Semi-Quantitative Histological Analysis of the Effect of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Carbon Dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) Intradermic Injection on Fibroblast and Collagen Proliferation in the Skin of Wistar Rats

Background: In recent years, so-called “non-ablative rejuvenation” has been carried out with the use of lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) to stimulate collagen production by dermal fibroblasts. Intradermal infusion of CO2 stimulates fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen and elastin, contributing to the retraction of the skin and tissue rejuvenation. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of IPL and the intradermal infusion of CO2 on fibroblast proliferation and collagen in the skin of female rats. Methods: Sixteen adult female Wistar rats were divided into two groups of eight animals. Group 1 underwent IPL and group 2 underwent intradermal CO2 infusion. There was a total of 8 weeks of treatment. We conducted a punch in each animal before any procedure (T0), another punch in the middle of treatment at 4 weeks post-procedure (T1) and a punch at the end of treatment at 8 weeks post-procedure (T2). The cells involved in inflammation, fibrosis and vascularization of the injured tissue by histopathology were analyzed. Results: There was statistically significant fibroblast proliferation and collagen proliferation noted when analyzing all 16 animals together and also when considering the two study groups separately. In both groups, the greatest proliferation of fibroblasts coincided with periods of increased collagen production. Conclusion: Both IPL and intradermal CO2 infusion stimulated fibroblast and collagen proliferation in the skin of the rats studied.

Orthotophic Liver Transplantation in Giant Hepatic Hemangioma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Hemangioma is the most common benign tumor affecting the liver in 7% of general population. One of the rare presentations of this pathology is gigantic liver hemangioma, reported in the literature as anecdotal cases. In selected cases, liver transplantation has been a therapeutic option. We herein describe a case of massive liver hemangioma which was submitted to liver transplant, and the main indication for liver transplant in this case was a severe psychosocial impact of the disease in the patient’s life, altogether with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome and abdominal discomfort.

Transfer of the Trapezius to the Deltoid for Treatment of Shoulder Instability after Lesions of the Brachial Plexus

Objective: To clarify the indications and to describe the surgical technique and outcomes of surgery involving transfer of the trapezius to the deltoid for the treatment of lesions of the brachial plexus in patients with multidirectional instability in the shoulder. Method: In 17 patients (mean age, 23 years) operated at Sao Vicente de Paulo Hospital and the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Passo Fundo, Brazil from?1999 to 2009, we performed trapezius transfer to the proximal humerus. In these patients, the mean interval between trauma and surgery was 8 months. Results: Functional improvement and resolution of multidirectional instability of the shoulder were observed in all the patients. No patient showed immediate postoperative complications. The mean active mobility was as follows: 95° flexion, 50° abduction, 45° external rotation, and internal rotation at the level of the first lumbar vertebra (L1). The trapezius muscle strength was classified as grade III, and the UCLA functional outcome was 22 points. The postoperative satisfaction was excellent, and occasional pain and weakness was reported by all the patients. Conclusions: Transfer of the trapezius muscle to the proximal humerus provides better results in patients with a more than 6-month-old lesion. This procedure also preserves passive mobility of the limb, confers shoulder stability, provides active mobility, and prevents osteoarthrosis.

Artistic Practices [Between] Gender and Technologies

This paper was carried out by the group of professors-maia Creus, tamara Diaz, and Ines Martins from the Design Analysis and Prospective Department, with the collaboration of the Catalan Institute for Women, Generalitat de Catalunya. maia Creus and Ines Martins are parts of the research group TADD (Theory, Analysis, Design, and Development) recognized by Ramon Llull University. The research, based on feminist and performance studies, focuses on artistic groups currently working in Catalonia and whose practices produce tools and technology sharing, highlight the social and educational potential of ICTs (information and communication technologies) free access when used, consciously and critically, from feminist perspectives assumed. The research project was developed as a dual methodological process. This research group has developed a critical review of the three conceptual axes-women, art, and technology-around which revolves the present study and, in parallel, has conducted field work directly with groups of selected artists, in order to meet them within their areas of production and to know more about their working methods, theoretical discourse, goals, frustrations, and desires. This deployment in parallel was used to develop a group of key concepts that revolve around "free culture" and "culture of access" that in contrast with the practices and theories of the investigated groups are necessary to intercept and reinterpret. Through various forms of visibility, this paper intends to investigate, promote, and share these tools, technologies, and pedagogies developed by these groups which, by its own dynamics of collective work, as well as the processes of public participation, emphasize forms of interculturality and interdisciplinary.
