The characteristic pattern of multiple colored layers in coastal stratified lakes in the process of separation from the White Sea

An unusual feature of the saline stratified lakes that were formed due to ongoing postglacial uplift on the White Sea coast is the presence of several differently colored thin layers in the zone with sharp gradients. Colored layers in five lakes at various stages of separation from the sea were investigated using optical microscopy, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, and photobiology. The upper greenish colored layer located in the aerobic strata of all lakes near the compensation depth of 1% light penetration contains green algae. In the chemocline, another layer, brightly green, red or pink, is dominated by mixotrophic flagellates. Despite the very low light intensities and the presence of H 2 S, active photosynthesis by these algae appears to be occurring, as indicated by high values of the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry, electron transport activity, photosynthetic activity of photosystem II, the fraction of active centers, and low values of heat dissipation. In the reduced zone of the chemocline, a dense green or brown suspension of anoxygenic phototrophs(green sulfur bacteria) is located.

Comparison of fatty acid contents and composition in major lipid classes of larvae and adults of mosquitoes （Diptera： Culicidae） from a steppe region

Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids （PUFA）. We studied fatty acid （FA） composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations （Diptera： Culicidae）, that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short-chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14：2n-6 and 14：3n-3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized （or retroconverted） by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n-3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred.

The Seasonal Variations of the Climatic Circulation of the Black Sea along the Axis of Divergence Zone

The spatial position, seasonal variability and intensity of the main flow and the cyclonic circulation of the Black Sea waters along the axis of the divergence were identified. Corresponding calculations were done with using of the dynamic method and based on the climate data set of temperature and salinity for the surface and intermediate layers of the Black Sea. The important role of spring floods on the rivers of the northern-western Black Sea in the development of the water circulation features was shown because this river＇s water and main Black Sea current interact with the periphery of the western and eastern cyclonic circulation. This process is dominated at the western part sea surface cyclone： in spring and at eastern, in summer and autumn. The flow rate and nature of seasonal migration cyclonic centers were estimated. The results of research are based on a relatively large scale （40＇ latitude and 60＇ longitude） averaging and we have identified the main area of water divergence. Small, localized areas of convergence and divergence of flow that are presented in the Black Sea were not included into the scope of our research.
