Associations of daily sedentary behavior,physical activity,and sleep with irritable bowel syndrome:A prospective analysis of 362,193 participants

Background:Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)substantially affects quality of life and requires early prevention.This study aimed to elucidate the relationships between IBS and daily behaviors,including sedentary behavior(SB),physical activity(PA),and sleep.In particular,it seeks to identify healthy behaviors to reduce IBS risk,which previous studies have rarely addressed.Methods:Daily behaviors were retrieved from self-reported data of 362,193 eligible UK Biobank participants.Incident cases were determined by self-report or health care data according to RomeⅣcriteria.Results:A total of 345,388 participants were IBS-free at baseline,during a median follow-up of 8.45 years,19,885 incident IBS cases were recorded.When examined individually,SB and shorter(≤7 h/day)or longer(>7 h/day)sleep duration were each positively associated with increased IBS risk,and PA was associated with lower IBS risk.The isotemporal substitution model suggested that replacing SB with other activities could provide further protective effects against IBS risk.Among people sleeping≤7 h/day,replacing 1 h of SB with equivalent light PA,vigorous PA,or sleep was associated with 8.1%(95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.901-0.937),5.8%(95%CI:0.896-0.991),and 9.2%(95%CI:0.885-0.932)reduced IBS risk,respectively.For people sleeping>7 h/day,light and vigorous PA were associated with a 4.8%(95%CI:0.926-0.978)and a 12.0%(95%CI:0.815-0.949)lower IBS risk,respectively.These benefits were mostly independent of genetic risk for IBS.Conclusion:SB and unhealthy sleep duration are risk factors for IBS.A promising way to mitigate IBS risk for individuals sleeping≤7 h/day and for those sleeping>7 h/day appears to be by replacing SB with adequate sleep or vigorous PA,respectively,regardless of the genetic predisposition of IBS.

China's Rural Industrialization and Agricultural Mechanization

Rural industrialization provides nonfarm employment opportunities and financial support for farmers and may be a non-negligible cause of agricultural mechanization in China.However,there is a lack of empirical studies on this topic due to challenges in obtaining data and identifying causal relationships.In this paper,we use multiple data sources and construct an instrumental variable based on the number of handicraft production cooperatives in 1957 to test empirically the causal effect of rural industrialization on agricultural mechanization.The results show that rural industrialization contributes significantly and robustly to agricultural mechanization.A 10 percent increase in the average number of industrial enterprises per township was associated with a 1.05 percent increase in the agricultural machinery power per unit area of arable land.Both the demand effect and income effect played crucial roles in the interaction between these two phenomena.

Changes of DOM and its correlation with internal nutrient release during cyanobacterial growth and decline in Lake Chaohu, China

The seasonal changes in dissolved organic matter(DOM),and its correlation with the release of internal nutrients during the annual cycle of cyanobacteria in the eutrophic Lake Chaohu,China,were investigated from four sampling periods between November 2020 and July 2021.The DOM fluorescence components were identified as protein-like C1,microbial humic-like C2,and terrestrial humic-like C3.The highest total fluorescence intensity(FT)of DOM in sediments during the incubation stage is due to the decomposition and degradation of cyanobacteria remains.The lowest humification of DOM and the highest proportion of C1 in waters during the initial cyanobacterial growth indicate that fresh algae are the main source.The highest molecular weight of DOM and FT of the C2 in sediments during cyanobacterial outbreaks indicate the concurrent deposition of undegraded cyanobacterial remains and microbial degradation.The components of DOM are affected mainly by the dissolved total phosphorus in waters,while the temperature drives the annual cycle of cyanobacteria.The decreasing C1 in sediments and increasing nutrients in waters from the cyanobacterial incubation to outbreak indicate that mineralization of algal organic matter contributes importantly to the release of internal nutrients,with the strongest release of phosphorus observed during the early growth of cyanobacteria.The humic-like C2 and C3 components could also affect the dynamics of internal phosphorus through the formation of organic colloids and organic–inorganic ligands.The results show that the degradation of DOM leads to nutrients release and thus supports the continuous growth of cyanobacteria in eutrophic Lake Chaohu.

On the leader-following exponential consensus of discrete-time linear multi-agent systems over jointly connected switching networks

The leader-following asymptotic consensus problem for general discrete-time linear multi-agent systems over jointly con-nected switching networks was solved about a decade ago.Recently,the leader-following exponential consensus was further established using the so-called Krasovskii-LaSalle theorem for a class of discrete-time linear switched systems.But this method involves some advanced concepts such as the weak zero-state detectability of some limiting system.In this paper,we offer a simpler solution to the leader-following exponential consensus problem for general discrete-time linear multi-agent systems over jointly connected switching networks.After converting the solvability of the problem to the establishment of the exponential stability for a class of discrete-time linear switched systems,we first show that this class of linear switched systems is uniformly completely observable.Then,we further conclude that the uniform complete observability for this class of linear switched systems implies the exponential stability for the same class of linear switched systems,thus leading to the solution of the leader-following exponential consensus problem.Moreover,our approach also gives rise to an explicit characterization of the exponential convergence rate of the leader-following consensus problem.

Coordinated Planning for Fast Charging Stations and Distribution Networks Based on an Improved Flow Capture Location Model

The increasing penetration of plug-in electric vehi-cles(PEVs)should lead to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Nevertheless,the development of PEVs is limited by the lack of charging facilities,which is constrained by the coupled transportation-distribution network.This paper presents a stochastic bi-level model for the optimal allocation of fast charging stations(FCSs)and distribution network expansion planning(DNEP).First,a sequential capacitated flow-capturing location-allocation model(SCFCLM)is proposed at the lower level to optimize the allocation of FCSs on the transportation network.Monte-Carlo simulation(MCS)is utilized to estimate daily charging load requirements.Then,we propose an economic model for DNEP at the upper level,and the chance constrained method is employed to relax power flow constraints to address the uncertainties of loads.Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the proposed planning method.The influences of the flow capturing sequence and relaxed confidence level on the PEV charging load,FCS planning strategies and DNEP schemes are analyzed.Index Terms-Coordinated planning,fast charging station,flow-capturing model,plug-in electric vehicle,stochastic bi-level model.

In this paper,the short-,medium-,and long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Italian power system,particularly electricity consumption behavior and electricity market prices,are investigated by defining various metrics.The investigation reveals that COVID-19 lockdown caused a drop in load consumption and,consequently,a decrement in day-ahead market prices and an increase in ancillary service prices.

Providing Guaranteed Network Performance across Tenants:Advances,Challenges and Opportunities

The varied network performance in the cloud hurts application performance.This increases the tenant’s cost and becomes the key hindrance to cloud adoption.It is because virtual machines(VMs)belonging to one tenant can reside in multiple physical servers and communication interference across tenants occasionally occurs when encountering network congestion.In order to prevent such unpredictability,it is critical for cloud providers to offer the guaranteed network performance at tenant level.Such a critical issue has drawn increasing attention in both academia and industry.Many elaborate mechanisms are proposed to provide guaranteed network performance,such as guaranteed bandwidth or bounded message delay across tenants.However,due to the intrinsic complexities and limited capabilities of commodity hardware,the deployment of these mechanisms still faces great challenges in current cloud datacenters.Moreover,with the rapid development of new technologies,there are new opportunities to improve the performance of existing works,but these possibilities are not under full discussion yet.Therefore,in this paper,we survey the latest development of the network performance guarantee approaches and summarize them based on their features.Then,we explore and discuss the possibilities of using emerging technologies as knobs to upgrade the performance or overcome the inherent shortcomings of existing advances.We hope this article will help readers quickly Received:Apr.07,2020 Revised:Oct.23,2020 Editor:Haifeng Zheng understand the causes of the problems and serve as a guide to motivate researchers to develop innovative algorithms and frameworks.

Light is a powerful environmental factor influencing diverse brain functions.Clinical evidence supports the beneficial effect of light therapy on several diseases,including depression,cognitive dysfunction,chronic pain,and sleep disorders.However,the precise mechanisms underlying the effects of light therapy are still not well understood.In this review,we critically evaluate current clinical evidence showing the beneficial effects of light therapy on diseases.In addition,we introduce the research progress regarding the neural circuit mechanisms underlying the modulatory effects of light on brain functions,including mood,memory,pain perception,sleep,circadian rhythm,brain development,and metabolism.

Diverse transformations of sulfur in seabird-affected sediments revealed by microbial and stable isotope analyses

Microbial communities,sulfur isotope of sulfides(δ^(34)S_(AVS)and δ^(34)S_(CRS)),and sulfur and oxygen isotopes of sulfate(δ^(34)S_(SO_(4))and δ^(18)O_(SO_(4)))in sediments were analyzed to reveal the biogeochemical transformations of sulfur in a seabird-affected lake Y2 and a se abird-free YO from Fildes Peninsula,Antarctic Peninsula.The microbial communities in Y2 were mainly associated with penguin activities,while those in YO were limited by nutrients.The much enriched δ^(34)S_(SO_(4))recorded at depth of 30,41,and 52 cm in Y2indicates very strong sulfate reduction therein.The sulfur-degrading bacteria Pseudomonas in 0-23 cm of Y2 was 3.5 time s as abundant as that of sulfur oxidizing bacteria(SOB),indicating remarkable remineralization of organic sulfur.The abundant SOB and ^(34)S-depleted sulfate indicate considerable sulfur oxidation in 34-56-cm layer in Y2.In YO sediments,the highest abundance of Desulfotalea and the most enriched δ^(34)S_(SO_(4))(35.2‰)and δ^(34)S_(CRS)(2.5‰)indicate the strongest sulfate reduction in 28-cm layer.High abundance of Pseudomonas indicates active remineralization of organic sulfur in 3-5-cm layer in YO.The medium δ^(34)S_(SO_(4))and considerable abundance of SOB and sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB)indicate concurrence of sulfur oxidation and sulfate reduction in other layers in YO.Therefore,a high level of organic matter input from penguin populations supported the diverse microbial community and transformations of sulfur in aquatic ecosystems in Antarctica.
