Phytic acid-derivative Co_(2)b-CoPO_x coralloidal structure with delicate boron vacancy for enhanced hydrogen generation from sodium borohydride

Application of transition metal boride(TMb) catalysts towards hydrolysis of NabH_(4) holds great significance to help relieve the energy crisis. Herein, we present a facile and versatile metal-organic framework(MOF) assisted strategy to prepare Co_(2)b-CoPO_x with massive boron vacancies by introducing phytic acid(PA) cross-linked Co complexes that are acquired from reaction of PA and ZIF-67 into cob.l. boride. The PA etching effectively breaks down the structure of ZIF-67 to create more vacancies, favoring the maximal exposure of active sites and elevation of catalytic activity. Experimental results demonstrate a drastic electronic interaction between Co and the dopant phosphorous(P), thereby the robustly electronegative P induces electron redistribution around the metal species, which facilitates the dissociation of b-H bond and the adsorption of H_(2)O molecules. The vacancy-rich Co_(2)b-CoPO_x catalyst exhibits scalable performance, characterized by a high hydrogen generation rate(HGR) of 7716.7 m l min^(-1)g^(-1) and a low activation energy(Ea) of 44.9 k J/mol, rivaling state-of-the-art catalysts. This work provides valuable insights for the development of advanced catalysts through P doping and boron vacancy engineering and the design of efficient and sustainable energy conversion systems.

Decomposing the drivers of residential space cooling energy consumption in EU-28 countries using a panel data approach

The Sensitivity of the Critical Resistance Model to Detect Sex-Related Differences in Fatigue During Submaximal Muscular Contractions

E-Cigarette Survey among Student Pharmacists Reveals Troubling Results

The rise in “vaping”-associated deaths in the United States raises serious concerns. A justification for some level of risk is that e-cigarettes might provide a “reverse-gateway” from smoking traditional cigarettes to a less-harmful alternative. But are users actually smokers? We developed an electronic on-line survey to gather data regarding e-cigarette usage in a target study population of pharmacy students. The survey was created using Google Forms to collect the responses anonymously. We surveyed medical-savvy healthcare students about their e-cigarette use, and whether or not their healthcare providers were aware of their e-cigarette use. Although nearly one-fourth of a convenience sampling of 134 pharmacy-student respondents (23.9%) reported using e-cigarettes, only 2.0% reported prior regular cigarette use, 28% used cartridges containing nicotine and only 11.2% had tried and wanted to quit. The majority (64.1%) reported that their healthcare providers did not ask about such use, and respondents did not volunteer this information. The results of this pilot survey reveal a significant e-cigarette use among health-aware pharmacy students, and they do not support the notion that the respondents do so to quit smoking. The observation that most of the students’ healthcare providers did not inquire about their e-cigarette use, coupled with the finding that users did not volunteer their vaping behavior, suggests that the information should be included when getting a medical history. Further research is needed to determine what behavioral factors may play a role in this type of decision-making among student healthcare professionals.

Intelligent diagnosis of northern corn leaf blight with deep learning model

Maize(Zea mays l.), also known as corn, is the third most cultivated crop in the world. Northern corn leaf blight(NClb) is a glob.l.y devastating maize foliar disease caused by Setosphaeria turcica(luttrell) leonard and Suggs. Early intelligent diagnosis and warning is an effective and economical strategy to control this disease. Today, deep learning is beginning to play an essential role in agriculture. Notably, deep convolutional neural networks(DCNN) are amongst the most successful machine learning techniques in plant disease detection and diagnosis. Our study aims to identify NClb in the maize-producing area in Jilin Province based on several DCNN models. We established a database of 985 leaf images of healthy and infected maize and applied data augmentation techniques including image segmentation, image resizing, image cropping, and image transformation, to expand to 30 655 images. Several proven convolutional neural networks, such as AlexNet, Google Net, VGG16, and VGG19, were then used to identify diseases. based on the best performance of the DCNN pre-trained model Google Net, some of the recent loss functions developed for deep facial recognition tasks such as Arc Face, Cos Face, and A-Softmax were applied to detect NClb. We found that a pre-trained Google Net architecture with the Softmax loss function can achieve an excellent accuracy of 99.94% on NClb diagnosis. The analysis was implemented in Python with two deep learning frameworks, Pytorch and Keras. The techniques, training, validation, and test results are presented in this paper. Overall, our study explores intelligent identification technology for NClb and effectively diagnoses NClb from images of maize.

Total organic halogen(TOX) in human urine: A halogen-specific method for human exposure studies

Disinfection by-products（DbPs） are a complex mixture of compounds unintentionally formed as a result of disinfection processes used to treat drinking water. Effects of long-term exposure to DbPs are mostly unknown and were the subject of recent epidemiological studies. However,most bioanalytical methods focus on a select few DbPs. In this study, a new comprehensive bioanalytical method has been developed that can quantify mixtures of organic halogenated compounds, including DbPs, in human urine as total organic chlorine（TOCl）, total organic bromine（TObr）, and total organic iodine（TOI）. The optimized method consists of urine dilution, adsorption to activated carbon, pyrolysis of activated carbon, absorption of gases in an aqueous solution, and halide analysis with ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Spike recoveries for TOCl, TObr, and TOI measurements ranged between 78% and 99%. Average TOCl, TObr, and TOI concentrations in five urine samples from volunteers who consumed tap water were 1850, 82, and 21.0 μg/l as X^-, *** who consumed spring water（control） had TOCl, TObr, and TOI average concentrations in urine of 1090, 88, and 10.3 μg/l as X^-, respectively. TOCl and TOI in the urine samples from tap water consumers were higher than the control. However, TObr was slightly lower in tap water urine samples compared to mineral water urine samples, indicating other sources of environmental exposure other than drinking water. A larger sample population that consumes tap water from different cities and mineral water is needed to determine TOCl, TObr, and TOI exposure from drinking water.
