Backgro.nd: Fo.eign bo.y (FB) ingestio. by children is a co.mo. pro.lem wo.ldwide. Management may include endo.co.ic remo.al. This paper describes the clinical findings, sites and types o. FBs, and o.tco.es in children who.underwent endo.co.ic management o. ingested FBs at o.r institutio.. The published literature regarding the management o. FB ingestio. in children is also.reviewed. Metho.s: We retro.pectively reviewed the reco.ds o. all patients aged o.underwent endo.co.ic management o. gastro.ntestinal FBs between July 2002 and June 2012 (47 patients) and tracheo.ro.chial FBs between December 2010 and June 2012 (17 patients) at o.r institutio.. Patient characteristics, clinical findings, sites and types o. FBs, and o.tco.es were reco.ded. Results: The 47 patients with gastro.ntestinal FBs included 29 males and 18 females with a mean age o. 3.5 years. The mo.t co.mo. sympto.s were difficulty with swallo.ing and vo.iting in 16 patients (34%), chest pain in 10 (21%), and co.ghing and breathing difficulty in 7 (15%). The mo.t co.mo. FB site was the eso.hagus (36 patients). Mo.t gastro.ntestinal FBs were metallic, with co.ns being the mo.t co.mo.. Endo.co.ic remo.al was successful in 43 patients. The 17 patients with tracheo.ro.chial fo.eign bo.ies included 9 males and 8 females with a mean age o. 3.2 years. The mo.t co.mo. sympto.s were breathing difficulty in 12 patients (71%) and co.ghing in 3 (18%). The mo.t co.mo. tracheo.ro.chial FBs were nuts (10 patients). Bro.cho.co.ic remo.al was successful in all 17 patients. Co.clusio.s: Co.ns were the mo.t co.mo. gastro.ntestinal FBs, and nuts were the mo.t co.mo. tracheo.ro.chial FBs. Clinical presentatio.s were variable, and a high index o. suspicio. is necessary. Endo.co.ic remo.al is safe and effective, and early diagno.is and management result in favo.able o.tco.es.

Therefo.e, we studied the incidence o. intussusceptio. in the state o.Qatar. Metho.s: We retro.pectively reviewed cases o. intussusceptio. in children yo.nger than 14 years. Children were treated between 2002 and 2012 at a single ho.pital inQatar. We analyzed info.matio. acco.ding to.age, sex, clinical signs, diagno.tic- and treatment-related characteristics, and length o. stay. We calculated the natio.al incidence o. intussusceptio. using census data. Results: A to.al o. 106 children were diagno.ed and treated fo. intussusceptio. o.er 11 years. The male to.female ratio.o. intussusceptio. was 1.4:1. The mo.t co.mo. sympto. was bleeding per rectum (37%). o.e hundred andfo.r children with intussusceptio. underwent diagno.tic and therapeutic co.trast enema, and 31.7% o. patients underwent o.erative management. The length o. stay was lo.ger in patients who.underwent o.erative reductio. thanthat in tho.e who.did no.. Co.clusio.s: This is the first study to.estimate the incidence o. childho.d intussusceptio. prio. to.intro.uctio. o. ro.avirus vaccinatio. in Qatar. Aim: Hypo.padias is a relatively co.mo. male genital ano.aly that may be caused by ano.alies in maternal ho.mo.e levels and/o. blo.d gluco.e levels as well as nutritio.al deficiencies. Maternal o.esity, which increases the risk o. diabetes, may alter ho.mo.e levels, and may thereby be asso.iated with risk o. hypo.padias. This study was designed to.determine the impact o. these risk facto.s o. hypo.padias in bo.s bo.n at the largest tertiary ho.pital in Qatar. Metho.s: This po.ulatio.-based, case-co.tro. study used linked birth-ho.pital discharge data fro. Hamad General Ho.pital in Do.a, Qatar, fro. January 2007 to.December 2012. Bo.s with hypo.padias were identified, and risk facto.s were determined. Adjusted o.ds ratio. (ao.s) and 95% co.fidence intervals (CIs) fo. hypo.padias were estimated by multivariable lo.istic regressio. mo.els adjusted fo. maternal age, parity and bo.y mass index (BMI). Results: Seventy-three newbo.n male infants with hypo.padias and 100 witho.t the co.ditio., with birth weight abo.e 2500 g, were co.pared. Maternal o.esity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) was no. asso.iated with risk o. hypo.padias (ao. 1.07;95% 0.95 - 1.21), and no.trend in risk with increasing maternal BMI was o.served. Co.clusio.: Altho.gh the causes o. male genital malfo.matio. are multifacto.ial, the present data do.no. suppo.t the hypo.hesis that gestatio.al maternal o.esity is a cause o. hypo.padias in male infants.
