Distribution of Respiratory Tract Infectious Diseases in Relation to Particulate Matter(PM_(2.5))Concentration in Selected Urban Centres in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria

Due to the visibility of soot in the environment of the Niger Delta especially Rivers State that has led to the increase of Respiratory Tract Infections(RTIs)in the region,this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between Particulate Matter(PM_(2.5))concentration and the incident of Respiratory Tract Infections(RTIs)in selected urban centres of the Niger *** on RTIs were collected from the Hospital Management Boards of the Ministries of Health of Rivers,Bayelsa and Delta States and the data for PM_(2.5)were remotely sensed from 2016 to 2019,and subsequently analyzed with ANOVA and Spearman’s rank correlation *** findings of this study revealed that there was significant variation in the occurrence of PM_(2.5)across the selected urban centres in the Niger Delta *** PM_(2.5)for the reviewed years was far above the World Health Organization(WHO)annual permissible limit of 10μg/m^(3)thereby exacerbating Respiratory Tract Infections(RTIs).The epidemiology of the RTIs showed that there are basically four(4)prominent RTI diseases:Asthma,Tuberculosis,Pneumonia and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD).The result of this study showed that the concentration of PM_(2.5)varies in all the selected cities,and the mean monthly variation(2016-2019)showed that Port Harcourt had 47.27μg/m^(3)for January while Yenagoa and Asaba had 46μg/m^(3)and 47.51μg/m^(3)respectively for January;while the lowest mean value in the cities were seen within the month of September and October,which also had a strong seasonal influence on the concentration of PM_(2.5).The concentration of PM_(2.5)and the numbers of RTIs also gradually increases in the study areas from 2016 to *** study recommends that the necessary regulatory bodies should closely monitor the activities of the companies likely to cause such pollution;guild them through their operations and give prompt sanctions and heavy fines to defaulters of the accepted standards.

Chemical and minero-petrographical changes on granulite rocks affected by weathering processes

The purpose of this work is to study the weathering processes of the granulite rocks of the Serre Massif (southern Calabria,Italy) using a multidisciplinary approach based on field studies,geochemical modeling,and minero?petrographical *** granulite rocks are plagioclase-rich with minor amphibole,clinopyroxene,orthopyroxene,biotite,and garnet and their texture are *** reaction path modeling was performed to simulate the evolution of groundwaters upon interaction with local granulite by means of the software package EQ3/6,version *** were performed in kinetic (time) mode under a closed system at a constant temperature of 11.5℃,(which reproduces the average temperature of local area) and fixing the fugacity of CO2 at 10-2.34 bar (mean value).During the most advanced stage of weathering the main mineralogical changes are: partial destruction and transformation of biotite and plagioclase associated with neoformation of ferruginous products and secondary clay minerals producing a change in the origin rock *** secondary solid phases observed during the geochemical modeling (kaolinite,vermiculite and ferrihydrite) are similar to those found in this natural ***,the soil-like material mainly characterized by mostly sand to gravel grain-size fractions is the final result of the weathering processes.

MIS 5e sea surface temperature estimation;a multi-proxy approach using a marine macrofossil assemblage(Mar Piccolo,Gulf of Taranto,Southern Italy)

It is reported a multi-proxy palaeoclimatic study conducted on a MIS 5e calcarenite from the Mar Piccolo Basin(MP),Gulf of Taranto(GT)(Central Mediterranean).The calcarenite returned a rich malacofauna consisting of 120 extant species,including four of the tropical Senegalese Fauna,today absent in the *** biogeographic-climatic affinity of the assemblage shows,compared to today,a double percentage of warm affinity species,while the cold affinity species are nearly equally represented,indicating a warmer but not strictly tropical *** is confirmed by the most recurring preferred SST ranges of the assemblage,indicating an average of 20℃.The skeletal compositions of five well-preserved molluscan and coral specimens were analyzed for trace elements and stable isotopes for further mean SST *** the comparison of the results of several equations available in literature,it appears that only some SST estimations are realistic,converging into similar values of,on average,20.8±0.9℃.Considering all the used proxies,the MIS 5e SST difference compared to today falls in the range 1.2—2.0℃for the GT(being a more reasonable scenario)and 2.0—2.8℃for the *** is not a firmly tropical-like SST setting as suggested by the sole Senegalese fauna,indicating at least 2.7℃—3.5℃more than today’s GT and MP,*** approximations and assumptions made for obtaining SST values with any single proxy indicate the need of a multi-proxy approach to define the best SST estimation.

Gastric low-grade mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma: Helicobacter pylori and beyond

The stomach is the most frequently involved site for extranodal lymphomas,accounting for nearly two-thirds of all gastrointestinal *** is widely accepted that gastric B-cell,low-grade mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT)-lymphoma is caused by Helicobacter pylori(***)***-lymphomas may engender different clinical and endoscopic ***,diagnosis is confirmed in patients with only vague dyspeptic symptoms and without macroscopic lesions on gastric *** eradication leads to lymphoma remission in a large number of patients when treatment occurs at an early stage(Ⅰ-Ⅱ1).Neoplasia confined to the submucosa,localized in the antral region of the stomach,and without API2-MALT1 translocation,shows a high probability of remission following *** *** both bacterial infection and lymphoma recur,further eradication therapy is generally ***,chemotherapy and,in selected cases,surgery are the available therapeutic options with a high success rate for those patients who fail to achieve remission,while data on immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies (rituximab)are still *** 5-year survival rate is higher than 90%,but careful,long-term follow-up is required in these patients since lymphoma recurrence has been reported in some cases.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson＇s disease： a possible target for neuroprotection

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles which are required for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Thus, it is not surprising that irregularities in mitochondrial function result in cellular damage and are linked with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson＇s disease. Evidence that mitochondrial dysfunction is key to the pathogenesis of Parkinson＇s disease is founded in studies in post-mortem tissue from patients with Parkinson＇s disease, and also from genetic studies stemming from patients with familial Parkinson＇s disease. Whether triggered by environmental or genetic factors, mitochondrial dysfunction occurs early in the pathogenic process, and is central to Parkinson＇s disease pathology. As such, targeting the mitochondria to slow or halt disease progression is an attractive strategy for disease-modifying agents in Parkinson＇s disease. Indeed, several therapies which target the mitochondria have been investigated as neuroproteetive treatments for Parkinson＇s disease. This review will discuss the evidence supporting mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson＇s disease pathology as well as treatment strategies that target the mitochondria.

Non invasive evaluation of liver fibrosis in paediatric patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

AIM: To identify the independent predictors of hepatic fibrosis in 69 children with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) due to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: All patients with clinically suspected NASH underwent liver biopsy as a confirmatory test. The following clinical and biochemical variables at baseline were examined as likely predictors of fibrosis at histology: age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), dyastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting glucose, fasting insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistence (HOMA-IR), cholesterol, tryglicerides, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), AST/ALT ratio, gamma glutamil transferase (GT), platelet count, prothrombin time (PT). RESULTS: At histology 28 (40.6%) patients had no fibrosis and 41 (59.4%) had mild to bridging fibrosis. At multivariate analysis, BMI > 26.3 was the only independent predictor of fibrosis (OR = 5.85, 95% CI = 1.6-21). CONCLUSION: BMI helps identify children with NASH who might have fibrotic deposition in the liver.

Role of interleukin polymorphisms in gastric cancer: “Pros and cons”

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori ) infection is the leading cause of gastric cancer worldwide. Infection with this bacterium causes a chronic active immune response that persists for the life of the host. The combination of bacterial factors, environmental insults, and the host immune response drives the initiation and progression of mucosal atrophy, metaplasia, and dysplasia toward GC. Among the host factors, IL-1 gene cluster polymorphisms (IL-1B encoding IL-1β and IL-1RN encoding IL-1ra, its naturally occurring receptor antagonist) play a decisive role in modulating the risk of developing hypochlorhydria, gastric atrophy and GC in the presence of H. pylori infection. In particular, one single nucleotide polymorphism in the IL-1B promoter (IL-1B-511C T), and the short allele of a 86-bp variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism in the IL-1RN second intron (IL-1RN*2) are associated with an increased risk for GC. However this hypothesis is still to be fully confirmed. This review focuses on the divergent results obtained by several epidemiological and functional in vitro and in vivo studies and show that IL-1 genotyping has still no role in the clinical management of patients with H. pylori infection.

Comparison of a monoclonal antigen stool test (Hp StAR) with the ^(13)C-urea breath test in monitoring Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy

AIM： To evaluate the agreement between a mAb-based stool test （HP STAR） and the urea breath test （UBT） in monitoring （H pylon） infection after eradication therapy. METHODS： Patients with discordant results on UBT and Hp STAR underwent endoscopy with biopsies for rapid urease test, culture, and histology to confirm H pylori status. RESULTS： Among 250 patients （50±14 years）, 240 （96.0%） had concordant UBT and Hp STAR tests with a significant correlation between DOB and A values （R = 0.87; P〈0.0001）. The remaining 10 （4.0%） patients had discordant tests （positive Hp STAR and negative UBT） with the Hp STAR inaccurate in five cases （false positive） and UBT inaccurate in the other five cases （false negative）. The “maximal expected” sensitivity, specificity, ＋PV, -PV, ＋LR, and -LR were 91%, 100%, 100%, 97.4%, ∞, and 8.2 respectively, for the UBT, and 100%, 97.4%, 91%, 100%, 38.8, and 0, respectively, for the Hp STAR. Overall accuracy for both tests was 98%. CONCLUSION： Both the UBT and the Hp StAR are equally accurate in monitoring H pylori infection. Nowadays, the choice of the “best” non-invasive H pylori test in the post-treatment setting should be done not only in terms of diagnostic accuracy but also in view of cost and local facilities.

Oleuropein-Specific-β-Glucosidase Activity Marks the Early Response of Olive Fruits (Olea europaea) to Mimed Insect Attack

Olive fruits are seriously deteriorated by pre and postharvest damage due to the attack of insects, such as Bactrocera olaea, which strongly alters the quality of olives. Defence response in olive fruits injured both by pathogens and by mechanical damages has been associated with the enzyme β-glucosidase, which specifically hydrolyses oleuropein, producing highly reactive aldehyde molecules. In situ detection of ^-glucosidase activity in olive fruit tissues following injury, which simulates Bactrocera oleae punctures, is reported. The assay was performed in two cultivars showing different degrees of susceptibilities to fly infestation. In both cultivars, the histochemical assay for β-glucosidase showed that within 20 min after the injury, a strong ^-glucosidase activity could be observed in the damaged tissues. Thereafter a progressive enzyme inactivation occurred starting from tissues around the boundary of the injury with decrease of the enzyme activity and stopped after 3 h. Whereas the mass of active cells reached a distance of （300±50） μm from the edge of the injury. Biochemical analyses showed that in extracts of the injured fruit, β-glucosidase activity rapidly increased within 20 min from injury, thereafter decreasing and reaching values comparable with those in intact fruits. Following puncture, the oleuropein contents did not change significantly in the high susceptibility cultivar, whereas it rapidly decreased in the cultivar showing low susceptibility. The results strongly suggest that olive fruits susceptible towards fly infestation could be related to the ability of the oleuropein-degrading-β-glucosidase to produce the highly reactive molecules in the damaged tissues. As a consequence of puncture, high level of peroxidase activity was detected. This feature also suggested that this enzyme could play a key role in the defence response against insect injuries.

Lack of association between UGT1A7,UGT1A9,ARP,SPINK1 and CFTR gene polymorphisms and pancreatic cancer in Italian patients

AIM： To investigate simultaneously UGT1A7, UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK and CFTR genes to verify whether genetic polymorphisms predispose to the development of pancreatic cancer （PC）.METHODS： Genomic DNA of 61 pancreatic cancer patients and 105 healthy controls （HC） were analyzed. UGT1A7 genotyping was determined by PCR-RFLP analysis. Specific PCR and sequencing were used to analyze genetic variants of UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK1 and CFTR genes.RESULTS： Four different alleles （^＊1：WT; ＂2： N129K and R131K; ＂3： N129K, R131K, and W208R; and ＂4： W208R） in UGT1A7 and three different alleles （^＊1：WT;^＊4： Y242X; and ^＊5： D256N） in UGT1A9 were detected. All UGT1A polymorphisms were observed at similar frequency in PC patients and HC. Seven different alleles in ARP were found in PC patients and HC at similar frequency. The SPINK1 mutations N34S and P55S occurred in five PC patients with a prevalence （4.1%） not significantly different from that observed （2.0%） in HC. The only CFTR AFS08 mutation was recognized in three PC patients with a prevalence （4.9%） similar to HC.CONCLUSION： UGT1A7, UGT1A9, ARP, SPINK1 and CFTR gene polymorphisms are not associated with PC in Italian patients.
