The presence of Hg in the aqueous media is known to cause severe health issues in both humans and *** technologies and especially adsorbents have been applied for its removal. In this study, a graphene oxide–carbon composite(GO–CC) as a new adsorbent was prepared by sol gel procedure and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, BET and EDX. The effects of different variables including solution p H, contact time, adsorbent dose and GO ratio in adsorbent matrix on the removal capacity of Hg were studied. The isotherm data correlated well with the Langmuir isotherm model. Further analysis recommended that the Hg^(2+) adsorption process is governed by the intra-particle and external mass transfer, in which the film diffusion was the rate restrictive step. The presented composite has maximum absorption capacity, q_(max) of 68.8 mg·g^(-1), which is comparable with carbon based adsorbent reported in the previous publications.

We present a first-principles calculation on the electronic and optical properties of a hybrid nanotube system consisting of a （13, 0） single-walled carbon nanotube encapsulated by polythiophene. This hybrid-system represents a complete new type of matter and is known as the peapod system. We analyze bow the polythiophene changes the electronic and optical properties of the nanotube. In particular, we examine new features in the dielectric function due to the transitions between the states of the polymer and the nanotube. The electronic structure of the combined system appears to be a simple superposition of the individual constituents. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate van der Waals interaction as the bonding mechanism between the tube and the encapsulated molecule.

Three phase PebaxMH 1657/PEG-ran-PPG/CuBTC（polymer/liquid/solid） was successfully deposited as a selective layer on a porous Polysulfone（PSF） support. In fact, the beneficial properties of PEG（high selectivity） with those of PPG（high permeability, amorphous） have been combined with superior properties of mixed matrix membrane（MMMs）. The membranes were characterized by DSC, TGA and SEM, while CuBTC was characterized by COand CHadsorption test. Statistically based experimental design（central composite design, CCD） was applied to analyze and optimize the effect of PEG-ran-PPG（10–50 wt%） and CuBTC（0–20 wt%） mass contents on the COpermeance and CO/CHideal selectivity. Based on the regression coefficients of the obtained models, the COpermeance was notably influenced by PEG-ran-PPG,while CuBTC has the most significant effect on the CO/CHideal selectivity. Under the optimum conditions（PEG-ran-PPG: 32.76 wt% and CuBTC: 20 wt%）, nearly 620% increase in the COpermeance and43% enhancement in the CO/CHideal selectivity was observed compared to the neat Pebax. The effect of pressure（3, 9 and 15 bar） on the pure and mixed gas separation performance of the composite membranes was also investigated. The high solubility of COin the membranes resulted in the enhancement of COpermeability with increase in gas pressure.

We have considered a hot neutron star with a quark core, a mixed phase of quark-hadron matter, and a hadronic matter crust and have determined the equation of state of the hadronic phase and the quark phase. We have then found the equation of state of the mixed phase under the Gibbs conditions. Finally, we have computed the structure of a hot neutron star with a quark core and compared our results with those of the neutron star without a quark core. For the quark matter calculations, we have used the MIT bag model in which the total energy of the system is considered as the kinetic energy of the particles plus a bag constant. For the hadronic matter calculations, we have used the lowest order constrained variational formalism. Our calculations show that the results for the maximum gravitational mass of a hot neutron star with a quark core are substantially different from those of a neutron star without the quark core.

In this research, the ballistic behavior of the ceramic-reinforced aluminum matrix composite plates is investigated to provide an optimal design for protecting against 7.62 mm bullet at the speed of 800 m/s experimentally and numerically. The target materials are Al5083 alloy as the metal matrix and alumina ceramic balls as the reinforcement. To simulate a 3D numerical model, ABAQUS FE code has been *** validation the numerical model by experiments, the effect of ceramic ball weight percentage include 15%, 30% and 45% and the target thickness 20, 25 and 30 mm is considered on the ballistic results like the kinetic energy, residual velocity and depth of penetration. Finally, it was found that the specimen with 25 mm thickness and 30% alumina is optimum based on existing ballistic protection criteria.

Tauopathies are a group of neurological disorders,including Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia,which involve progressive neurodegeneration,cognitive deficits,and aberrant tau protein *** development of tauopathies cannot currently be stopped or slowed down by treatment *** the significant contribution of tau burden in primary tauopathies and the strong association between pathogenic tau accumulation and cognitive deficits,there has been a lot of interest in creating therapies that can alleviate tau pathology and render neuroprotective ***,small molecules,immunotherapies,and gene therapy have been used to reduce the pathological tau burden and prevent neurodegeneration in animal models of ***,the major pitfall of the current therapeutic approach is the difficulty of drugs and gene-targeting modalities to cross the blood-brain barrier and their unintended side *** this review,the current therapeutic strategies used for tauopathies including the use of oligonucleotide-based gene therapy approaches that have shown a promising result for the treatment of tauopathies and Alzheimer’s disease in preclinical animal models,have been discussed.

Central composite design for optimization and formulation of desulphurization of iron ore concentrate using atmospheric leaching process

Owing to the negative effects of sulphur in iron ore on steelmaking process and environment, a tank leaching process was performed in atmospheric conditions to remove the sulphur from the iron ore concentrate and simultaneously to transform sulphide minerals into useful by-products. To achieve desirable sulphur removal rate and efficiency, central composite design was adopted as a response surface methodology for the optimization and evaluation of the process. A full-quadratic polynomial equation between the sulphur removal and the studied parameters was established to assess the behaviour of sulphur removal as a function of the factors and to predict the results in various conditions. The optimum conditions were obtained based on the variance tests and response surface plots, from which the optimized ranges for each factor resulting in the best response （corresponding to the highest percentage of desulphurization） could be then achieved. The results show that most desirable conditions are atmospheric leaching in 1.39 mol/dm3 nitric acid and 0.88 mol/dm3 sulphuric acid for 47 h. The designed process under the optimized desulphurization conditions was applied to a real iron ore concentrate. More than 75% of the total sulphur was removed via the leaching process. In addition to the desulphurization, the conversion of sulphide-bearing minerals into useful by-products, extraction of valuable metals, and executing the process under atmospheric conditions are the other advantages of the proposed method.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the world,affecting about 30%of the world’s adult population(1,2).The disease ranges from simple steatosis(SS)to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)(3).The prevalence of NAFLD is higher in patients with cardio metabolic risk and cardiac metabolic conditions are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
