Population Levels of Climate Change Fear in the United States

There is increasing evidence that climate change, like other natural disasters has the potential for significant human health impacts, including mental health. Fear as a psychological construct concerning climate change is not well understood. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted, targeting a demographically representative sample of Americans (n = 546) in terms of ethnicity, age, and gender. Survey questions included demographic information and global questions regarding self-rated anxiety and fear of climate change. Ordinal logistic models were created to determine which demographic factors were most predictive of climate change fear in the US population. Over half of the study sample (50.9%) indicated being moderately or very afraid of climate change. In the end, only three factors remained significant (p < 0.001) in the model;self-reported level of anxiety, political affiliation, and identifying and Hispanic/Latino. Climate change fear is still not understood, especially in terms of its impact on the mental health of the population in general, though prolonged fear can be an antecedent to other mental health disorders. This study had demonstrated that fear of climate change impacts over half of the U.S population. Level of fear differs significantly by demographic. This study has provided evidence that climate change fear impacts a significant proportion of the US population, prompting a need to investigate the potential acute and long-term impacts of this fear on the human psyche. The harms and benefits of the fear response to climate change should be explored as well as potential responses to fear due to climate change.

Bone mineral density reflects an athlete＇s cumulative history of energy availability, physical activity, and menstrual status, as well as nutritional and environmental factors. Although sports with high-impact loading are associated with higher bone mineral density than low-impact or non-impact sports, confounding variables are differences in the athletes＇ body size and sport-specific training. The purpose of this study was to determine if bone mineral density （BMD） and vitamin D status are different between two groups of female collegiate athletes who have comparable body size/weight requirements, but who engage in qualitatively different training regimens. Full body, spine and dual femur BMD was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry （DXA） in members of a university pep-dance team （n = 10） or cheer team （n = 9）, ages 18-22. Plasma vitamin D status was assessed by ELIZA. There was no significant difference between the groups for total body BMD （1.23 g/cm^2 dance vs 1.22 g/cm^2 cheer, P = 0.70）, spine BMD （1.39 g/cm^2 dance vs 1.36 g/cm^2 cheer, P = 0.72） or dual femur BMD （1.20 g/cm^2 dance vs 1.11 g/cm^2, P = 0.23）. Insufficient serum vitamin D status （20-32 ng/mL） was found in 74% of the athletes （27 ± 4 ng/mL, dance and 25 ± 8 ng/mL, cheer）. In addition, estimated daily vitamin D and calcium intakes were less than the RDA for both dancers and cheerleaders. Despite nutritional insufficiencies, BMD was not significantly different between the low-impact activity pep dance team and high-impact activity cheer team, suggesting that the type of physical activity was not as important for BMD in these athletes as participating in 20＋ hours a week of physical activity, which could have counteracted the negative effects of the nutrient insufficiencies on their bone health.

BACKGROUND Identification of germ-line mutations in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC) could impact on patient/*** To assess the referral pathways for genetic consultations in *** Electronic records of PDAC patients were reviewed retrospectively. Patients eligible for genetic consultation referral were identified following the European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatitis and Familial Pancreatic Cancer(EUROPAC)*** Four-hundred patients were eligible. Of 113 patients(28.3%) meeting EUROPAC criteria, 8.8% were referred for genetic opinion. Germ-line mutations were identified in 0.75% of the whole *** referrals and increased awareness may be able to overcome the low rate of successful genetic appointments.

Polycarbonate plastics containing bisphenol A (BPA) used to manufacture drinking water bottles. Kurdistan region in northern Iraq is a developed area with increased pollution from plastic bottles. Trace amounts of BPA have been detected in bottled water samples. The absorption of BPA was measured with HPLC using a vertical cultivation system with Bulbs of the Allium Cepa plant planted in these plastic bottles with monitored growth. Vertical cultivation was found to have a low level of BPA in the plant cells, making it a safe cultivation method under specific climate conditions. The mean concentration of BPA in vertical cultivation is 0.19 ug/ml (3.8 ng for a 20 uL injection), and the Limit of Quantification (LOQ) is 0.63 ug/ml (12.7 ng for 20 uL injection). While Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) shows that the concentrations are relatively low in water samples stored at room temperature compared to those exposed to direct sunlight (40°C) and water bottle samples stored at (-4°C), The correlation coefficients were found to be good (0.9992). SEM is used for plastic bottle samples stored at different temperatures. The images identify compound decay and explore the morphology of BPA in manufactured plastic materials.

BACKGROUND Cystatin C(CysC)is a cysteine protease inhibitor involved in proteins catabolism and plays an essential role in human vascular *** may also increase the risk of aortic stenosis(AS),but limited studies have reported on this *** study aimed to investigate if elevated serum CysC levels are associated with hemodynamically significant *** Serum CysC levels were estimated in 4,791 participants,samples were collected in 1990−*** study popula-tion was divided into quintile ***-up continued in 2011-2013 when participants returned for echocardiography *** of aortic valve disease(AVD)was ascertained by Doppler echocardiography through the end of *** defined in hemodynamic progression was assessed and classified as aortic sclerosis,mild stenosis,and moderate-to-severe *** Overall,a total of 4,791 participants(mean age:54.8±5.0 years,females:57.6%,blacks:8.2%)were included in this *** a follow-up of 21 years,we identified 736 cases(15.4%)of aortic sclerosis,194 cases(4.0%)of mild stenosis,and 42 cases(0.7%)of moderate-to-severe *** with serum CysC levels within individual quintile groups,the odds ratio(OR)was per standard deviation associated with an increased incidence of AVD(OR=1.15,95%CI:1.05−1.26,P=0.002).CONCLUSIONS In this large population-based study,an increased serum CysC levels is independently associated with the incidence of hemodynamically significant ***,this association appears not to extend to patients with extremely high serum CysC levels and necessitate further investigation.

从交通研究者和实践者的角度出发,以可持续交通这一概念为中心展开讨论。可持续交通宽泛地反映了可持续发展在交通领域的原则。随着可持续性这一概念的外延逐渐扩大,在它的定义、应用和价值取向上出现了不同观点。着重讨论可持续交通,以及如何理解和运用可持续交通,包括:1)将可持续性或者可持续发展作为一个整体的概念,包括关于可持续性的不同方法和定义之间的冲突;2)对可持续交通以及交通领域对其理解的探索;3)使用指标来实现可持续性的应用。然后识别了通往可持续交通之路的若干挑战,包括缺乏清晰定义、可持续性的固有冲突、可持续发展的跨领域本质、各种工作框架和指标体系、可持续发展的政治因素和交通领域实践中的不同观点。基于在该课题上的研究积累,总结解决这些问题的工作框架,提出因地制宜、注重结果、整体的方法来解决可持续交通中的挑战。
