Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FDG-PET relative to CT for detecting metastatic cervical lymph nodes in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and to ascertain the factors that affect this accuracy。Methods: A total of 1076 lymph nodes obtained from 35 neck dissections in 26 OSCC patients who preoperatively underwent both FDG-PET and CT were retrospectively analyzed。For pathological metastatic lymph nodes, the lymph node size (short-axis diameter), the ratio of intranodal tumor deposits, and the size of intranodal tumor deposits (maximum diameter of metastatic foci in each lymph node) were histologically recorded。Results: Forty-six lymph nodes from 23 neck sides were pathologically diagnosed metastases。The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of FDG-PET evaluated individually per neck side were 74, 92, 80, 94 and 65%, respectively, whereas those of CT were 78, 58, 71, 78 and 58%, respectively。FDG-PET detected 100% of metastatic lymph nodes > 10 mm, intranodal tumor deposits -> 9 mm, and intranodal tumor deposits with a ratio > 75%, whereas no nodes or tumor deposits smaller than 5 mm were detected。The spatial resolution limitations of FDG-PET were responsible for 16 of 20 (80%) false-negative PET results in lymph nodes。Conclusion: FDG-PET is a useful tool for preoperative evaluation of the neck because it accurately detects metastatic lymph nodes≥10 mm and has fewer false positive cases than CT。The high specificity of FDG-PET for lymph node metastases may play an important role in avoiding unnecessary neck dissection。

The aim of this study was to quantify the relationships between four physiological parameters of masseter activity during chewing and properties related to the sizes and textures of the six representative test foods. The physiological parameters analyzed were the number of chewing cycles, chewing time, masseter amplitude, and cycle duration, which were obtained from masseter surface electromyography recorded in ten (seven male and three female) healthy, young participants. The six test foods differed in size dimensions (length, width, and height) and in textural properties (hardness, fracturability, and adhesiveness). The quantitative relationships were examined using linear regression. Nine statistically significant regression coefficients were found between the four physiological parameters and the textural properties, but not the height, of the test foods. From the regression coefficients, contributions of the food properties to the physiological parameters were estimated. Individual relationships between the physiological parameters and textural properties of the test foods are discussed in relation to their physiological implications.

This study examined the effects of the textural properties and chemical components of foods on masseter activity patterns. Ten healthy young participants (seven men and three women) were asked to chew four gummy candies with different flavors while their masseter activities were recorded by a surface electromyogram. The masseter activity patterns during chewing were analyzed quantitatively using a TP technique, generating three TP values (T25, T50 and T75). The textural analysis included four representative properties, and six sugars and four organic acids were tested in the chemical analysis. The hierarchical cluster analysis classified the T25 and T75 values into four subclusters and classified the T50 values into three subclusters. Two T75 subclusters differed significantly in the combined amounts of the two predominant sugars (sucrose and maltose);however, these T75 subclusters did not differ in their organic acid contents or textural properties. Therefore, sucrose and maltose affect masseter activity patterns during chewing, particularly in the later stage of masseter activity.

Synthesis of CaO-SiO<sub>2</sub>Compounds Using Materials Extracted from Industrial Wastes

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) cement is an attractive material in endodontic dentistry. The purpose of this study was to produce calcium silicate, which is a major component of MTA, from waste materials. A dental alginate impression gel and used chalks were selected and mixed in a suitable ratio (Code: EXP). As a control, CaCO3 and a commercial diatomite were used (Code: CON). Each powder was heated to 850。C and 1000。C, and then kneaded with water. TG-DTA, compressive tests, SEM observations, elemental mapping analyses, and XRD analyses were performed. TG-DTA indicated that weight reduction of CaCO3 started at 600。C, and it completely decomposed on heating at 850。C. The strength was affected by the temperature. After heating, CaCO3 was transformed into CaO and/or Ca2SiO4, and Ca(OH)2 was formed by mixing with water. There were no differences between EXP and CON. These data suggested that recycled wastes might be promising MTA sources.
