Enhanced photocatalytic performance of iron oxides@HTCC fabricated from zinc extraction tailings for methylene blue degradation:Investigation of the photocatalytic mechanism

Photocatalytic processes are efficient methods to solve water contamination problems,especially considering dyeing wastewater ***,high-efficiency photocatalysts are usually very expensive and have the risk of heavy metal ***,an iron oxides@hydrothermal carbonation carbon(HTCC)heterogeneous catalyst was prepared by our group through co-hydrothermal treatment of carbohydrates and zinc extraction tailings of converter ***,the catalytic performance of the iron oxides@HTCC was verified by a nonbiodegradable dye,methylene blue(MB),and the catalytic mechanism was deduced from theoretical simulations and spectroscopic *** iron oxides@HTCC showed an excellent synergy between photocatalysis and Fenton-like *** visible-light illumination,the iron oxides@HTCC could be excited to generate electrons and holes,reacting with H_(2)O_(2)to produce·OH radicals to oxidize and decompose organic *** removal efficiency of methylene blue over iron oxides@HTCC at 140 min was 2.86 times that of *** enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the advantages of iron oxides modification:(1)promoting the excitation induced by photons;(2)improving the charge ***,the iron oxides@HTCC showed high catalytic activity in a wide pH value range of 2.3-10.4,and the MB removal efficiency remained higher than 95% after the iron oxides@HTCC was recycled 4 *** magnetically recyclable iron oxides@HTCC may provide a solution for the treatment of wastewater from the textile industry.

Population-standardized genetic risk score： the SNP-based method of choice for inherited risk assessment of prostate cancer

Several different approaches are available to clinicians for determining prostate cancer （PCa） risk. The clinical validity of various PCa risk assessment methods utilizing single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） has been established; however, these SNP-based methods have not been compared. The objective of this study was to compare the three most commonly used SNP-based methods for PCa risk assessment. Participants were men （n = 1654） enrolled in a prospective study of PCa development. Genotypes of 59 PCa risk-associated SNPs were available in this cohort. Three methods of calculating SNP-based genetic risk scores （GRSs） were used for the evaluation of individual disease risk such as risk allele count （GRS-RAC）, weighted risk allele count （GRS-wRAC）, and population-standardized genetic risk score （GRS-PS）. Mean GRSs were calculated, and performances were compared using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve （AUC） and positive predictive value （PPV）. All SNP-based methods were found to be independently associated with PCa （all P 〈 0.05; hence their clinical validity）. The mean GRSs in men with or without PCa using GRS-RAC were 55.15 and 53.46, respectively, using GRS-wRAC were 7.42 and 6.97, respectively, and using GRS-PS were 1.12 and 0.84, respectively （all P 〈 0.05 for differences between patients with or without PCa）. All three SNP-based methods performed similarly in discriminating PCa from non-PCa based on AUC and in predicting PCa risk based on PPV （all P 〉 0.05 for comparisons between the three methods）, and all three SNP-based methods had a significantly higher AUC than family history （all P 〈 0.05）. Results from this study suggest that while the three most commonly used SNP-based methods performed similarly in discriminating PCa from non-PCa at the population level, GRS-PS is the method of choice for risk assessment at the individual level because its value （where 1.0 represents average population risk） can be easily interpreted regardless of

Genetic risk score （GRS） based on disease risk-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） is an informative tool that can be used to provide inherited information for specific diseases in addition to family history, However, it is still unknown whether only SNPs that are implicated in a specific racial group should be used when calculating GRSs. The objective of this study is to compare the performance of race-specific GRS and nonrace-specitic GRS for predicting prostate cancer （PCa） among 1338 patients underwent prostate biopsy in Shanghai, China. A race-specific GRS was calculated with seven PCa risk-associated SNPs implicated in East Asians （GRS7）, and a nonrace-specific GRS was calculated based on 76 PCa risk-associated SNPs implicated in at least one racial group （GRS76）. The means of GRS7 and GRS76 were 1.19 and 1.85, respectively, in the study population. Higher GRS7 and GRS76 were independent predictors for PCa and high-grade PCa in univariate and multivariate analyses. GRS7 had a better area under the receiver-operating curve （AUC） than GRS76 for discriminating PCa （0.602 vs 0.573） and high-grade PCa （0.603 vs 0.575） but did not reach statistical significance. GRS7 had a better （up to 13% at different cutoffs） positive predictive value （PPV） than GRS76. In conclusion, a race-specific GRS is more robust and has a better performance when predicting PCa in East Asian men than a GRS calculated using SNPs that are not shown to be associated with East Asians.

Displacement Current in Domain Walls of Bismuth Ferrite

In 1861,Maxwell conceived the idea of the displacement current,which then made laws of electrodynamics more complete and also resulted in the realization of devices exploiting such displacement ***,it is presently unknown if such displacement current can result in large intrinsic ac current in ferroic systems possessing domains,despite the flurry of recent activities that have been devoted to domains and their corresponding conductivity in these ***,we report firstprinciples-based atomistic simulations that predict that the transverse(polarization-related)displacement currents of 71°and 109°domains in the prototypical BiFeO_(3) multiferroic material are significant at the walls of such domains and in the GHz regime,and,in fact,result in currents that are at least of the same order of magnitude than previously reported dc currents(that are likely extrinsic in nature and due to electrons).Such large,localized and intrinsic ac currents are found to originate from low-frequency vibrations at the domain walls,and may open the door to the design of novel devices functioning in the GHz or THz range and in which currents would be confined within the domain wall.

Diphenyl （4-hydroxyphenyl） hexadecyl phosphonium bromide （POH） -modified montmorillonite （POHMMT） was used to prepare a novel TiC14/MgC12/POHMMT compound catalyst and exfoliated iPP/POHMMT nanocomposites were prepared by the in situ intercalative polymerization of propylene with the TiC14/MgC12/POHMMT compound catalyst. The POH surfactants don＇t change the catalytic characteristic of the Z-N catalyst and the obtained PP presents high isotacticity, normal molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. The WAXD, SAXS and TEM results demonstrate the highly exfoliated iPP/POHMMT nanocomposites were produced by the in situ polymerization with this novel catalyst, while the intercalated iPP/na＋MMT nanocomposites were produced with the TiC14/MgC12/na＋MMT compound catalyst. Through this approach, in situ propylene polymerization can actually take place between the silicate layers and lead not only to PP with high isotacticity and molecular weight, but also to highly exfoliated PP nanocomposites.

The Appearance of Ulva laetevirens(Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) in the Northeast Coast of the United States of America

Introduced species may outcompete or hybridize with native species, resulting in the loss of native biodiversity or even alteration of ecosystem processes. In this study, we reported an alien distromatic Ulva species, which was found in an embayment(Holly Pond) connected with Long Island Sound, USA. The morphological and anatomical observations in combination with molecular data were used for its identification to species. Anatomy of collected specimens showed that the cell shape in rhizoidal and basal regions was round and the marginal teeth along the basal and median region were not found. These characteristics were primarily identical to the diagnostic characteristics of Ulva laetevirens Areschoug(Chlorophyta). The plastid-encoding tufA and nucleus-encoding ITS1 were used for its molecular identification. Phylogenetic analysis for the tufA gene placed the specimens from Holly Pond in a well-supported clade along with published sequences of U. laetevirens identified early without any sequence divergence. In ITS tree, the sample also formed well-supported clades with the sequences of U. laetevirens with an estimated sequence divergence among the taxa in these clades as low as 1%. These findings confirmed the morpho-anatomical conclusion. native to Australia, this species was reported in several countries along the Mediterranean coast after the late of 1990 s. This is the first time that U. laetevirens is found in the northeast coast of United States and the second record for Atlantic North America.
