combining two types of power sources (main utility grid and photovoltaics (PV)) along with two types of ESS (ultra-capacitors and batteries). The simulation results will show the impact of a hybrid ESS on a grid-tied residential microgrid system performance under various operating scenarios.

In stressful or anxiety-provoking situations,most people with Parkinson’s disease(PD)experience a general worsening of motor symptoms,including their gait ***,a proportion of patients actually report benefits from experiencing-or even purposely inducing-stressful or high-arousal *** data from a large-scale international survey study among 4324 people with PD and gait impairments within the online Fox Insight(USA)and ParkinsonNEXT(NL)cohorts,we demonstrate that individuals with PD deploy an array of mental state alteration strategies to cope with their gait ***,these strategies differ along an axis of arousal-some act to heighten,whereas others diminish,overall sympathetic ***,our observations suggest that arousal may act as a double-edged sword for gait control in *** propose a theoretical,neurobiological framework to explain why heightened arousal can have detrimental effects on the occurrence and severity of gait impairments in some individuals,while alleviating them in ***,we postulate that this seemingly contradictory phenomenon is explained by the inherent features of the ascending arousal system:namely,that arousal is related to task performance by an inverted u-shaped curve(the so-called Yerkes and Dodson relationship).We propose that the noradrenergic locus coeruleus plays an important role in modulating PD symptom severity and expression,by regulating arousal and by mediating network-level functional integration across the *** ability of the locus coeruleus to facilitate dynamic‘cross-talk’between distinct,otherwise largely segregated brain regions may facilitate the necessary cerebral compensation for gait impairments in *** the presence of suboptimal arousal,compensatory networks may be too segregated to allow for adequate ***,with supraoptimal arousal,increased cross-talk between competing inputs of these complementary networks may emerge and become dysf

Objective: Femalemcoln1-/- mice exhibit progressive progesterone (P4) deficiency, luteal cell degeneration, and premature embryo implantation failure at 5 months old. We attempted to rescue embryo implantation in non-virginmcoln1-/- mice (5-6 months old) with exogenous P4 treatment on days 1.5 post-coitum (D1.5), D2.5, and D3.5, and observed partially restored luteal cell morphology on D4.5, but unexpectedly found 17β-estradiol (E2) contamination in the P4 working solution. In this study, we aim to investigate exogenous P4 and/or E2 for the partial recovery of luteal cell morphology in infertilemcoln1-/- ***: Control and non-virginmcoln1-/- mice (5-6 months old) were treated with newly ordered vehicle, P4, E2, or P4 + E2 on D1.5 and D2.5 and dissected on D3.5 for P4 and E2 measurements, ovary histology, immunofluorescence, lipid droplet staining, and transmission electron ***: E2 treatment significantly increased serum P4 levels in D3.5mcoln1-/- mice. E2 and P4 + E2 treatments, but not P4 treatment alone, largely improved the morphology of D3.5mcoln1-/- corpora lutea, indicated by a more contiguous web-like collagen IV expression pattern, increased heat shock protein 60 expression, and reduced accumulation of large lipid droplets. Transmission electron microscopy revealed extremely enlarged autophagosomes and lipid droplets, lysosomes with lamellar structures, and mitochondria with reduced cristae in vehicle-treated D3.5mcoln1-/- luteal cells, while in E2-treated D3.5mcoln1-/- luteal cells, extremely enlarged autophagosomes and lipid droplets were reduced, indicating improved luteal cell ***: These findings reveal protective effects of high levels of exogenous E2 on P4 production and lysosomal function inmcoln1-/- luteal cells.
