Spatial coupling analysis of regional economic development and environmental pollution in China

Given the great number of studies focusing on the temporal interaction between economic and environmental subsystems, it is useful to perform a quantitative spatial as- sessment of these subsystems. In this paper, comprehensive assessment indicators for re- gional economic development and environmental pollution subsystems are constructed. Then the degree of coupling and coordination of the regional economy-environment system is calculated for 350 prefectural units in China. It is found that the economic development and environmental pollution in most prefectural units is still at a low level of coupling and coordi- nation. According to the coupling and coordination values, the Chinese territory can be di- vided into four types of area： economy-environment harmonious area, economy-environ- ment gearing area, economy-environment rivaling area and low coupling degree of econ- omy-environment area. Based on a structural analysis of the industrial sector in the four types of areas, there is a spatial relationship between the regional industrial sector structure and the coupling-coordination level. In the economy-environment harmonious area, the sectors of manufacturing of high-technology and high value-added products, such as com- munications, computer and electronic equipment, transport equipment and electrical ma- chinery, account for a large proportion of the value of local industrial output. The industrial value of the economy-environment gearing area is concentrated on the manufacturing of machinery and equipment, and. contains a few polluting sectors such as ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical manufacturing and electricity generation. The econ- omy-environment rivaling area is the type of area where polluting sectors concentrate, such as iron and steel, petrifaction, coal mining, building materials and electricity generation. Dicotyledons cope with ion(Fe) shortage by releasing low-molecular-weight organic compounds into the rhizosphere to mobilize Fe through reduction and complexation mechanisms. The effects induced by these root exudates on soil mineralogy and the connections between Fe mobilization and mineral weathering processes have not been completely clarified. In a batch experiment, we tested two different kinds of organic compounds commonly exuded by Fe-deficient plants, i.e., three organic acids(citrate, malate, and oxalate)and three flavonoids(rutin, quercetin, and genistein), alone or in combination, for their ability to mobilize Fe from a calcareous soil and modify its mineralogy. The effect of root exudates on soil mineralogy was assessed in vivo by cultivating Fe-deficient and Fe-sufficient cucumber plants(Cucumis sativus L.) in a RHIZOtest device. Mineralogical analyses were performed by X-ray powder diffraction. The batch experiment showed that citrate and, particularly, rutin(alone or combined with organic acids or genistein)promoted Fe mobilization from the soil. The combinations of rutin and organic acids modified the soil mineralogy by dissolving the amorphous fractions and promoting the formation of illite. These mineralogical alterations were significantly correlated with the amount of Fe mobilized from the soil. The RHIZOtest experiment revealed a drastic dissolution of amorphous components in the rhizosphere soil of Fe-deficient plants, possibly caused by the intense release of phenolics, amino acids, and organic acids, but without any formation of illite. Both batch and RHIZOtest experiments proved that exudates released by cucumber under Fe deficiency concurred to the rapid modification(on a day-scale) of the mineralogy of a calcareous soil.

We present a spatiotemporal model of pulse amplification in the double-pass active mirror(AM)*** types of overlap condition are studied,and the spatiotemporal scaling under the four-pulse overlapping(4 PO)condition is fully characterized for the first time,by mapping the temporal and spatial segments of beam to the instantaneous gain ***,the influence of spatiotemporal overlaps on the amplified energy,pulse distortion and intensity profile is unraveled for both AM and zigzag *** model,verified by excellent agreement between the predicted and measured results,can be a powerful tool for designing and optimizing high energy multi-pass solid-state laser amplifiers with AM,zigzag and other geometries.

Effect of Volume Fractions of Arc Sprayed Al Coatings on Tensile Properties of a Type 316 Steel Substrate

The effect of arc sprayed times, which are quantitatively described by the volume fraction of coatings, on the mechanical properties of type 316 steel, have been undertaken in the present work. Al wires were utilized as coatings materials. Tensile tests were carried out in the temperature range of Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect It has been found that grains at edges and corners of the 316 steel specimens have been dramatically constricted by grit blasting and spraying. Grit blasting has been found to exert a shot-peening effect on the mechanical properties of 316 steel specimens. Coatings with lower values of coating volume fraction strengthen the coated specimens in the very similar way as blasting. While if the volume fraction of coating, (Vv)c, exceeds a critical value, (VV)K, softens the specimens. Specimens with low values of (Vv)c, have high values of flow stress, as well as higher values of work-hardening coefficient, Calculations based on the experimental results show that the high thickness coatings have relatively lower contribution to the mechanical properties of specimens.

A Method for Estimation of Wheat Yield Loss Caused by Drought in Northwestern China

To develop a suitable method for monitoring wheat yield loss caused by drought for dry farming areas in northwestern China, daily ET0 and ETC were calculated using KC and FAO- PM from 1961 to 2000, and wheat evapotranspiration with an interval of 10 days was estimated with soil water balance equation for the mountainous areas in southern Ningxia, China. Actual water consumption and water requirements of wheat during growing season was calculated using soil water balance equation by correcting leakage of soil water and run-off of precipitation every year. A model for estimation of yield loss by drought was established based on crop growth-water consumption function and yield potential. The results show that it is an effective method for monitoring drought and estimating yield loss. This method is suitable for monitoring drought and estimating yield loss of wheat in dry farming areas in northwestern China.
