Material Mechanical Properties Necessary for the Structural Intervention of Concrete Structures

Structural intervention involves the restoration and/or upgrading of the mechanical performances of structures. In addition to concrete and steel, which are typical materials for concrete structures, various ber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), cementitious materials with bers, polymers, and adhesives are often applied for structural intervention. In order to predict structural performance, it is necessary to develop a generic method that is applicable to not only to steel, but also to other materials. Such a generic model could provide information on the mechanical properties required to improve the structural performance. External bonding, which is a typical scheme for structural intervention, is not applied for new structures. It is necessary to clarify material properties and structural details in order to achieve better bonding strength at the interface between the substrate concrete and an externally bonded material. This paper presents the mechanical properties of substrate concrete and relevant intervention material for the fol- lowing purposes: ① to achieve better shear strength and ultimate deformation of a member after struc- tural intervention;and ② to achieve better debonding strength for external bonding. This paper concludes that some of the mechanical properties and structural details for intervention materials that are necessary for improvement in mechanical performance in structures with structural intervention are new, and differ from those of structures without intervention. For example, high strength and stiff- ness are important properties for materials in structures without structural intervention, whereas high fracturing strain and low stiffness are important properties for structural intervention materials.

Meso-scale modeling of chloride diffusion in concrete with consideration of effects of time and temperature

A meso-scale truss network model was developed to predict chloride diffusion in concrete. The model regards concrete as a three-phase composite of mortar matrix, coarse aggregates, and the interfacial transition zone （ITZ） between the mortar matrix and the aggregates. The diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ can be analytically determined with only the water-to-cement ratio and volume fraction of fine aggregates. Fick＇s second law of diffusion was used as the governing equation for chloride diffusion in a homogenous medium （e.g., mortar）; it was discretized and applied to the truss network model. The solution procedure of the truss network model based on the diffusion law and the meso-scale composite structure of concrete is outlined. Additionally, the dependence of the diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ on exposure duration and temperature is taken into account to illustrate their effect on chloride diffusion coefficient. The numerical results show that the exposure duration and environmental temperature play important roles in the diffusion rate of chloride ions in concrete. It is also concluded that the meso-scale truss network model can be applied to chloride transport analysis of damaged （or cracked） concrete.

采用单搭接头剪切试验比较FRP-混凝土界面使用不同树脂黏结剂在不同浸水时长下的剪切黏结强度、破坏模式、剪切断裂能、黏结滑移曲线等黏结特性。最大6个月的20℃浸水试验表明,采用多乙烯多胺混合硬化树脂的界面黏结强度降低了11%～14%,采用多胺硬化树脂的界面黏结强度降低了2%～10%,黏结层断裂能和局部最大剪应力也有所降低。浸水后的界面破坏模式由浸水前的混凝土黏聚层转移为界面黏着层,这表明浸水条件下界面黏着力降低。同时,树脂黏结材料的材料试验结果表明,树脂本身的抗拉强度在浸水6个月后有所提升,而剪切黏结强度只有微小降低。局部黏结滑移关系的计算结果表明浸水后最大局部剪切应力有所降低,同时界面的平均剪切断裂能降低26%。

Controlled synthesis of magnetic carbon nanoparticles via glycerol/ferrocene co-pyrolysis with magnetic induction

We performed a controlled synthesis of magnetic carbon nanoparticles （M-CNPs） via co-pyrolysis of glycerol and ferrocene with magnetic induction. The morphology of the synthesized M-CNPs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis was used to analyze the carbon and Fe contents. M-CNPs that responded to magnetic stimulation were also examined with an AC-magnetic susceptibility analyzer. Our investigations on the influence of synthesis temperature in the range 700-1000℃ suggested that for an initial glycerol to ferrocene weight ratio of 3：1 and a temperature of 800 ℃ gave the highest yield of M-CNPs. Comparing the synthesis with and without magnetic induction, the controlled synthesis under the influence of magnetic induction shows promise as a method for producing high quality M-CNPs in high yields.

Dynamic Transition of Exchange Rate Regime in China

Thepaper considers the optimal transition path for China＇s exchange rate regime. How can China successfully make the shift from the current dollar peg regime to a more desirable regime, whether a basket peg or a floating regime？ To answer this question, we develop a dynamic small open economy general equilibrium model. We construct four transition policies based on a basket peg or a floating regime and compare the welfare gains of these policies relative to maintaining the dollar peg regime. Two main results are derived from the quantitative analysis using Chinese data from 1999Q1 to 2010Q4. First, following a gradual adjustment to a basket peg regime is the most appropriate path for China to take, with minimal welfare losses associated with the shift in the exchange rate regime. Second, a sudden shift to the basket peg is the second best solution, and is superior to a sudden shift to floating because the monetary authority can efficiently determine optimal weights to attach to currencies in the basket to achieve policy goals once they adopt a basket peg regime.

Intussusception is a common cause of mechanical bowel obstruction among children,with older children being more likely to have a pathological lead point.Intestinal neoplasms are rare and small intestinal lipomas are even less common.Herein we describe a case of a 7-year-old boy with ileoileal intussusception,with an ileal lipoma as the pathological lead point.Computed tomography was useful pre-operatively for revealing intussusception due to lipoma as the pathologic lead point.

The Accuracy of Initial Bone Cutting in Total Knee Arthroplasty

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of initial bone cutting of the distal femur and the proximal tibia in TKA using an image-free navigation system. Methods: From February 2006 to March 2013, we evaluated 60 knees in 50 patients using an image-free navigation system (Navigation: Stryker Navigation Cart System;Software: Stryker Knee Navigation;Ver2.0: Stryker Orthopaedics US NJ Mahwah). First, we measured the angle shown by the navigation system before cutting, at the time we set the jig. Second, we measured the angles shown by navigation after the bone was cut using the jig. Then, we compared these two angles for each patient to determine the bone cutting error. Results: In the distal femur, 37 of 60 knees were cut in an extended position in the sagittal plane, and 26 of 60 knees were cut in a varus in the coronal plane. In the proximal tibia, 29 of 60 knees were cut with decreased posterior slope in the sagittal plane, and 26 of 60 knees were cut in a valgus. Conclusions: In this study, the distal femur tended to be cut in an extended and a varus position and the proximal tibia did with decreased posterior slope and in a valgus position after initial bone cutting. It is necessary to note the initial cutting error in TKA. Since cutting errors affect postoperative outcome, we should cut bones several times. And as the reasons of the cause of the error, we propose new reason that cutting bone is not parallel with accuracy to AP axis.

Introduction: The prevalence of asthma in the elderly has been increasing due to the aging of the global population. Appropriate treatment for asthma in the elderly is now a major issue, as the disease is often fatal and incurs high medical costs in the elderly population. There have been few recent reports on asthma treatment for the elderly in the real-world clinical settings. Objectives: This study was performed to assess how respiratory physicians manage asthma in elderly patients in clinical settings in Japan. Methods: Respiratory physicians in 16 Japanese hospitals responded to a questionnaire survey on asthma and COPD treatment between December 2014 and February 2015. The analysis was performed using data collected from medical records on 2041 asthma patients. Results: The mean patient age was 61.2 years, and 36.6% of the patients were men. In the breakdown by age, 1018 (49.9%) of the patients were elderly (≥ 65 years). Compared to the non-elderly, the elderly patients had a significantly lower BMI, greater smoking history in pack-years, and poorer pulmonary function. There were no significant differences between the elderly and non-elderly in the prescription rates of common medications such as inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta-agonists (LABA) administered via inhaler or transdermal patch, long-acting muscarinic antagonists, or leukotriene receptor antagonists. In contrast, mucoactive drugs (18.7% vs. 12.3%, P P P = 0.02). Conclusions: According to this survey, the prescription rates of mucoactive drugs, macrolides, and transdermal LABA were significantly higher in the elderly than in the non-elderly.
