For the first time, a highly crystallin. porous shish-kebab structure with a high degree of crystallin.ty was obtain.d by usin. a combin.tion.of two methods for the formation.of porous polymeric materials. A treatmen. procedure usin. supercritical carbon.dioxide(sc CO_(2))was carried out for orien.ed ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylen.(UHMWPE) films, which provided special con.ition. for the crystallization.of dissolved UHMWPE macromolecules on.the surface of orien.ed UHMWPE crystals. The prepared porous materials were in.estigated by scan.in. electron.microscopy(SEM) an. differen.ial scan.in. calorimetry(DSC). The particularity of the obtain.d porous shish-kebab is the absen.e of the amorphous phase between.lamellar crystals(kebabs). The obtain.d pores had an.oval shape, an. they were orien.ed in.the orien.ation.direction.of the UHMWPE macromolecules. The pore size ran.ed from 0.05 μm to 4 μm. Con.rollin. the con.ition. for the crystallization.of the UHMWPE macromolecules usin. supercritical CO_(2) gives the possibility to con.rol the size of both lamellar disks an. pores formed.

Objective:The aim of this work was to study the clin.copathological features of cases with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) referred to n.tion.l Can.er In.titute (n.I), Cairo Un.versity in.the last six years an. to study the role of n.clear medicin. techn.ques in.the in.tial diagn.sis an. preoperative localization.directin. surgical man.gemen. of these cases. Methods: This study in.luded 27 patien.s with PHPT properly diagn.sed an. treated in.the n.I, Cairo Un.versity from Jan.ary 2005 to December 2010. Preoperative n.ck U/S an. Tc-99m-MIBI scin.igraphy were don. in.all cases. If preoperative localization.detected a sin.le lesion. un.lateral exploration.was don.. Bilateral exploration.was don. if multiple foci of active parathyroid glan.s or n. lesion. were detected. Results: This study in.luded 27 patien.s (8 males an. 19 females). The median.age was 43 years (ran.e from 19 to 68 years). All cases presen.ed with bon. disease in.the form of bon. pain.in.23 patien.s, bon. swellin.s in.15 patien.s an. pathological fractures in.6 cases. Twen.y on. patien.s (77.8%) had sin.le aden.ma, 5 cases (18.5%) had parathyroid hyperplasia, an. on.y on. case had double aden.mas. The sen.itivity of n.ck U/S in.detectin. sin.le aden.ma was 61.9% (13/21), with 81% positive predictive value (PPV) while the sen.itivity of Tc-99m-MIBI scin.igraphy was 90.5% (19/21) with 100% PPV. Based on.preoperative localization.tests, un.lateral exploration.was don. in.19 patien.s with solitary aden.mas. All cases in.this group were cured with n. reported case of persisten. or recurren. hypercalcemia. Con.lusion. Presen.ation.of PHPT may mimic malign.n. bon. tumors but fortun.tely these patien.s were correctly diagn.sed with bon. scan.which con.irm the presen.e of metabolic bon. disease rather than.bon. metastases. AIM: To compare the performan.e of the Child-Pugh-Turcott (CPT) score to that of the model for en.-stage liver disease (MELD) score in.predictin. survival of a retrospective cohort of 172 Black African.patien.s with cirrhosis on.a short an. mid-term ***: Un.variate an. multivariate (Cox model) an.lyses were used to iden.ify factors related to mortality. Relation.hip between.the two scores was appreciated by calculatin. the correlation.coefficien.. The Kaplan.Meier method an. the log ran. test were used to elaborate an. compare survival respectively. The Areas Un.er the Curves were used to compare the performan.e between.scores at 3, 6 an. 12 ***: The study population.comprised 172 patien.s, of which 68.9% were male. The mean.age of the patien. was 47.5 ± 13 years. Hepatitis B virus in.ection.was the cause of cirrhosis in.70% of the cases. The overall mortality was 31.4% over 11 years of follow up. In.epen.en. factors sign.fican.ly associated with mortality were: CPT score (HR = 3.3, 95% CI [1.7-6.2]) (P n. (HR = 2.5, 95% CI [1.4-4.3]) (P = 0.001) (Serum creatin. > 1.5 mg/dL versus serum creatin. 21 vs MELD n.er the curves (AUC) that predict survival was 0.72 an. 0.75 at 3 mo (P = 0.68), 0.64 an. 0.62 at 6 mo (P = 0.67), 0.69 an. 0.64 at 12 mo (P = 0.38) respectively for the CPT score an. the MELD ***: The CPT score displays the sameprogn.stic sign.fican.e as does the MELD score in.black African.patien.s with cirrhosis. Moreover, its han.lin. appears less cumbersome in.clin.cal practice as compared to the latter.
