Degradation of slopes due to shallow landslide and the subsequent erosional processes are a big challenge on the application of soil bioengineering techniques; that is the use of plants as main structural components of a slope protection and conservation system. An optimal application of soil bioengineering techniques should include not only the technical factor of plants as structural components but also the ecology of species and the plant adaptations to disturbances, which is crucial if a longterm successful slope restoration system is intended. Ferns are a dominant understory vegetation species in the forest of Japan, but its characteristics and influences on the recovery of shallow landslide scars have not been fully studied yet. This study aims to find out the ecological characteristics of fern species through the calculation of ecological indicators and the quantification of the morphological features of specimens growing on disturbed and non-disturbed forest slopes in Japan. Gleichenia japonica was found as the vegetation species with biggest ecological indicators on both slopes. The analysis of morphological characteristics of the specimens growing on both sites showed that the development of the specimens is focused in below-ground characteristics. The pull-out force of Gleichenia japonica root system as an indicator of ecological adaptation to a constraint environment and morphological characteristics quality is influenced by height and root length according to the principal component analysis. The eco-morphological characteristics of species can be used as an indicator of an optimal element in soil bioengineering establishment for slope conservation proposes. The long and fibrous root system could be placed on forest roads, steep or small slopes where space limitation is an issue for the establishment of bigger species and if the slope conditions allow it, it can control soil losses due to rainfall and provide stability.

AIM： Ghrelin is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, and it plays a role in stimulating the growth hormone secretion, food intake,body weight gain and gastric motility. Eradication of Helicobacterpylori （H pylon） was shown to be associated with increase of the body weight. On the other hand, Hpylori infection evokes the release of gastric IL-1β. The present study was designed to investigate the involvement of the gastric IL-1 signal in the ghrelin dynamics in Hpyloricolonized ***： Twelve-week-old female IL-l-receptor type 1-homozygous-knockout mice （IL-1R1^-/-） and their wild-type littermates （WT） were orally inoculated with H pylori （Hp group）, while other cohorts received oral inoculation of culture medium （Cont group）. Thirteen weeks after the inoculation, the mice were examined. The plasma and stomach ghrelin levels and the gastric preproghrelin mRNA were ***： Although the WT mice with Hpyloriinfection showed a significantly decreased body weight as compared with that of the animals without HpyloriinfecUon,Hpyloriinfection did not influence the body weight of the IL-1Rl-knockout （IL-1R1^-/-） mice. Mn（Ⅱ）, Co（Ⅱ）, Ni（Ⅱ）, Cu（Ⅱ）, Pd（Ⅱ） and Ru（Ⅲ） complexes of Schiff bases derived from the condensation of sulfaguanidine with 2,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde （HL1）, 2-hydroxy-l-naphthaldehyde （HL2） and salicylaldehyde （HL3） have been synthesized. The structures of the prepared metal complexes were proposed based on elemental analysis, molar conductance, thermal analysis （TGA, DSC and DTG）, magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic techniques （IR, UV-Vis, and ESR）. In all complexes, the ligand bonds to the metal ion through the azomethine nitrogen and a-hydroxy oxygen atoms. The structures of Pd（Ⅱ） complex 8 and Ru（Ⅲ） complex 9 were found to be polynuclear. Two kinds of stereochemical geometries; distorted tetrahedral and distorted square py- ramidal, have been realized for the Cu（Ⅱ） complexes based on the results of UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility and ESR spectra whereas octahedral geometry was predicted for Co（Ⅱ）, Mn（Ⅱ） and Ru（Ⅲ） complexes. Ni（Ⅱ） com- plexes were predicted to be square planar and tetrahedral and Pd（Ⅱ） complexes were found to be square planar. The antimicrobial activity of the ligands and their metal complexes was also investigated against the gram-positive bac- teria Staphylococcus aures and Bacillus subtilis and gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pesudomonas aeruginosa, by using the agar dilution method. Chloramphenicol was used as standard compound. The obtained data revealed that the metal complexes are more or less, active than the parent ligand and standard. The X-ray crys- tal structure of HL3 has been also reported.

Women with Fear of Childbirth Perceived Large Accumulated Labor Pain in Japan

Background: To improve negative birth experiences among women who experience intense labor pain during labor, it is important to examine the relationship between fear of childbirth immediately after vaginal delivery and the actual intensity of labor pain. However, previous studies have generally evaluated labor pain in a retrospective setting. Purpose: This study examined the relationship between fear of childbirth immediately after vaginal delivery and the actual labor pain intensity and accumulated labor pain intensity without pharmacological pain relief during labor in Japan. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted between July 2015 and April 2016. Forty-seven pregnant Japanese women were available for analysis. Fear of childbirth was measured by the Japanese version of the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (JW-DEQ) version B on the third day after vaginal delivery. Participants with scores of 85 or higher were categorized in the high JW-DEQ group, having severe fear of childbirth. Labor pain intensity was examined chronologically in real time with stepwise usage of two types of Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Accumulated labor pain intensity was calculated using the area under the curve (AUC). Results: Nine participants were in the high JW-DEQ group and eight of the nine were primiparae. Primiparae in the high JW-DEQ group experienced significantly longer duration and larger accumulated labor pain intensity between the onset of labor and 4 to 6 cm of cervical dilatation than those in the low JW-DEQ group (P = 0.024 and P = 0.021, respectively). Conclusions/Implications for Practice: The latent phase of labor was a key stage to improve fear of childbirth immediately after vaginal delivery without pharmacological pain relief among Japanese primiparae. Midwives should give assistance in the latent phase of labor by focusing on progressing labor smoothly and relieving labor pain to improve negative birth experiences.

Shear wave elastography in hepatitis C patients before and after antiviral therapy

AIMTo investigate shear wave (SW) propagation velocity in patients with untreated hepatitis C and patients with sustained virological response (SVR). METHODSA total of 136 hepatitis C patients [85 patients who had not received antiviral therapy (naïve group) and 51 patients who had received antiviral therapy and subsequently achieved SVR of at least 24 wk (SVR group)] and 58 healthy volunteers and outpatients without liver disease (control group) underwent evaluation of liver stiffness by SW elastography (SWE). Various parameters were evaluated in the chronic hepatitis C patients at the time of SWE. RESULTSSW propagation velocity (Vs) was 1.23 ± 0.14 m/s in the control group, 1.56 ± 0.32 m/s in the SVR group, and 1.69 ± 0.31 m/s in the naïve group. Significant differences were seen between the control group and the SVR group (P = 0.0000) and between the SVR group and the naïve group (P = 0.01417). All four fibrosis markers were higher in the naïve group than in the SVR group. In the naïve group, Vs was positively correlated with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (r = 0.5372), α feto protein (AFP) (r = 0.4389), type IV collagen (r = 0.5883), procollagen III peptide (P-III-P) (r = 0.4140), hyaluronic acid (r = 0.4551), and Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) (r = 0.6092) and negatively correlated with albumin (r = -0.4289), platelets (r = -0.5372), and prothrombin activity (r = -0.5235). On multiple regression analysis, Vs was the most strongly correlated with ALT (standard partial regression std β = 0.4039, P = 0.00000). In the SVR group, Vs was positively correlated with AFP (r = 0.6977), type IV collagen (r = 0.5228), P-III-P (r = 0.5812), hyaluronic acid (r = 0.5189), and M2BPGi (r = 0.6251) and negatively correlated with albumin (r = -0.4283), platelets (r = -0.4842), and prothrombin activity (r = -0.4771). Based on the strong chelating property of bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid (BPDS) with root chelate reductase activity is usually measured with a spectrophotometer using MES (2-morpholinoethanesulfonic acid) or HEPES (2-(4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl) ethanesulfonic acid) buffer in the dark because of high autoreduction rate of in the presence of light. However, the exclusion of light is inconvenient, especially when analyzing a large number of samples. The objective of this study was to develop a new method for determination of root reductase activity under normal laboratory conditions using a suitable buffer composition and concentration to eliminate the autoreduction of A modified method using a Tris (2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol) buffer at pH 7.5 instead of MES or HEPES buffer and a decreased FeEDTA (Fe ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) concentration of 50 μmol L-1 was developed. The autoreduction of using the Tris buffer was undetectable for temperatures at 4 and 28 °C and was also much lower than that using the other buffers even with sunlight during measurement of reduction. Furthermore, the differences in reductase activity among 5 plant species and 14 red clover cultivars (Trifolium pratense L.) could be easily detected with the modified method. The method developed in this study to measure root Fe chelate reductase activity was not only effective and reliable but also easily managed under normal laboratory light conditions.
