Islam-democracy compatibility or Islamic democratic discourse-the relation between Islamic socio-political concepts and institutions and positive features and notions of modern democracy-has gained an impetus from the final decades of 20th *** in Islam is strongly debated,defined and discussed by the diversity of voices ranging from those who deny a connection between Islam and democracy to those who argue that the Islamic system of government contains a number of‘concepts and values’which are present in modern *** this direction,this paper attempts to make an analysis of the views,arguments and observations of four most prominent modernist Muslim intellectuals-‘Muslim Democrats’-regarding Islam-democracy compatibility and *** views of scholars presented here include:Sadek Jawad Sulaiman,Louay ***,Radwan ***,and *** *** argues(among others)that more reflection,research,and(re)interpretation is required to reconcile the tenets of Islam with the modern notions of democracy,liberty,justice,equality,and human rights as the Islamic primary sources throw ample light and guidance on these concepts and values.

Islam-democracy discourse,a hotly debated topic and a burning issue,has highly intensified over the last few decades and throughout the world with several Muslim thinkers/intellectuals having taken strides to shape Muslim understanding of“Islamic democracy”.To offer a new direction and advance this discourse some steps further,this paper seeks to address this issue in the thought and writings,by way of a comparative study,of two prominent intellectuals of Iran:Abdulkarim Soroush(b.1945),who sees no contradiction between Islam and the freedoms inherent in democracy,and Hasan Yousuf Eshkevari(b.1949/50),who is at the forefront of articulating the relationship between Islam and *** essay argues that(i)the efforts of Soroush and Eshkevari,along with those of many other religious reformist intellectuals and political activists,have collectively given rise to a vibrant,intellectually sophisticated,and expansive discourse of Islamic reformism;(ii)although,theoretically,there is no doubt in the argument that Islam and democracy are indeed compatible(on many grounds),there is lack and scarcity of literature on the practical framework/implementation of this envisioned formula of“Islamic democracy”—a challenge still faced by Muslim political theorists especially in the 21st century.

Etiology and Management of Small Bowel Obstruction with Special Reference to Role of Laparoscopy—A Single Centre Experience

Background: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is the commonly diagnosed disease in the emergency department. The diagnosis and management of small bowel obstruction varies among institutions. The role of laparoscopy in the management of small bowel obstruction is debatable. Aim: To study the profile, clinical features and management options of patients of small bowel obstruction with special emphasis on role of laparoscopy. Material and Methods: 51 consecutive patients with documented small bowel obstruction admitted in our department were studied from June 2016 to December 2018. All the patients above 12 years of age with small bowel obstruction were included. The diagnosis of small bowel obstruction (SBO) was made in these cases by detailed history, clinical examination and investigations. All these patients were received and adequately resuscitated. Non-operative (conservative) treatment was confirmed to those who met the standard parameters for such treatment and early surgical treatment was carried out whenever indicated. The operative procedure done was laparoscopy or open depending on the clinical features and condition of patient. Results: In our study, 51 patients mean age was 44.7 years with 27 Males and 24 females. 28 (54.9%) patients of our study presented with continuous abdominal pain followed by colicky pain in 23 (45.1%) patients. 34 (66.7%) patients on admission gave history of effortless vomiting. Distension of abdomen was present in 30 (58.8%) patients and constipation was present in 40 (78.4%) of our studied patients. On CT scan interloop fluid was present in 23 (45.1%) patients while transition point was present in 31 (60.8%) patients. Adhesion obstruction was found to be most common cause of obstruction 27 (52.9%) patients, followed by malignancy in 8 (15.7). 25 (49.0%) patients were managed conservatively and 26 (51%) were operated. 11 (21.6%) patients underwent laparoscopic adhesiolysis and 15 (29.4%) underwent exploratory laparotomy. Synchronous Adenocarcinomas of the Jejunum and Sigmoid Colon—A Rare Case

Primary adenocarcinomas of the small bowel are rare. Because of their rarity, non-specific symptoms and diagnostic difficulty, small bowel tumors are often diagnosed and treated late in their course. The diagnostic difficulty is increased when these tumors arise in association with primary synchronous tumors of the colon. We present a case of a 17-year-old female who was evaluated for anemia and bleeding per rectum. Colonoscopy revealed multiple colonic polyps. Intraoperatively, she was surprisingly found to be having a synchronous jejunal growth apart from multiple colonic polyoid lesions. Total colectomy was performed along with resection of jejunal growth. Histopathology of colonic specimen revealed multiple polypoid projections with one polyp showing adenocarcinoma and rest severe dysplasia. Histopathology of jejunal growth revealed poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Very rarely, cases have been reported in literature, where the primary adenocarcinoma of the jejunum developed synchronously with colonic adenocarcinoma, and both treated surgically on the same occasion.

Farmers'participatory selection of new rice varieties to boost production under temperate agro-ecosystems

In mountain agriculture, early maturity, high grain yield and high biomass are generally considered as farmer preferred traits in rice crop in addition to a multiple set of traits collectively responsible for variety adoption or rejection. The varieties tested only on station evaluation trials without taking the data from the farmers＇ fields by not including farmers as partners for variety evaluation are the reasons of low adoption of varieties. In this regard, a participatory methodology was followed by conducting a number of participatory trials in the farmers＇ fields during 2012-2014 in six districts of Kashmir Valley, India. The mother trials in the farmers＇ fields showed that the test variety SKUA-408 consistently and significantly out yielded Jhelum and farmers＇ variety followed by Shalimar rice 3 （SR3）. The other released varieties like SR1 and SR2 could not perform nicely in the farmers＇ fields because of late maturity. After making the t-test comparison of baby trials （paired plots）, the mean yield superiority of test varieties SKUA-408, SR3, and SKUA-403 over farmers＇ variety during 2013 was around 23, 25, and 22％, respectively, whereas in 2014 the respective yield advantage was recorded as 16.3, 17.7, and 16.2％. In all districts, SKUA-408 and SR3 were significantly preferred by farmers （P〈0.05 or 0.01） in terms of pre-harvest traits namely, tillering ability and general phenotypic acceptability, early maturity and biomass and for post-harvest traits such as general cooking quality besides, the intention to grow the variety for next year. Adoption and dissemination of SKUA-408 began in 2014 from the farm-saved seed in the form of farmer to farmer seed exchange. Farmers are the end users of a variety so the decision by the farmers while judging the variety should be taken into consideration to make the varietal choice more effective for its widespread adoption.

BACKGROUND Connective tissue growth factor(CTGF)is a mediator of transforming growth factor-beta signaling and plays a key role in connective tissue remodeling,inflammatory processes and fibrosis in various illnesses including *** To investigate the role of CTGF in colorectal cancer(CRC)progression and to compare the CTGF expression with different clinicopathological *** Real-time polymerase chain reaction,immunohistochemistry and Western blotting was performed to evaluate the CTGF expression and the results were statistically analyzed against the clinicopathological variables of patient data using STATA software version *** CTGF expression levels in tumor specimens were significantly higher than their paired normal *** higher protein expression levels showed a significant association with smoking,staging,tumor grade,invasion depth,necrosis of tumor tissue,and both lymphovascular and perineural *** per the cox regression model and classification tree analysis,tumor-nodemetastasis stage and perineural invasion were important predictors for CTGF expression and prognosis of CRC *** analysis indicated that CTGF overexpression was associated with poorer overall and disease-free *** Expression of CTGF was increased in CRC and was linked with poor overall and disease-free survival of CRC *** findings support prior observations and thus CTGF may be a possible prognostic marker in CRC.
