Effects of Women’s Autonomy and Male Involvement on Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Service Utilization in Uttar Pradesh

Introduction: Effective utilization of reproductive and child health (RCH) services is important to reduce morbidity and mortality among mothers as well as children under-five. After International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), 1994 India has increasingly integrated male participation in women’s reproductive health to improve the women’s health care during pregnancy and child birth. This study examined effect of women’s autonomy and male involvement on RCH services utilization in Uttar Pradesh State of India. Methodology: State level data of Uttar Pradesh from National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3), India for currently married women and men aged 15 - 49 years was considered. The study was restricted to couples whose youngest child was born during the three years preceding the survey (N = 2685). Pearson chi-square test was used to determine the association of background characteristics with woman’s autonomy and male involvement in RCH utilization. Logistic regression was used to understand the effects of male involvement and women’s autonomy, using both computed indices after controlling for socio-economic and background characteristics of women and their husbands. Subsequently, the exercise was extended using individual component of both the indices. All findings were reported for 95% CI and p < 0.05. Results: Findings show that except religion, other socio-economic and demographic variables such as age of women, place of residence, number of living children, caste/tribe, women’s work status, education, wealth index, household structure and exposure to mass media, husband’s age, education, and occupation were statistically significant and associated with women’s autonomy and male involvement. Multivariate analysis indicated women’s autonomous decision making and support from their husbands (male involvement) significantly influenced their utilization of RCH services after controlling for all socio-economic and demographic variables. High current limits in chemical vapor deposited graphene spintronic devices

Understanding the stability and current-carrying capacity of graphene spintronic devices is key to their applications in graphene channel-based spin current sensors,spin-torque oscillators,and potential spin-integrated ***,despite the demonstrated high current densities in exfoliated graphene,the current-carrying capacity of large-scale chemical vapor deposited(CVD)graphene is not ***,the grainy nature of chemical vapor deposited graphene and the presence of a tunnel barrier in CVD graphene spin devices pose questions about the stability of high current electrical spin *** this work,we observe that despite structural imperfections,CVD graphene sustains remarkably highest currents of 5.2×10^(8)A/cm^(2),up to two orders higher than previously reported values in multilayer CVD graphene,with the capacity primarily dependent upon the sheet resistance of ***,we notice a reversible regime,up to which CVD graphene can be operated without degradation with operating currents as high as 108 A/cm^(2),significantly high and durable over long time of operation with spin valve signals observed up to such high current *** the same time,the tunnel barrier resistance can be modified by the application of high *** results demonstrate the robustness of large-scale CVD graphene and bring fresh insights for engineering and harnessing pure spin currents for innovative device applications.

On the Different Ways to Handle the Trend of Disease Risk in Genetic Association Tests

Genetic association studies usually apply the simple chi-square (χ2)-test for testing association between a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and a particular phenotype, assuming the genotypes and phenotypes are independent. So, the conventional χ2-test does not consider the increased risk of an individual carrying the increasing number of disease responsible allele (a particular genotype). But, the association tests should be performed with the consideration of this disease risk according to the mode of inheritance (additive, dominant, recessive). Practical demonstration of the two possible methods for considering such order or trends in contingency tables of genetic association studies using SNP genotype data is the purpose of this paper. One method is by pooling the genotypes, and the other is scoring the individual genotypes, based on the disease risk according to the inheritance pattern. The results show that the p-values obtained from both the methods are similar for the dominant and recessive models. The other important features of the methods were also extracted using the SNP genotype data for different inheritance patterns.

A Preliminary Outline of the Statistical Inference Process in Genetic Association Studies

The genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a powerful experimental design that is applied to detect disease susceptible genetic variants. The main goal of these studies is to provide a better understanding of the biology of disease, which further facilitates prevention or better treatment. A statistical inferential process is finally carried out in this study, where an association is usually observed between the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and the traits in a case-control setting. To detect the disease responsible loci correctly, the investigation of the statistical association should be carefully conducted along with the other necessary steps. This research provides an introductory guideline for conducting such statistical association tests for these studies using SNP genotype data.

An Introduction to Basic Statistical Models in Genetics

The use of the three genetic models viz. additive, dominant and recessive in Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a common and powerful approach to study the association between genetic variants and a trait (disease). The selection of these models depends on the pattern of inheritance and the scope of the study. GWAS typically focuses on single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and common human diseases in a case-control setup. In order to study this type of association between the risk genotype and the phenotype for a given inheritance pattern, the use of these genetic models helps to identify the disease risk appropriately. This study provides an overview of the existing genetic models (additive, dominant and recessive) and a practical demonstration of these model tests for the contingency tables of SNP genotypes and the disease phenotypes in a case-control setting.

An Application of Non–Linear Cobb-Douglas Production Function to Selected Manufacturing Industries in Bangladesh

Recently, businessmen as well as industrialists are very much concerned about the theory of firm in order to make correct decisions regarding what items, how much and how to produce them. All these decisions are directly related with the cost considerations and market situations where the firm is to be operated. In this regard, this paper should be helpful in suggesting the most suitable functional form of production process for the major manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. This paper considers Cobb-Douglas (C-D) production function with additive error and multiplicative error term. The main purpose of this paper is to select the appropriate Cobb-Douglas production model for measuring the production process of some selected manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. We use different model selection criteria to compare the Cobb-Douglas production function with additive error term to Cobb-Douglas production function with multiplicative error term. Finally, we estimate the parameters of the production function by using optimization subroutine.

In developing counties, efficiency of economic development has been determined by the analysis of industrial production. An examination of the characteristic of industrial sector is an essential aspect of growth studies. The growth of a country can be measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP is substantially affected by the industrial output. Industrial gross output is mainly a function of capital and labor input. If the effect of labor and capital input to output is at a satisfactory level in an industry or in a group of industries, then industrial investment will increase. As a result, the number of industries will increase, which will directly affect GDP and also will decrease the unemployment rate. This is why, industrial input-output relationship is so important for any industry as well as for the overall industrial sector of a country. To forecast the production of a firm is necessary to identify the appropriate model. MD. M. Hossain et al. [1] have shown that Cobb-Douglas production function with additive errors was more suitable for some selected manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. The main purpose of this paper is to detect the autocorrelation problem of Cobb-Douglas production model with additive errors. The result shows that autocorrelation is presented in some manufacturing industries. Finally, this paper removes the autocorrelation problem and re-estimates the parameters of the Cobb- Douglas production function with additive errors.
