The performance of the wood-frame buildings after tornadoes has shown that the majority of the wind damage resulted from building envelope failure most typically due to the loss of the *** assess the performance and the reliability of low-rise wood-frame residential buildings with a focus on the roofs,fragility analysis can be used to estimate the probability of failure of a roof when constructed with specified nails and sheathing ***,this paper examines the fragility of specific types of nails,roof-to-wall(RW)connection details,and sheathing sizes based on the damaged roofs that were previously assessed in the Dunrobin area in Ottawa(Ontario)that was hit with an Enhanced Fujita(EF3)tornado on september 21,*** presented fragility analysis considers four scenarios,including different sheathing and nail *** loads,wind loads,and resistance on the sheathing panels were compiled and analyzed to determine the failure of the examined *** eight fragility models suggest that the safest roof sheathing(Rs)is the 1.22 m×1.22 m sheathing panel with 8 d nails,and the safest RW connections is achieved by using H2.5 hurricane clips.

Nutrient media and culture conditions have been defined for ovules 3 and 5 d after pollination and embryos of Gossypium herbaceum respectively. The technique was then used to produce interspecific hybrids between a cultivated Gossypium herbaceum and a wild species, G. stocksii. The hybrid plants were transferred to field and they exhibited most of the characters of the pollen parent i.e.G. stocksii.

Gastric cancer is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide, and is especially prevalent in Asian countries. With such high morbidity and mortality, early diagnosis is essential to achieving curative intent treatment and long term survival. Metabolomics is a new field of study that analyzes metabolites from biofluids and tissue samples. While metabolomics is still in its infancy, there are numerous potential applications in oncology, specifically early diagnosis. Only a few studies in the literature have examined metabolomics’ role in gastric cancer. Various fatty acid, carbohydrate, nucleic acid, and amino acid metabolites have been identified that distinguish gastric cancer from normal tissue and benign gastric disease. However, findings from these few studies are at times conflicting. Most studies demonstrate some relationship of cancer cells to the Warburg Effect, in that glycolysis predominates with conversion of pyruvate to lactate. This is one of the most consistent findings across the literature. There is less consistency in metabolomic signature with respect to nucleic acids, lipids and amino acids. In spite of this, metabolomics holds some promise for cancer surveillance but further studies are necessary to achieve consistency and validation before it can be widely employed as a clinical tool.

Enabling si photoanodes for efficient solar water oxidation would facilitate the development of solar fuel conversion, but it is challenging owing to si surface passivation via photo-induced corrosion in aqueous electrolytes. To overcome this challenge, most approaches have focused on improving the stability of si by coating dense and thin protective layers using high vacuum-based techniques such as atomic layer deposition. However, these procedures are costly, making scalability for practical applications difficult. Herein, we report a modified electroless deposition （ELD） method to uniformly deposit protective and catalytic Ni films on si wafers, resulting in efficient and stable si photoanodes for solar water oxidation. The optimized Ni/n-si photoanode achieves an onset potential of -1.09 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode and a saturation current density of -27.5 mA/cm^2 under AM 1.5 G illumination at pH 14. The ELD method is additionally capable of Ni deposition on a 4-inch n-si wafer, demonstrating the first 4-inch si photoanode. The solar water oxidation of the ELD-Ni/n-si photoanode can be further improved by surface texturing, built-in n-p junctions, or coupling with more efficient catalysts.

Fusarium head blight(FHB),also known as scab,is a devastating fungal disease of wheat that causes significant losses in grain yield and *** inheritance and cumbersome phenotyping make FHB resistance a challenging trait for direct selection in wheat *** selection to predict FHB resistance traits has shown promise in several ***,we used univariate and multivariate genomic prediction models to evaluate the prediction accuracy(PA)for different FHB traits using 476elite and advanced breeding lines developed by south Dakota state University hard winter wheat breeding *** breeding lines were assessed for FHB disease index(DIs),and percentage of Fusarium damaged kernels(FDK)in three FHB nurseries in 2018,2019,and 2020(TP18,TP19,and TP20)and were evaluated as training populations(TP)for genomic prediction(GP)of FHB *** observed a moderate PA using univariate models for DIs(0.39 and 0.35)and FDK(0.35 and 0.37)using TP19 and TP20,respectively,while slightly higher PA was observed(0.41 for DIs and 0.38 for FDK)when TP19 and TP20(TP19+20)were combined to leverage the advantage of a large training *** GP with multivariate approach including plant height and days to heading as covariates did not significantly improve PA for DIs and FDK over univariate models,PA for DON increased by 20%using DIs,FDK,DTH as covariates using multi-trait model in ***,we used TP19,TP20,and TP19+20 in forward prediction to calculate genomic-estimated breeding values(GEBVs)for DIs and FDK in preliminary breeding lines at an early stage of the breeding *** observed moderate PA of up to 0.59 for DIs and 0.54for FDK,demonstrating the promise in genomic prediction for FHB resistance in earlier stages using advanced *** results suggest GP for expensive FHB traits like DON and FDK can facilitate the rejection of highly susceptible materials at an early stage in a breeding program.

The house fly, Musca domestica, has been implicated as a vector of Campy- lobacter spp., a major cause of human disease. Little is known whether house flies serve as biological amplifying hosts or mechanical vectors for Campylobacterjejuni. We in- vestigated the period after C. jejuni had been ingested by house flies in which viable C. jejuni colonies could be isolated from whole bodies, the vomitus and the excreta of adult M. domestica and evaluated the activation of innate immune responses of house flies to ingested C. jejuni over time. C. jejuni could be cultured from infected houseflies soon after ingestion but no countable C. jejuni colonies were observed 〉 24 h postingestion. We detected viable C. jejuni in house fly vomitus and excreta up to 4 h after ingestion, but no viable bacteria were detected 〉 8 h. suppression subtractive hybridization identi- fied pathogen-induced gene expression in the intestinal tracts of adult house flies 4-24 h after ingesting C. jejuni. We measured the expression of immune regulatory （thor, JNK, and spheroide） and effector （cecropin, diptericin, attacin, defensing, and lysozyme） genes in C. jejuni-infected and -uninfected house flies using quantitative real time PCR. some house fly factor, or combination of factors, eliminates C. jejuni within 24 h postingestion. Because C. jejuni is not amplified within the body of the housefly, this insect likely serves as a mechanical vector rather than as a true biological, amplifying vector for C. jejuni, and adds to our understanding of insect pathogen interactions.

A major problem associated with marine spatial planning(MsP)involves the difficult and time-consuming practice of creating a scenario that encompasses complex datasets in near real time via the use of a simple spatial analysis ***,decision-makers require a reliable,user-friendly system to quickly and accessibly acquire accurate spatial planning *** development of national spatial data infrastructure(NsDI),which links the spatial data of a nation’s many diverse institutions,may pave the way for the development of a tool that can better utilize spatial datasets,such as a spatial decision support system(sDss).Thus,this project aimed to develop an sDss for MsP and to evaluate the feasibility of its integration within the NsDI *** seaweed culture was selected as an example due to its economic and technological acceptance by traditional ***,a multicriteria analysis was used to develop the ***,a feasibility evaluation of its implementation within the NsDI framework was conducted based on the Delphi *** results of the assessment indicated that the sDss can be incorporated into the NsDI framework by addressing the policy issue–one map policy,updating custodians’decree and data,and improve the standard and protocol.
