Seasonal snow cover is a key component of the global climate and hydrological system,it has drawn considerable attention under global warming conditions.Although several passive microwave(PMW)snow depth(SD)products have been developed since the 1970s,they inherit noticeable errors and uncertainties when representing spatial distributions and temporal changes of SD,especially in complex mountainous regions.In this paper,we developed afine-resolution SD retrieval model(FSDM)using machine learning to improve SD estimation quality for Northeast China and produced a long-term,fine-resolution,daily SD dataset.The accuracies of the FSDM dataset were evaluated against in-situ SD data along with existing SD products.The results showed the FSDM dataset provided satisfactory inversion accuracy in spatiotemporal evaluation,with the root-mean-square error(RMSE),bias,and correlation coefficient(R)of 7.10 cm,-0.13 cm,and 0.60.Additionally,we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of SD in Northeast China and found that snow cover was mainly distributed in the Greater Khingan Range,Lesser Khingan Mountains,and Changbai Mountain regions.The SD exhibited high-low distribution patterns with the increased latitude.The annual mean SD slightly increased at the rate of 0.029 cm/year during 1987-2018.

The sensitivity difference between the glans penis and penile shaft in primary premature ejaculation

The penis is a vital organ of perception that transmits perceived signals to ejaculation-related centers.The penis consists of the glans penis and penile shaft,which differ considerably in both histology and innervation.This paper aims to investigate whether the glans penis or the penile shaft is the main source of sensory signals from the penis and whether penile hypersensitivity affects the whole organ or only part of it.The thresholds,latencies,and amplitudes of somatosensory evoked potentials(SSEPs)were recorded in 290 individuals with primary premature ejaculation using the glans penis and penile shaft as the sensory areas.The thresholds,latencies,and amplitudes of SSEPs from the glans penis and penile shaft in patients were significantly different(all P<0.0001).The latency of the glans penis or penile shaft was shorter than average(indicating hypersensitivity)in 141(48.6%)cases,of which 50(35.5%)cases were sensitive in both the glans penis and penile shaft,14(9.9%)cases were sensitive in the glans penis only,and 77(54.6%)cases were sensitive in the penile shaft only(P<0.0001).There are statistical differences in the signals perceived through the glans penis and the penile shaft.Penile hypersensitivity does not necessarily mean that the whole penis is hypersensitive.We classify penile hypersensitivity into three categories,namely,glans penis,penile shaft,and whole-penis hypersensitivity,and we propose the new concept of penile hypersensitive zone.

Development of amphibious biomimetic robots

Amphibious robots are becoming increasingly important for civilian,scientific,and environmental missions.They are widely used in disaster rescue,ecosystem monitoring,and entertainment.However,some have two different locomotion systems that need to be changed manually to fulfill both swimming in the water and moving on land,which may reduce their efficiency and reliability.Applying bioinspiration and biomimetics,many recently developed amphibious robots can undertake various tasks in complex amphibious environments with high mobility,flexibility,and energy efficiency.This review overviews the latest developments in amphibious robots,emphasizing biomimetic design concepts,backbone driving mechanisms,and typical applications.The performance indices of amphibious robots mimicking 13 different natural sources are compared,based on 10 different propulsion principles/modes,travel speed,working efficiency,maneuverability,and stability.Finally,the current challenges and perspectives of amphibious bio-inspired robots are discussed.This article summarizes the current types of amphibious robots and their movement and behavior solutions.The design concepts and operating mechanisms of amphibious robots reviewed here can be readily applied to other robotic studies.

Comparative profiling of immune genes improves the prognoses of lower grade gliomas

Objective:Lower grade gliomas(LGGs),classified as World Health Organization(WHO)grade II and grade III gliomas,comprise a heterogeneous group with a median survival time ranging from 4–13 years.Accurate prediction of the survival times of LGGs remains a major challenge in clinical practice.Methods:We reviewed the expression data of 865 LGG patients from 5 transcriptomics cohorts.The comparative profile of immune genes was analyzed for signature identification and validation.In-house RNAseq and microarray data from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas(CGGA)dataset were used as training and internal validation cohorts,respectively.The samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)and GSE16011 cohorts were used as external validation cohorts,and the real-time PCR of frozen LGG tissue samples(n=36)were used for clinical validation.Results:A total of 2,214 immune genes were subjected to pairwise comparison to generate 2,449,791 immune-related gene pairs(IGPs).A total of 402 IGPs were identified with prognostic values for LGGs.The HOXA9-related and CRH-related scores facilitated identification of patients with different prognoses.An immune signature based on 10 IGPs was constructed to stratify patients into low and high risk groups,exhibiting different clinical outcomes.A nomogram,combining immune signature,1p/19q status,and tumor grade,was able to predict the overall survival(OS)with c-indices of 0.85,0.80,0.80,0.79,and 0.75 in the training,internal validation,external validation,and tissue sample cohorts,respectively.Conclusions:This study was the first to report a comparative profiling of immune genes in large LGG cohorts.A promising individualized immune signature was developed to estimate the survival time for LGG patients.

Role of the rhizosphere of a flooding-tolerant herb in promoting mercury methylation in water-level fluctuation zones

The water-level fluctuation zone(WLFZ) has been considered as a hotspot for mercury(Hg) methylation. Flooding-tolerant herbs are gradually acclimated to this water-land ecotone, tending to form substantial root systems for improving erosion resistance. Accompanying rhizosphere microzone plays crucial but unclear roles in methylmercury(Me Hg) formation in the WLFZ. Thus, we conducted this study in the WLFZ of the Three Gorges Reservoir, to explore effects of the rhizosphere of a dominant flooding-tolerant herb(bermudagrass) on Me Hg production. The elevated Hg and Me Hg in rhizosphere soils suggest that the rhizosphere environment provides favorable conditions for Hg accumulation and methylation. The increased bioavailable Hg and microbial activity in the rhizosphere probably serve as important factors driving Me Hg formation in the presence of bermudagrass. Simultaneously, the rhizosphere environments changed the richness, diversity, and distribution of hgc A-containing microorganisms. Here, a typical ironreducing bacterium( Geobacteraceae) has been screened, however, the majority of hgc A genes detected in rhizosphere, near-, and non-rhizosphere soils of the WLFZ were unclassified. Collectively, these results provide new insights into the elevated Me Hg production as related to microbial processes in the rhizosphere of perennial herbs in the WLFZ, with general implications for Hg cycling in other ecosystems with water-level fluctuations.

Orbiting Optimization Model for Tracking Voltage Security Region Boundary in Bulk Power Grids

A voltage security region(VSR)is a powerful tool for monitoring the voltage security in bulk power grids with high penetration of renewables.It can prevent cascading failures in wind power integration areas caused by serious over or low voltage problems.The bottlenecks of a VSR for practical applications are computational efficiency and accuracy.To bridge these gaps,a general optimization model for tracking a voltage security region boundary(VSRB)in bulk power grids is developed in this paper in accordance with the topological characteristics of the VSRB.First,the initial VSRB point on the VSRB is examined with the traditional OPF by using the base case parameters as initial values.Then,the rest of the VSRB points on the VSRB are tracked one after another,with the proposed optimization model,by using the parameters of the tracked VSRB point as the initial value to explore its adjacent VSRB point.The proposed approach can significantly improve the computational efficiency of the VSRB tracking over the existing algorithms,and case studies,in the WECC 9-bus and the Polish 2736-bus test systems,demonstrate the high accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach on exploring the VSRB.

Blood index panel for gastric cancer detection

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is a common malignant tumor.Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer.AIM To develop a blood index panel that may improve the diagnostic value for discriminating gastric cancer and gastric polyps.METHODS Thirteen tumor-related detection indices,38 clinical biochemical indices and 10 cytokine indices were examined in 139 gastric cancer patients and 40 gastric polyp patients to build the model.An additional 68 gastric cancer patients and 22 gastric polyp patients were enrolled for validation.After area under the curve evaluation and univariate and multivariate analyses.RESULTS Five tumor-related detection indices,12 clinical biochemical indices and 1 cytokine index showed significant differences between the gastric cancer and gastric polyp groups.Carbohydrate antigen(CA)724,phosphorus(P)and ischemia-modified albumin(IMA)were included in the blood index panel,and the area under the curve(AUC)of the index panel was 0.829(0.754,0.905).After validation,the AUC was 0.811(0.700,0.923).Compared to the conventional index CA724,the blood index panel showed significantly increased diagnostic value.CONCLUSION We developed an index model that included CA724,P and IMA to discriminate the gastric cancer and gastric polyp groups,which may be a potential diagnostic method for clinical practice.

Reaction characteristics investigation of CeO_(2)-enhanced CaSO_(4) oxygen carrier with lignite

Calcium sulfate(CaSO_(4))has been verified as a promising oxygen carrier(OC)in the chemical looping combustion(CLC)for its high oxygen capacity,abundant reserve and low cost,but its low reactivity and deleterious sulfur species emission from the side reactions of CaSO_(4) should be well considered for its wide application in CLC.In order to promote the reactivity of CaSO_(4) and increase its potential to inhibit the gaseous sulfur emission,a CeO_(2)-enhanced CaSO_(4) OC mixed OC of core–shell structure was prepared using the combined template synthesis method.Reaction characteristics of the prepared CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) mixed OC with a typical lignite was first conducted and systematically investigated,and an improved reactivity of the prepared CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) mixed OC was demonstrated than its single component CaSO_(4) or CeO_(2) due to the fast transfer and exchange of oxygen from the CaSO_(4) substrate to coal via the doped CeO_(2).Furthermore,the solid products formed from the mixed CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) OC with the selected coal were collected and analyzed.Especially,evolution and redistribution of the sulfur species of different forms were focused.At the latter reaction stage of YN reaction with the CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) mixed OC,the SO_(2) emitted from the side reactions of CaSO_(4) was greatly diminished and the doped CeO_(2) was proven effective to directionally fix the SO_(2) released to turn into different solid sulfur compounds,which were determined as Ce_(2)O_(2)S,Ce_(2)S_(3) and Ce_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)·5H_(2)O and formed through the different pathways.In addition,good regeneration of the reduced CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) mixed OC could be reached in spite of the unavoidable interaction between the included minerals in coal and the reduced mixed OC.Overall,the combined template method-made CaSO_(4)-CeO_(2) mixed OC reported herein was not only endowed with enhanced reactivity for coal conversion,but also owned the potential to directionally fix the gaseous sulfur emission,which is quite applicable as OC for simultaneous decarb

Dear Editor,Monkeypox virus(MPXV),an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus with 190 open-reading frames and a genome length of about 200 kb,belongs to the genus Orthomyxovirus(OPXV;subfamily Chordopoxvirinae,family Poxviridae),which causes a disease with symptoms similar to,but less severe than,smallpox.MPXV is subdivided into two clades:clade I for the former Congo Basin clade and clade II for the former West African,and the clade I is more pathogenic.The clade II consists two subclades,clade IIa and clade IIb,with the latter referring primarily to the group of variants largely circulating in the 2022 global outbreak(ICTV,2022;Bunge et al.,2022;Mauldin et al.,2022).

Solution to Coordination of Transmission and Distribution for Renewable Energy Integration into Power Grids:An Integrated Flexibility Market

Nowadays,transmission system operators(TSOs)encounter the challenges of securely operating power grids with high penetration of renewables.In this context,more flexibility is needed than ever to maintain system reliability.With rapid development of coordinated transmission and distribution technology recently,active distribution networks(ADNs)which have abundant flexible resources,have the potential to provide flexibility to the TSO.Hence,an integrated transmission-distribution flexibility market is proposed in this paper.In the proposed framework,the energy market is first cleared to obtain baseline generation schedules.Then the baseline generation schedules are treated as inputs to the flexibility market.Furthermore,the integrated flexibility market is cleared to facilitate flexibility trading between transmission and distribution networks.To preserve the data privacy of different market participants,an alternating direction method of multipliers(ADMM)based method is utilized to clear the markets in a distributed manner.In the energy market and flexibility market-clearing model,transmission network market clearing models are linear programming(LP)models,and distribution network market clearing models are second order cone programming(SOCP)models.Through the proposed method,only limited information is exchanged between TSO and DSOs.Case studies are conducted on a revised IEEE 30-bus transmission network with two 33-node ADNs.Numerical results demonstrate the proposed flexibility market framework can enhance competitiveness of generation companies in the transmission network and distributed generators(DGs)in the ADNs.Moreover,flexibility purchasing cost is reduced by 17.7%compared to traditional flexibility supplied by generators according to the case study results,and ADNs can gain additional flexibility profit by providing flexibility.
