Phenotypic and molecular diversity-based prediction of heterosis in pearl millet(Pennisetum glaucum L.(R.)Br.)

Genetic distances between hybrid parents based on phenotypic traits and molecular markers were investigated to assess their relationship with heterosis for grain and stover yield and other traits in pearl millet(Pennisetum glaucum [L.] R. Br.). Fifty-one hybrids developed using 101 hybrid parents(B and R lines) and showing a wide range of genetic distance between their parents based on eight phenotypic traits and 28–38 SSRs were evaluated in two sets for two seasons. The correlation between Euclidean distance(phenotypic distance, ED) and simple matching distance(molecular distance, SM) for parents of both sets was low but positive and significant(r = 0.2, P < 0.001).The correlation of ED in parents with better-parent heterosis for grain yield was similar in both sets(r =0.38, P < 0.05). SM was not correlated with heterosis for grain yield in either set of *** results showed that phenotypic distance could be a better predictor of heterosis than molecular distance. The correlation between phenotypic distance and heterosis was not strong enough to permit the use of phenotypic diversity among parents as a major selection criterion for selection of parental lines displaying high levels of heterosis for grain and stover yield in pearl millet.

EMR2 is an EGF-like module containing mucin-like hormone receptor-2 precursor, a G-protein coupled receptor （G-PCR）. Mutation in EMR2 causes complicated disorders like polycystic kidney disease （PKD）. The structure of EMR2 shows that the fifth domain is comprised of EGF-TM7 helices. Functional assignment of EMR2 by support vector machine （SVM） revealed that along with transporter activity, several novel functions are predicted. A twenty amino acid sequence ＂MGGRVFLVFLAFCVWLTLPG＂ acts as the signal peptide responsible for post- translational transport. Eight amino acids are involved in N-glycosylation sites and two cleavage sites are LeuS17 and SerS18 in EMR2. The residue Arg241 is responsible for interaction with glycosaminoglycan and chondroitin sulfate. On the basis of structure, function and ligand binding sites, competitive EMR2 inhibitors designed may decrease the rate of human diseases like Usher＇s syndrome, bilateral frontoparietal polymicrogyria and PKD.

Erratic rainfall often results in intermittent drought and/or waterlogging and limits maize(Zea mays L.)productivity in many parts of the Asian *** climate-resilient maize germplasm possessing tolerance to these key abiotic stresses without a yield penalty under optimal growing conditions is a challenge for breeders working in stress-vulnerable agro-ecologies in the *** stress-resilient maize for rainfed stress-prone ecologies is identified as one of the priority areas for CIMMYT-Asia maize *** applied rapid cycle genomic selection(RCGS)on two multiparent yellow synthetic populations(MYS-1 and MYS-2)to improve grain yield simultaneously under drought and waterlogging conditions using genomic-estimated breeding values(GEBVs).Also,the populations were simultaneously advanced using recurrent phenotypic selection(PS)by exposing them to managed drought and waterlogging and intermating tolerant plants from the two selection *** cycles per se(C1,C2,and C3)of the two populations developed using RCGS and PS approach and their test-cross progenies were evaluated separately in multilocation trials under managed drought,waterlogging,and optimal moisture *** genetic gains were observed with both GS and PS,except with PS in MYS-2 under drought and with GS in MYS-1 under *** genetic gains from GS were relatively higher under drought conditions(110 and 135 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))compared to waterlogging(38 and 113 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))in both MYS-1 and MYS-2,***,under waterlogging stress PS showed at par or better than GS as gain per year with PS was 80 and 90 kg ha^(-1),whereas with GS it was 90 and 43 kg ha^(-1) for MYS-1 and MYS-2,*** findings suggested that careful constitution of a multiparent population by involving trait donors for targeted stresses,along with elite highyielding parents from diverse genetic background,and its improvement using RCGS is an effe

Biochemical Traits and Physico-Chemical Attributes of Aromatic-Fine Rice in Relation to Yield Potential

Aromatic rice has great potential to attract rice consumer for its taste and deliciousness, and high price to boost up the economic condition of the rice grower in the developing countries. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes in relation to yield potentials of fine aromatic rice varieties in Bangladesh. Two aromatic fine rice cultivars, Ukunmadhu and Kataribough (local land races), one hybridized variety BRRIdhan-32 and one mutant variety Binasail were used in the experiment. The results revealed that rice varieties BRRIdhan-32 and Binasail showed the greater number of branches of panicle, grain size, grain yield and harvest index as compared to aromatic varieties. On the other hand, aromatic rice showed taller plant stature, more tiller, plant biomass and larger panicle but lower number of primary and secondary branches, grain size, yield and harvest index. The biochemical attributes namely chlorophyll and soluble protein content were higher at vegetative stage as compared to panicle initiation and flowering stages. The aromatic rice Kataribhough and Ukonmondhu contained higher amount of total free amino acid as compared to that of Binasail and BRRIdhan32. Other biochemical parameters namely nitrate reductase activity (NRA), total sugar and free amino acid contents were higher at flowering stage compared to those contained at tillering and panicle initiation stages. Physico-chemical properties of grain viz. length, breadth, L/B ratio, nitrogen (%) and protein (%) were significantly higher in fine rice as compared to aromatic rice. From the results it may be concluded that the high yielding varieties were more efficient in transfer of photosynthate to the grain i.e. economic yield and that is why BRRIdhan32 recorded the highest yield. Poor yield in Ukonmodhu and Kataribhough was due to low harvest index indicating minimum translocation of assimilates to the grains.

Agricultural areas of land are deteriorating every day owing to population increase, rapid urbanization, and industrialization. To feed today’s huge populations, increased crop production is required from smaller areas, which warrants the continuous application of high doses of inorganic fertilizers to agricultural land. These cause damage to soil health and, therefore, nutrient imbalance conditions in arable soils. Under these conditions, the benefits of microbial inoculants (such as Actinobacteria) as replacements for harmful chemicals and promoting ecofriendly sustainable farming practices have been made clear through recent technological advances. There are multifunctional traits involved in the production of different types of bioactive compounds responsible for plant growth promotion, and the biocontrol of phytopathogens has reduced the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. There are some well-known groups of nitrogen-fixing Actinobacteria, such as Frankia, which undergo mutualism with plants and offer enhanced symbiotic *** addition to nitrogen fixation, increasing availability of major plant nutrients in soil due to the solubilization of immobilized forms of phosphorus and potassium compounds, production of phytohormones, such as indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-pyruvic acid, gibberellins, and cytokinins, improving organic matter decomposition by releasing cellulases, xylanase, glucanases, lipases, and proteases, and suppression of soil-borne pathogens by the production of siderophores, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and chitinase are important features of Actinobacteria useful for combating biotic and abiotic stresses in *** positive influence of Actinobacteria on soil fertility and plant health has motivated us to compile this review of important findings associated with sustaining plant productivity in the long run.

Blossoming Characteristics in Black Cumin Genotypes in Relation Seed Yield Influenced by Sowing Time

Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.;Family-Ranunculaceae) is an important spice crop. Mature seeds are consumed for edible and medical purposes and also used as a food additive and flavour. Seed of black cumin has great potentiality as spice crop due to nutritive and medicinal values. The experiments were carried out at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during 2011 to 2012 to determine optimum planting time for seed production of black cumin. The experiment was two factorials. Factor A: 4 genotypes were V1: Exotic, Iran;V2: BARI kalozira-1;V3: Local, Faridpur and V4: Local, Natore. Factor B: sowing date: D1: 16 October;D2: 1 November;D3: 16 November and D4: 1 December. Therefore, treatment combinations were 16 in total. So, in 3 replications total plot was 48. Result revealed that significantly the highest 2.37 t/ha in V1, followed by V2 (1.96 t/ha). V2 and V3 (1.97 t/ha) were statistically similar and maximum yield was obtained from D2 (2.65 t/ha). In combined effect, maximum yield 3.00 t/ha was obtained in V1D2.. Investigation on time of sowing revealed that performance of black cumin was better in earlier sowings (16 October, 1 November) than later ones. The highest yield (4g plant-1;2.65 tha-1) was obtained when the crop was sown on 1 November. Among the genotypes, the exotic one with sowing in 1 November gave the highest seed yield (4.54 g·plant-1;3.00 t·ha-1).

Clinical outcome of orbital apex syndrome in COVID associated mucormycosis patients in a tertiary care hospital

AIM: To share clinical pattern of presentation, the modalities of surgical intervention and the one month postsurgical outcome of rhino-orbito-mucormycosis(ROCM) ***: All COVID associated mucormycosis(CAM) patients underwent comprehensive multidisciplinar y examination by ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist and physician. Patients with clinical and radiological evidence of orbital apex involvement were included in the study. Appropriate medical and surgical intervention were done to each patient. Patients were followed up one-month post intervention. RESULTS: Out of 89 CAM patients, 31(34.8%) had orbital apex syndrome. Sixty-six(74.2%) of such patients had pre-existing diabetes mellitus, 18(58%) patients had prior documented use of steroid use, and 55(61.8%) had no light perception(LP) presenting vision. Blepharoptosis, proptosis, complete ophthalmoplegia were common clinical findings. Seventeen(19.1%) of such patients had variable amount of cavernous sinus involvement. Endoscopic debridement of paranasal sinuses and orbit with or without eyelid sparing limited orbital exenteration was done in most cases, 34(38.2%) patients could retain vision in the affected eye. CONCLUSION: Orbital apex involvement in CAM patients occur very fast. It not only leads to loss of vision but also sacrifice of the eyeball, orbital contents and eyelids. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention can preserve life, vision and spare mutilating surgeries.
