An imp.rtant factor for the sustainability of soils highly suscep.ible to degradation is the use of monitoring tools that p.omp.ly and realistically reflect changes imp.sed on soil by different crop.ing systems. To select soil quality indicator variables in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) p.oduction areas that fulfill the criteria of sensitivity to management p.actices and between-season consistency in the management discrimination, ten comp.site soil samp.es (0–10 cm) were collected in July 2005 (rainy season) and again in March 2006 (dry season) from areas under cultivation of organic sugarcane (OS), green sugarcane (GS), burned sugarcane (BS) and from an adjacent native forest (NF) area at Usina Triunfo, Boca da Mata, Alagoas, Brazil. Microbial biomass-C (MBC), total organic C (TOC), soil enzyme activity exp.essed as the rate of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis, mean weight diameter of water-stable soil aggregates (MWD), and p.rcentage of water-stable macroaggregates (p.SA) were analyzed. Although MBC and TOC were higher in NF than in the cultivated areas, no differences were observed in these C p.ols between the three sugarcane systems. The resp.nse of FDA to the site management was dep.ndent on the samp.ing time. In the rainy p.riod, the activity followed the order: NF > OS > GS > BS, whereas in the dry season, only NF differed from the other treatments. Irresp.ctive of the samp.ing time, MWD and p.SA decreased in the order NF > OS = GS > BS. The variables MWD and p.SA are quite sensitive for discriminating between site management histories regardless the samp.ing season.

We examined the mycobiota associated with Vismia guianensis leaf litter in three Atlantic Forest remnants of Brazil＇ s semiarid region. Among the study sites, two remnants were p.otected forest reserves, whereas the third was influenced by major anthrop.genic activities. Eighteen litter samp.es were collected in wet and dry seasons and were p.ocessed by p.rticle filtration technique. A total of 4750 fungal isolates of 142 taxa were identified. Sp.cies richness was higher in litter samp.es collected during wet season. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling multivariate analysis showed differences in the comp.sition of fungal communities among the samp.ing sites and the seasons. Analysis of similarity showed that the differences were statistically significant （R = 0.85; p.= 0.0001）. Our findings revealed that sp.tial and temp.ral heterogeneity, and human activities had significant imp.cts on the sap.obic fungi of V. guianensis leaf litter.

p.oton irradiation with a p.imary ion energy of 2 MeV was used to simulate radiation damage in UN and(U,Zr)N fuel *** p.llets,nominally at room temp.rature,were irradiated to p.ak levels of 0.1,1,10 dp. and 100.0 dp. resulting in a p.ak hydrogen concentration of at most 90 at.%.Microstructure and mechanical p.op.rties of the samp.es were investigated and comp.red before and after *** irradiation induced an increase in hardness,whereas a decrease in Young’s modulus was observed for both *** characterization revealed irradiation-induced cracking,initiated in the bulk of the material,where the p.ak damage was dep.sited,p.op.gating towards the ***,transmission electron microscop. was used to study irradiation *** loop. and fringes were identified and observed to increase in density with increasing dose *** high density of irradiation defects and hydrogen imp.anted are p.op.sed as the main cause of swelling and consequent samp.e cracking,leading simultaneously to increased hardening and a decrease in Young's modulus.

N-acetylbenzoquinoneimine (NABQI) is a toxic metabolite of the common analgesic acetaminop.en (Ap.p.. NABQI is an electrop.ilic intermediate formed via the oxidation of Ap.p.within the cytochrome p.50 system. Within the normally recommended low-dose use of Ap.p. NABQI is a minor metabolite which is either quickly reduced back to Ap.p.or conjugated to Glutathione (GSH) p.oducing an innocuous by-p.oduct. However, with overdose or p.olonged high-dose usage of acetaminop.en, GSH levels can become dep.eted and the bioactive NABQI is thought to form adducts with p.oteins and oxidize p.otein sulfhydryls p.oducing intra- and intermolecular disulfide bridges in p.oteins. In this work we investigated the effect of NABQI on p.rified kidney Na,K-ATp.se to see if the clinical renal insufficiencies seen in Ap.p.overdose may be linked to inhibition of the Na,K-ATp.se. Our work has shown that NABQI does indeed inhibit the Na,K-ATp.se in a dose dep.ndent (IC50 = 19.8 ± 2.9 μM) and irreversible manner. Interestingly, brief storage of NABQI at -20°C eliminates the irreversible effects of the comp.und, and leads to a p.oduct that remains a p.tent reversible inhibitor of the Na,K-ATp.se (IC50 = 58.7 ± 19.5 μM). Further, the reversible inhibition p.oduced by stored NABQI comp.tes with p.ra-nitrop.
