Efficacy of Some Antibiotics in Curing Resistant <i>Escherichia coli</i>Infection

There is growing interest in re-evaluation of older antibiotics with the wide spread of pathogen resistance, especially gram negative bacteria, which impair treatment of some infections. In contrast various studies have reported that some antibiotics have efficacy in clearing resistant bacterial infections. On account of that it was interesting to evaluate the efficacy of erythromycin, chloramphenicol and/or tenoxicam in curing and/or relieving wound infection of highly resistant Escherichia coli and investigate the possible mechanisms beyond their antibacterial activity. This was achieved through evaluating highly resistant E. coli strains in vitro using agar dilution and in vivo rat models of E. coli infected wound and acute inflammation by carrageenin, where possible mechanisms were evaluated through measuring immunological mediators and histopathological examination. This study revealed that in vivo, erythromycin alone or in combination with tenoxicam significantly improved the healing of infected skin wounds with E. coli irresspective of resistancy in vitro. In addition to the improvement of immunological mediators involved in inflammatory reaction, oxidative stress and in cytokines expression as response to the bacterial infection in vivo. On the other hand chloramphenicol neither alone nor in combination with tenoxicam, achieved any significant effect. Tenoxicam didn’t show antimicrobial activity alone nor in combination with tested antibiotics in vitro, but it has shown synergestic activity in combination with tested antibiotics in vivo. Thus we concluded that immunomodulatory activity of erythromycin through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects was the possible mechanisms by which this antibiotic had healed infection with resistant E. coli in vivo, despite its resistancy to this antibiotic in vitro.

Influence of Charcoal Broiled Meat Consumption on the Liver Functions and Non-Enzymatic Antioxidants in Human Blood

The effect of ingesting charcoal-broiled beefburgers (CBB) on the liver functions and nonenzymatic antioxidant levels in human blood was examined in twenty-nine healthy individually males (mean age 21.65 ± 1.32 years, range 20.32 - 22.42 years), non-smokers and had no occupational exposure to PAHs, who consumed two charcoal grilled beefburger per day (mean weight 70 gmper each) at lunch time over 28 consecutive days. The mean daily intake of PAH during the consumption period was 3431 ng and the mean daily intake of PAH per kg body wt/day was 46 ng. Blood samples were collected from each subject 7, 14, 21 and 28 days before, during, and after the beefburgers consumption period. glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly higher in serum of subjects during CBB consumption period compared with those of before CBB consumption ones. All of the enzyme activities still increased upper the baseline levels, before CBB consumption period, by four week after charcoal broiled meat consumption ended. In contrary, the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants include albumin (ALB), glutathione in serum (GSH-S) and erythrocytes (GSH-E) were significantly lower in subjects during CBB consumption period compared with those of before CBB consumption ones. All of the non-enzymatic antioxidant levels decreased to near baseline levels, before CBB consumption period, by four week after charcoal broiled meat consumption ended. Results suggested that non-enzymatic antioxidants defense system of serum and erythrocytes was depressed and the erythrocytes as well as liver cells were exposed to oxidant stress due to oral exposure of PAH.

Buried water pipelines are vulnerable to fail or break due to excessive loading or ground *** evaluation of pipe performance and serviceability relies on the proper understanding of pipe-soil interactions(PSI).Analytical methods are important approaches to studying ***,a systematic and thorough literature review to analyze the existing research trends,technological achievements and future research opportunities is not *** work investigates analytical methods that analyze the stress and deformation of pipes in terms of cross-sectional,transverse and longitudinal PSI ***,scientometric analysis is performed to acquire relevant research works from online databases and analyze the existing data of influential authors,productive research sources and frequent key word occurrence in the fields of ***,a qualitative discussion is performed in the three categories of PSI:(1)cross-sectional,including ovalization and circumferential behaviours;(2)transverse,including seismic fault crossing,weak soil zones,ground settlement and pipe uplift;and(3)***,six research opportunities are discussed,including the role of friction in cross-sectional deformation,combined effects of bending and compression,choice of soil reaction models and calibration of key parameters,effect of pipe flaws,soil spatial variability and behaviours of curved *** study helps beginners familiarize themselves with PSI analytical methods and provides experienced researchers with ideas for future research directions.

New Polymer Syntheses Part 60: A Facile Synthetic Route to Polyamides Based on Thieno[2,3-b]thiophene and Their Corrosion Inhibition Behavior

Polyamides containing thieno[2,3-b]thiophene moiety were prepared via a simple polycondensation reaction of the diaminothieno[2,3-b]thiophene monomer la with different kinds of diacid chlorides （including oxalyl, adipoyl, sebacoyl, isophthaloyl, terephthaloyl, 4,4＇-azodibenzoyl, 3,3＇-azodibenzoyl, p-phenylene diacryloyl） in the presence of LiC1 and NMP as a solvent through lowtemperature solution polycondensation. The chemical structures of model compound and synthesized polyamides were confirmed by FTIR, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy （including 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR） and elemental analysis. In addition, the thermal stability, crystallinity structure and surface morphology of synthesized polyamides were characterized via thermogravametric analysis （TGA）, wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis （WAXD） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. Also, the corrosion inhibition behavior of selected examples ofpolyamides was investigated; the inhibitive effect of the investigated polymers for carbon steel in 1.0 mol＇L-1 HCI was studied using potentiodynamic polarization （PDP） and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS） methods. PDP results displayed that the polyamides containing thieno[2,3-b]thiophene moiety can be as mixed-type inhibitors. The inhibition efficiency （P, %） was found to be in the range from 67.13% to 96.01%. There is an increase in P by the synthesized polymers in comparison to the starting monomer. The adsorption of these polymers was found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Impact of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcomes

Objectives:The objective of this study is to assess the impact of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcome in relation to gestational ***:This retrospective study was conducted between May 2020 and July ***-five women infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and hospitalized at a quarantine hospital were ***-four women received prenatal care at the hospital until delivery,while 31 dropped out from the study due to COVID-19 recovery and discharge before ***:COVID-19 was found in 83%of the pregnant women after 20 weeks of *** most common symptoms were cough and *** complications included severe pneumonia and *** maternal mortality rate was 9.2%.Premature rupture of membranes and severe hypertension during labor affected nearly 9%of the pregnant women who completed prenatal care until delivery at the *** labor occurred at a rate of 38.2%.There were seven(20.8%)stillbirths and two cases of infant ***:Hospitalized pregnant women who have coronavirus infection,lymphopenia,and a high C-reactive protein level were at a higher risk of developing severe illness,which can lead to maternal and neonatal complications.

Corrosion Behaviour of Nickel in Chloroacetic Acids and its Inhibition

Anodic dissolution behaviour of Ni in mono-, di- and trichloroacetic acids has been investigated by measuring current densities of Ni electrode (versus SCE) at different potentials. Effects of acid concentration, pH, scan rate and additive inhibitor on the potential were studied and they revealed that there is a considerable shift of potential. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that the corrosion rate of Ni in chloroacetic acid solutions increases by increasing the previous factors. However, by adding inhibitor, it decreases.

Bitter gourd extract improves glucose homeostasis and lipid profile via enhancing insulin signaling in the liver and skeletal muscles of diabetic rats

Objective:To investigate the modulatory effects of bitter gourd extract on the insulin signaling pathway in the liver and skeletal muscle tissues of diabetic ***:The ethanolic extract of bitter gourd was prepared and its contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids were assayed.A neonatal streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model was established and the diabetic rats were assigned into different groups and were treated with different doses of bitter gourd extract(100,200,400,or 600 mg/kg)or with glibenclamide(0.1 mg/kg)for 30 *** blood glucose,insulin,and lipid profile were evaluated and the insulin signaling pathway in the liver and skeletal muscle of rats was *** correlations between homeostasis model assessment(HOMA)and the components of insulin signaling pathway were also ***:Different doses of bitter gourd extract significantly ameliorated fasting blood glucose level and HOMA index for insulin ***,bitter gourd extract increased serum insulin and improved disrupted serum lipid *** levels of insulin receptor substrate-1(IRS-1),p-insulin receptorβ(p-IR-β),protein kinase C(PKC),GLUT2,and GLUT4 were improved by treatment with bitter gourd *** best results were obtained with 400 mg/kg dose of the extract,the effect of which was equivalent to that of *** in the bitter gourd treated rats was negatively correlated with p-IR-β,IRS-1 and PKC in hepatic and skeletal *** was also negatively correlated with skeletal muscle ***:Bitter gourd extract improves glucose homeostasis and lipid profile in diabetic rats via enhancement of insulin secretion and ***,bitter gourd can be used as a potential pharmacological agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Assessment of EEG Changes in Neonatal Sepsis at Al-Zahraa University Hospital’s NIC Unit

Background: EEG is one of the most sensitive instrumental techniques for identifying sepsis-related neurological complications and a valuable tool in the ICU when clinical assessment is difficult. Aim of the Study: To detect EEG changes in neonates with evidence of sepsis. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective observational study for detecting EEG changes in cases of proven neonatal sepsis. This study was conducted at the NICU of Al Zahraa University Hospital for a period from October 2019 to March 2020. Our studied neonates were 50. This study included full-term newborns (37 to 42 weeks of gestational age) with clinical and laboratory evidence of sepsis (early and late onset). Neonatal birth asphyxia, jaundice, congenital malformations, suspected inborn error of metabolism and neonates electrolytes disturbances were excluded from the study. We record EEG changes during 20 min By an electroencephalogram (EEG) with abioelectric amplifier (Deltamed, Bourgogne), (Philips) Screen. Results: Among our studied neonates (neonates with evidence sepsis), 44.0% developed clinical seizures, 81% of the seizures group had abnormal EEG, 35.7% of No seizures group had abnormal EEG. Among our studied neonates, 56% had abnormal EEG EEG abnormalities were as follow, 26%/ had low voltage, 30% had spikes, 22% had sharp waves. Components Assignment Problem for Multi-Source Multi-Sink Flow Networks with Reliability and Budget Constraints

System reliability optimization problem of multi-source multi-sink flow network is defined by searching the optimal components that maximize the reliability and minimize the total assignment cost. Therefore, a genetic-based approach is proposed to solve the components assignment problem under budget constraint. The mathematical model of the optimization problem is presented and solved by the proposed genetic-based approach. The proposed approach is based on determining the optimal set of lower boundary points that maximize the system reliability such that the total assignment cost does not exceed the specified budget. Finally, to evaluate our approach, we applied it to various network examples with different numbers of available components;two-source two-sink network and three-source two-sink network.

Performance Evaluation and Effectiveness of the Reverberation Room

This research presents a thorough evaluation of the reverberation room at Acoustics Laboratory in National Institute of Standards(NIS)according to the related international *** evaluation aims at examining the room performance and exploring its effectiveness in the frequency range from 125 Hz to 10000 Hz according to the international standard *** room,which was designed and built several years ago,is an irregular rectangular shape free from *** volume is about 158.84 m^(3),which meets the requirement of the ISO 354 standard Lmaxely;however Schroder frequency is 400 *** of cut-off frequency and modal density showed adequate modes that give acceptable uniformity starting comfortably from frequency of 125 *** room has a reverberation time that is suitable for its size over the frequency range of *** room sound absorption surface area and its sound absorption coefficient satisfy the criteria given in ISO 3741 and ISO *** is an accepted diffuse sound field inside the room due to the standard deviation of measured sound level,which is less than 1.5 dB over all the frequency *** only exception was 125 Hz which may be due to a lack of diffusivity of the sound field at this *** evaluation proves that the NIS reverberation room is in full agreement with the international standards,which in turns qualifies the room to host measurements inside without concerns.
