Nitric oxide and tumour necrosis factor alpha in the process of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma

AIMTo establish the role of nitric oxide (NO), ascorbic acid and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG).METHODsOur study included 120 patients who were referred for cataract surgery. All patients were divided into four groups according to clinical findings: XFG, early and late pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFs), and cataract (without pseudoexfoliation). serum and aqueous humour levels of the ascorbic acid, NO and TNF-α were measured. The concentrations of the ascorbic acid and NO were measured by an appropriate spectrophotometric method. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELIsA) was used to determine TNF-α *** humour concentration of ascorbic acid was significantly lower in patients with late XFs (0.61±0.11 mmol/L) and XFG (0.48±0.15 mmol/L) compared to patients with early XFs (0.9±0.15 mmol/L) and cataract (1.16±0.22 mmol/L), while there was no difference in serum concentration in all examined groups. Aqueous humour concentration of NO was significantly higher in patients with XFG (77.7±11.4 µmol/L) compared to patients with early XFs (50.27±9.34 µmol/L) and cataract (49.77±7.1 µmol/L), while serum concentration was increased in the early stage of XFs (73.26±8.29 µmol/L). Aqueous humour level of proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α was increased in patients with XFs (early 460.04±18.32 pg/mL; late 502.42±53.23 pg/mL) and XFG (510.34±43.07 pg/mL), while there was no difference in serum level in all examined groups of *** ascorbic acid and elevated NO and inflammation related cytokine TNF-α level in aqueous humour of the patients with developed XFG suggest that oxidative stress induces local inflammation.

“悲剧现实主义”由埃里希·奥尔巴赫提出,总结了他对“模仿”以及语文学的理解。奥尔巴赫主要使用悲剧现实主义来描述19世纪小说的智识要求,但这一概念所反映的正是19世纪现代性在法国大革命后对维系及探查世界的激进历史性的迫切需求。因此,奥尔巴赫在《模仿论》(1946)中强调了对日常生活的重点关注。奥尔巴赫于1941至1942年间在伊斯坦布尔的演说中对现实主义的阐释体现了悲剧现实主义早已主导他的思维:“悲剧”意味着现代现实主义包含希腊悲剧的睿智。同希腊悲剧一样,现代现实主义介入了世界的激进历史性,而民主的概念体系正是通过这一历史性得到商榷。鉴于此,本文聚焦奥尔巴赫在伊斯坦布尔的演说,探讨悲剧现实主义的三个层面。此三个层面奥尔巴赫皆有谈及,但未曾得到深层解释:第一,悲剧现实主义是一种用作解释历史的灾难结构,第二次世界大战即为证明;第二,19世纪英语小说乃一种迂回的现实主义;第三,影视在20世纪成为现实主义的载体。这三个层面勾勒出悲剧现实主义的隐性理论。这一理论不仅对《模仿论》进行了补充,而且指向具有普遍意义的现代性理论。

Epigastric hernias in children and the use of ultrasound in its diagnosis

Introduction There is a paucity of clinical data on pediatric epigastric hernias despite them accounting for up to 6%of all hernia repairs in *** aimed to provide additional data to supplement those 117 cases of a recent systematic review and to further clarify the role of ultrasound in diagnosing pediatric epigastric *** We retrospectively included all 60 patients treated for epigastric hernias in children in two tertiary pediatric surgical departments within 12 *** were tested via point-biserial correlation *** Epigastric hernias primarily affected preschool children with a median age of 39 *** vast majority of patients(88%)presented with swelling that was occasionally(30%)accompanied by *** defects could be found during clinical examination in 45%of patients with a median size of 5 mm(95%CI 3 to 10).smaller defects were less likely to be palpable(r=-0.44,95%CI-0.08 to-0.7,p=0.021).Likewise,ultrasound was used more frequently with smaller fascial defect sizes(r=-0.51,95%Cl-0.16 to-0.74,p=0.007).Laparoscopic repair was used in 11 patients(19%)and more often(4/11)in combination with another simultaneous procedure than open repair(11/48).Conclusions Epigastric hernias are primarily a condition of the preschool *** can be beneficial if the diagnosis cannot be made clinically;otherwise,it is abdicable if it does not change the management of the patient's epigastric *** repairs might be beneficial for children with multiple defects or simultaneous procedures.

Modeling Impact of Hurricane Damages on Income Distribution in the Coastal U.s.

This article examines the impact of catastrophic hurricane events on income distribution in hurricane states in the United states. Media claims have been made and the perception created that the most damaging impact of hurricanes is on the lowest income population in the affected states. If these claims are true, they may have serious implications for the insurance industry and government policy makers. We develop a panel data, fixed effects econometric model that includes hurricane-impacted states as cross-sections using annual data for a period of almost 100 years. The Gini coefficient is used as a measure of income inequality, and is a function of normalized hurricane economic damages, gross domestic product(GDP), a set of socioeconomic variables that serves as a control, time trend, and cross-sectional dummy *** indicate that for every 100 billion Us dollars in hurricane economic damages there is an increase in income inequality by 5.4 % as measured by Gini ***, sociodemographic, and economic variables are also significant. These include such variables as the political party controlling the U.s. senate, the proportion of nonwhite population by state, and GDP. Time trend is a positive and significant variable, suggesting an increase in income inequality over time. There are significant differences among the states included in the study. Our results demonstrate that different segments of the population are differently impacted by hurricanes and suggest how that differential impact could be considered in future government policies and business decisions, particularly those made by the insurance industry.

Prediction of interphase drag coefficient and bed expansion using a variational model for fluidization of small spherical particles

In this study,we applied the variational model to fluidization of small spherical *** experiments were carried out for spherical particles with 13 diameters between dp=0.13 and 5.00 *** propose a generalized form of our variational model to predict the superficial velocity U and interphase drag coefficientβby introducing an exponent n to describe the different dependences of the drag force Fd on fluid velocity for different particle sizes(different flow regimes).By comparing the predictions with the experimental results,we conclude that n=1 should be used for small particles(dps(dp>1 mm).This conclusion is generalized by proposing n=1 for particles with Rets with Ret>*** average mean absolute error was 5.49%in calculating superficial velocity for different bed voidages using the modified variational model for all of the particles *** calculated values ofβwere compared with values of literature models for particles with dpsolute error of the modified variational model was 8.02%in calculatingβfor different bed voidages for all of the particles examined.

The fixed point theory provides a sound basis for studying many problems in pure and applied sciences. In this paper, we use the notions of sequential compactness and completeness to prove Eldeisten-suzuki-type fixed point results for self-mappings in various abstract spaces. We apply our results to get a bounded solution of a functional equation arising in dynamic programming.
