Geochemical record for the depositional condition and petroleum potential of the Late Cretaceous Mamu Formation in the western flank of Anambra Basin, Nigeria

Carbonaceous shale exposures of the Late Cretaceous Mamu Formation along Ifon-Uzebba road in western arm(Benin Flank) of Anambra Basin, southwestern Nigeria, were analyzed for bulk organic geochemical, molecular biological and poly-aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) compositions to investigate the organic matter source, paleo-depositional condition, thermal maturity and petroleum potential of the unit. The bulk organic geochemistry was determined using Leco and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses while the biomarkers and PAH compositions were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer(GC-MS).The bulk organic geochemical parameters of the shale samples showed total organic carbon(TOC)(1.11-6.03 wt%), S2(0.49-11.73 mg HC/g Rock), HI(38-242 mg HC/g TOC) and Tmax(425-435 C) indicating good to excellent hydrocarbon source-rock. Typical HI-Tmax diagram revealed the shale samples mostly in the gas-prone Type Ⅲ kerogen region with few gas and oil-prone Type Ⅱ-Ⅲ kerogen. The investigated biomarkers(n-alkane, isoprenoid, terpane, hopane, sterane) and PAH(alkylnaphthalene, methylphenanthrene and dibenzothiophene) indicated that the carbonaceous shales contain mix contributions of terrestrial and marine organic matter inputs that were deposited in a deltaic to shallow marine settings and preserved under relatively anoxic to suboxic *** maturity parameters computed from Rock-Eval pyrolysis, biomarkers(hopane, sterane) and PAH(alkylnaphthalene, alkylphenanthrene, alkyldibenzothiophene) suggested that these carbonaceous shales in Anambra Basin have entered an early-mature stage for hydrocarbon generation. This is also supported by fluoranthene/pyrene(0.27-1.12), fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene)(0.21-0.53) ratios and calculated vitrinite reflectance values(0.49-0.63% Ro) indicative that these shales have mostly reached early oil window maturity, thereby having low hydrocarbon source potential.

The low solubility of ethyl p-methoxycinnamate(EPMC)inhibits its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract,impairing its pharmacological *** solubility of EPMC can be increased by utilizing a carrier in the type of mesoporous silica nanoparticles(MSN).In the present study,we aimed to confine EPMC under the nanoscale of MSN(MSN-EPMC)to increase the water solubility of *** was prepared using sodium silica as a precursor and Tween 80 and Span 80 as ***,500 mg MSN was dispersed into 2%w/v EPMC solution,stirred at 100 r/min for 24 h,and dried at 60℃.The results showed that the MSN formed had a particle size of 87.1305 nm,a surface area of 68.86 m;/g,a pore diameter of 20.45 nm,and a pore volume of 0.352 cm;/*** was successfully confined under the nanoscale of ***-EPMC had an amorphous structure,a loading capacity of 10.6%,and a loading efficiency of 18.18%.The solubility of MSN-EPMC was increased by 2.63 folds at 30 min compared with *** amorphous structure of MSN-EPMC was responsible for the enhancement of the water *** could be concluded that the confining of EPMC in MSN had the potential to increase the solubility of a water-soluble isolate of a plant.

This paper discusses telemedicine and the employment of advanced mobile technologies in smart healthcare delivery. It covers the technological advances in connected smart healthcare, including the roles of artificial intelligence, machine learning, 5G and IoT platforms, and other enabling technologies. It also presents the challenges and potential risks that could arise from delivering connected smart healthcare services. Healthcare delivery is witnessing revolutions engineered by the developments in mobile connectivity and the plethora of platforms, applications, sensors, devices, and equipment that go along with it. Human society is evolving fast in response to these technological developments, which are also pushing the connectivity-providing sector to create and adopt new waves of network technologies. Consequently, new communications technologies have been introduced into the healthcare system and many novel applications have been developed to make it easier for sharing data in various forms and volumes within health-related services. These applications have also made it possible for telemedicine to be effectively adopted. This paper provides an overview of some of the recent developments within the space of mobile connectivity and telemedicine.

Comparative Analysis of the Determinants of Residential Land Values

City development is a result of many factors, of which land value is one of the major determinants. The past urban economics studies have shown that land value is largely determined by location factors such as distance from Central Business District （CBD） ignoring the non-location factors like time of purchase and neighbourhood infrastructures. Therefore, this paper attempts to establish the relative importance of location and non-location factors in the determination of residential land value by positing Onitsha, Nigeria as a case study. Eight hundred and fifty residential housing units were selected and questionnaire administered to the landlords through multi-stage sampling technique. The stepwise regression analysis results showed that non-location factors, especially, time of land purchase, contribute more to the variation in residential land values. The paper suggests the revision of the classical economic theories to represent the conditions of urban areas in developing countries .

Background:Lassa fever is a zoonotic viral infection endemic to the West Africa *** is highly fatal during pregnancy and as such reports of neonatal onset Lassa fever infections are rare in scientific *** report a fatal case of Lassa fever in a 26-day-old neonate mimicking the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal *** presentation:The patient is a 26-day-old neonate who was admitted with a day history of fever,poor feeding,pre-auricular lymphadenopathy and sudden parental *** was initially evaluated for late onset neonatal *** later developed abnormal bleeding and multiple convulsions while on admission,prompting the need to evaluate for Lassa fever using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).He died 31 h into admission and RT-PCR result was positive for Lassa ***:Neonatal Lassa fever infection is highly fatal and can mimic neonatal *** index of suspicion is needed particularly for atypical presentations of neonatal sepsis in Lassa fever endemic areas.

Street Mapping of Ife Metropolis, Osun State, Nigeria

The importance of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System in map making cannot be overemphasized because of its ability to integrate spatial data with non-spatial data and also communicate the resulting information in a way that everyone would understand. Several works have taken advantage of the abilities of these technologies to produce street maps using High Resolution Images. The increase in development in Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, has brought about navigation challenge and associated difficulties. This work intends to produce a street map that will ease navigation within the study area and help in road network analysis, site suitability analysis etc. Aerial Photographs, captured in the year 2009 and GeoEye1 Satellite Image of 2011 were used to extract the road network of Ife Metropolis. The image was imported into ArcGIS environment, where the database was created having feature datasets such as roads and special features. To have all the elements in vector format, the image was digitized. The street names collected from the field work was inputted into the database and then subjected to cartographical processes. 512 Roads were captured within four classes of Road Network namely Express road (5), Secondary Road (25), Primary Roads (22) and Street Road (460). This field work revealed that a larger percentage of the roads were not paved, while most of the paved ones have deteriorated and the newly constructed ones were not documented. It also showed that some of the roads were not named according to the standard and some were not named at all. From this study, we recommend that the naming system should be standardized across the study area. It is also recommended that provision should be made for street map revision on a yearly basis so as to account for changes.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Exposure in Soils of Ihwrekreka Communities, Delta State, Nigeria

Crude oil pollution in the Niger Delta, perpetrated by both local communities and industrial actors, has brought about soil pollution with its consequent ecological, human health and food challenges. The purpose of this research was to examine the concentration and distribution of heavy metals in soil from communities contaminated by crude oil in Niger Delta, and to evaluate the potential health risks to residents from exposure to these contaminants. To achieve this, soil samples were collected from the Ihwrekreka community and analyzed for heavy metal content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The analytical results in mg/kg revealed a significant metals pollution level derived from the oil spill in the soil ranging from 4.85 - 17,078 (Cu), 1.01 - 16.1 (Cd), 0.22 - 36.8 (Cr), 8.28 - 40.9 (Ni), 7.51 - 6474 (Pb), and 8.84 - 12,851 (Zn) respectively. Most of the metals were above the permissible limits of World Health Organization, with Cu, Zn, and Pb as the most contaminating metals. Lead was found to be the main contributor to the hazard index (HI) values for both children and adults in the study area, with its concentration exceeding the permitted limits set by the WHO and the EC. The hazard index (HI) values of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Cr were significantly higher than 1. These findings suggest that the release of heavy metals from an oil-contaminated site may pose a risk to human health and the environment.

A Non Web–Based Rainfall Information System for South Western Nigeria

A non web based rainfall data base of the South Western Nigeria was designed with the objective of providing user friendly source of data for the region. The study used the rainfall data obtained from the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Ibadan and it covers from year 1985 to 2007. The study uses Microsoft Access (2003) for data base creation as well as Visual Basic 6.0 (VB 6.0) for interface creation. The program developed could dynamically accommodate regular and new user of the data and could be upgraded for regular update of the data. The results of the programme evaluation showed that the data obtained from the database and the manual ones are the same.

Pentazocine Abuse in Two Siblings with Sickle Cell Anaemia

Vaso-occlusive crisis is a common clinical manifestation in children with sickle cell anaemia, frequently warranting in-patient management with intravenous fluids, analgesics and occasionally anti-malaria and antibiotics. Pain is the principal symptom of vaso-occlusive crisis and it can affect any part of the body. Pentazocine is a well-known opioid analgesic, commonly used in the treatment of painful crisis in children affected by sickle cell anaemia. It was discovered in the 1950s and was initially thought to be addiction—proof, but this has been disproved over the years by reports of pentazocine dependence/addiction especially in patients living with chronic pain. There have been some case reports of pentazocine abuse/dependence among sickle cell disease patients in the literature, most of which are from Nigeria but none involved joint addiction by siblings. We therefore, report the case of two siblings, known sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) patients, referred to our emergency paediatric unit with history of recurrent painful crisis over a 10-month period leading to abuse of pentazocine. They were jointly managed successfully by the paediatric hematology and the pain and palliative units of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and helped to overcome their abuse and addiction.

Neurological Sequelae in Cranioencephalic Trauma Patients at the National Hospital in Zinder (Niger)

Introduction: Cranioencephalic trauma is a frequent reason for admission to emergency departments and is a source of mild to severe neuropsychological defects that will persist over time. Their management remains difficult. Objectives: To evaluate the sequelae presented by patients suffering from cranioencephalic trauma. Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted at the National Hospital of Zinder. It will include all patients admitted and hospitalised in the emergency, intensive care and neurosurgery departments of Zinder National Hospital for head injury over a period of 28 months from 1 January 2016 to 30 April 2018. Brain scan, X-ray were the imaging tests used. Results: Out of a total of 974 admissions, 367 were retained, i.e. 37.6%, with a male predominance (82.6%). The average age was 26.5 years. MVAs were represented in 89.7% of cases. Moderate CTE accounted for 64% of cases. Altered consciousness was reported in 295 patients (80.38% of cases). Brain scans were used in 76.7% of cases and skull X-rays in 4.2% of cases. Medical management was performed in all patients. Treatment was operative in 78 patients (21.25%). Recovery without immediate sequelae was found in 187 patients (50.9%). Persistent headache represented 47.7% of the late sequelae observed in the patients, epileptic seizures represented 16.8% of the late sequelae, neurological deficit represented 14.7%. Conclusion: Cranioencephalic trauma represents a major public health issue. Although their in-hospital management remains a challenge, post-hospital management related to the appearance of sequelae remains another.
