Studying the membrane physiology of filamentous fungi is key to understanding their interactions with the environment and crucial for developing new therapeutic strategies for disease-causing ***,their plasma membrane has been inaccessible for a micron-sized patch-clamp pipette for pA current recordings due to the rigid chitinous cell ***,we report the first femtosecond IR laser nanosurgery of the cell wall of the filamentous fungi,which enabled patch-clamp measurements on protoplasts released from hyphae.A reproducible and highly precise(diffraction-limited,submicron resolution)method for obtaining viable released protoplasts was *** release from the nanosurgery-generated incisions in the cell wall was achieved from different regions of the *** plasma membrane of the obtained protoplasts formed tight and high-resistance(GΩ)contacts with the recording *** entire nanosurgical procedure followed by the patch-clamp technique could be completed in less than 1 *** to previous studies using heterologously expressed channels,this technique provides the opportunity to identify new ionic currents and to study the properties of the ion channels in the protoplasts of filamentous fungi in their native environment.

Activation of commercial Pt/C catalyst toward glucose electro-oxidation by irreversible Bi adsorption

The effect of irreversibly adsorbed Bi on commercial Pt/C catalyst toward glucose electro-oxidation re- action （GOR） in different electrolytes （acidic, neutral, alkaline） is studied. Bi is successfully deposited on Pt/C from Bi3＋ containing acidic solution from 0 to 90% coverage degree. The stability of the Bi layer in acid and alkaline corresponded to previous studies and started to dissolve at 0.7 V and 0.8 V versus re- versible hydrogen electrode （RIIE）, respectively. However, in neutral phosphate buffer the layer showed remarkable stability to at least 1.2V versus RHE. Bi modification at low （20%） and high （80%） coverage showed the highest increase in the activity of Pt/C toward GOR by a factor up to 7 due to the increased poisoning resistance of the modified catalyst. The effect of poisoning was especially reduced at high Bi coverage （80%）, which shows that adsorbate blocked by Bi through the third-body effect is effective. Finally, with or without Bi modification GOR on PtIC was most active in alkaline conditions.

Tendril-Based Climbing Plants to Model, Simulate and Create Bio-Inspired Robotic Systems

Bioinspiration can be considered one of the keys for future smart and versatile robotic systems. Plants could be an im- portant source of ideas despite the fact that they have not yet been deeply observed and considered. In this paper, climbing tendril-bearer plants that, by means of irritable filiform organs called tendrils, search for a support, grasp it and climb to gain height, have been used to study and develop an effective climbing robot. The study aimed first to evaluate the main movements and behaviors of the tendril from a biomimetic point of view. The tendril complexity was then simplified, a robotic model was developed and a kinematic simulator was designed and implemented to visualize and evaluate the chosen system. Finally, based on the biological, technical and numerical evaluations, the main tendril behaviors were replicated by proof of concept devices made of smart materials to move towards a practical realization and to replicate the simulated results. The designed proof of concept prototypes showed food repeatability and feasibility.

Synthesis of iron（ll） complexes with asymmetric N2O2 coordinating Schiff base-like ligands and their spin crossover properties

The synthesis of new Schiff base-like ligands with asymmetric substituents pattern and their iron complexes with pyridine as axial ligand is described. Two of the ligands and one of the iron（II） complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. One of the the iron（II） complexes shows spin crossover behavior while the others remain in the high spin state. The influence of the reduced symmetry of the ligand on the properties of the complexes is discussed.

Fibrosis is a pathological reparative process that can occur in most organs and is responsible for nearly half of deaths in the developed *** considerable research,few therapies have proven effective and been approved clinically for treatment of *** compounds are best known as antimalarial therapeutics,but they also demonstrate antiparasitic,antibacterial,anticancer,and antifibrotic *** we summarize literature describing anti-fibrotic effects of artemisinin compounds in in vivo and in vitro models of tissue fibrosis,and we describe the likely mechanisms by which artemisinin compounds appear to inhibit cellular and tissue processes that lead to *** consider alternative routes of administration of artemisinin for treatment of internal organ fibrosis,we also discuss the potential for more direct oral delivery of Artemisia plant material to enhance bioavailability and efficacy of artemisinin compared to administration of purified artemisinin drugs at comparable *** is our hope that greater understanding of the broad anti-fibrotic effects of artemisinin drugs will enable and promote their use as therapeutics for treatment of fibrotic diseases.

Types of lime binders in mortars used for the construction of the Ming Great Wall of China and their importance for the development of a conservation strategy

The most obvious characteristics of the Ming Great Wall are external masonry walls made of natural stones,bricks and lime *** to the chemical and mineralogical compositions of the original bedding and pointing mortars,dolomitic lime binder was used dominantly in the construction of the Ming Great Wall in provinces such as those around Beijing and ***-rich lime and air lime with low natural hydraulically reactive phases,which are hydrated and react slowly with the carbon dioxide in air to form calcium carbonate,were used in some western *** and microscopic investigations show that both dolomitic and calcium-rich lime mortars are almost *** dolomitic lime mortars are characterised by high strengths,low porosities and dense micro-scale *** most recent conservation principle is to preserve the Ming Great Wall as a ***,the conservation strategy should be redefined in terms of *** some of the damage to the Great Wall is related to reactions between dolomitic lime mortars and air pollutants,calcium-rich lime binders should be used for conservation and even for restoration of those parts of the Great Wall that were originally built with dolomitic *** based on natural hydraulic lime and calcium-rich lime gauged with natural pozzolana might be more compatible than other binders"for the structural consolidation of the ruins of the GreatWall.

Prediction of the biogas production using GA and ACO input features selection method for ANN model

This paper presents a fast and reliable approach to analyze the biogas production process with respect to the biogas production *** experimental data used for the developed models included 15 process variables measured at an agricultural biogas plant in *** this context,the concentration of volatile fatty acids,total solids,volatile solids acid detergent fibre,acid detergent lignin,neutral detergent fibre,ammonium nitrogen,hydraulic retention time,and organic loading rate were *** neural networks(ANN)were established to predict the biogas production *** ant colony optimization and genetic algorithms were implemented to perform the variable *** identified the significant process variables,reduced the model dimension and improved the prediction capacity of the ANN *** best prediction of the biogas production rate was obtained with an error of prediction of 6.24%and a coefficient of determination of R2=0.9.

Exploring visual quality of multidimensional time series projections

Dimensionality reduction is often used to project time series data from multidimensional to two-dimensional space to generate visual representations of the temporal *** this context,we address the problem of multidimensional time series visualization by presenting a new method to show and handle projection errors introduced by dimensionality reduction techniques on multidimensional temporal *** visualization,subsequent time instances are rendered as dots that are connected by lines or curves to indicate the temporal ***,inevitable projection artifacts may lead to poor visualization quality and misinterpretation of the temporal *** projected data points,inaccurate variations in the distances between projected time instances,and intersections of connecting lines could lead to wrong assumptions about the original *** adapt local and global quality metrics to measure the visual quality along the projected time series,and we introduce a model to assess the projection error at intersecting *** serve as a basis for our new uncertainty visualization techniques that use different visual encodings and interactions to indicate,communicate,and work with the visualization uncertainty from projection errors and artifacts along the timeline of data points,their connections,and *** approach is agnostic to the projection method and works for linear and non-linear dimensionality reduction methods alike.

Visual analytics tool for the interpretation of hidden states in recurrent neural networks

In this paper,we introduce a visual analytics approach aimed at helping machine learning experts analyze the hidden states of layers in recurrent neural *** technique allows the user to interactively inspect how hidden states store and process information throughout the feeding of an input sequence into the *** technique can help answer questions,such as which parts of the input data have a higher impact on the prediction and how the model correlates each hidden state configuration with a certain *** visual analytics approach comprises several components:First,our input visualization shows the input sequence and how it relates to the output(using color coding).In addition,hidden states are visualized through a nonlinear projection into a 2-D visualization space using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding to understand the shape of the space of the hidden *** are also employed to show the details of the evolution of the hidden state ***,a time-multi-class heatmap matrix visualizes the evolution of the expected predictions for multi-class classifiers,and a histogram indicates the distances between the hidden states within the original *** different visualizations are shown simultaneously in multiple views and support brushing-and-linking to facilitate the analysis of the classifications and debugging for misclassified input *** demonstrate the capability of our approach,we discuss two typical use cases for long short-term memory models applied to two widely used natural language processing datasets.
