Occurrence of Antimicrobials in River Water Samples from Rural Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The occurrence of antimicrobials in the aquatic environment and drinking water has raised the question of their impact on the environment and public health. Animal production is one of the most expressive activities of Brazilian agribusiness. In order to ensure the productivity and competitiveness of the sector, the use of drugs for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes is a common practice. Due to the continuous release of antimicrobials into the environment, the aim of this study was to compare the frequency of detection of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in surface water collected from rural areas in Lidice District of Rio Claro, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An investigative study was conducted with 24 river water samples analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry and the aim of this study was to determine residues of sulfonamides and tetracyclines based on the USEPA method 1694. The results indicated the presence of sulfamethoxazole and oxytetracycline concentrations at the ng·L-1 level. The applied method showed overall good performance with recoveries above 57%, method detection limits ≤ 7.17 ng·L-1, method quantification limits ≤ 23.90 ng·L-1 and good linearity.

Ecophysiological acclimatization to cyclic water stress in Eucalyptus

Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration,increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly.

Leaf water potential and gas exchange of eucalypt clonal seedlings to leaf solar protectant

This experiment was carried out in acclimatized greenhouses with seedlings of two hybrid clones of Eucalyptus urophylla×Eucalyptus grandis. A sunscreen protector consisting of 62.5% calcium carbonate was sprayed on the seedlings at weekly intervals. Water stress was induced by suspending irrigation until the soil reached 30% available water and water was then replaced so that it returned to field capacity. Gas exchange and leaf water status were measured after 50 days. The experiment was set up in a 4×2 factorial randomized block design in four distinct environments:(1) temperatures less than 21.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.15 kPa;(2) intermediate temperatures of 24.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.69 kPa;(3) high temperatures of 27.0℃ and high vapor pressure deficit of 1.4 kPa; and,(4) high temperature of 27.0℃ and vapor pressure deficit below 1.10 kPa. Two leaf sun protector treatments were used, with five replications each. High atmospheric demand acted as a stress factor for the seedlings during the initial growth *** of leaf sunscreen protector provided beneficial effects in maintaining optimum water status and gas exchanges of the plants under water stress.

Comparison between Care Strategies for Patients with Osteoarthritis of the Hands Based on the Use of Joint Protection, Assistive Technology and Exercises

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling disease that can affect 6% to 12% of the adult population and more than a third of people over 65 years of age. Purpose: To assess whether a group of people with hand osteoarthritis (hOA) who received different types of treatment improved their function after two years of follow-up. Method: The entire sample (n = 97) underwent three follow-up assessments regarding anthropometric parameters of the upper limbs and ability to perform functional activities. Subsequently, the sample was divided into two groups for the intervention periods, called the First Period (n = 73) and the Second Period (n = 24);the First Period kept the same protocol with orientations, and the Second Period went to an intervention with orientation strength exercises and use of orthosis. Findings: In the separate analysis of the three questions of the daSH pain module, no differences were found between the assessment moments for groups of guidelines, treatment, or symptoms. Significant effects were observed for F(2, 162) = 3.5, p = 0.033, η2 = 0.04, and interaction for moments and intervention F(2, 162) = 4.3, p = 0.016, η2 = 0.05. Implications: It can be concluded that only guidance treatment does not benefit patients with hand osteoarthritis. In contrast, guidance, exercise, and orthosis treatment can significantly improve the disease.

Cytomegalovirus is the most frequent agent of congenital viral infections,affecting approximately 0.2%-2.4%of live births in different countries[1-7].Universal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborns is not a standard practice considering cost-benefit issues and viabil-ity of diagnostic ***,most newborns are asympto-matic and there is no effective treatment for this population[2-5].

Helicobacter pylori(***)is a bacterium that infects more than a half of world’s *** it is mainly related to the development of gastroduodenal diseases,several studies have shown that such infection may also influence the development and severity of various extragastric *** to the current evidence,whereas this bacterium is a risk factor for some of these manifestations,it might play a protective role in other pathological *** that context,when considered the gastrointestinal tract,*** positivity have been related to Inflammatory Bowel Disease,Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,Hepatic Carcinoma,Cholelithiasis,and ***,lower serum levels of iron and vitamin B12 have been found in patients with *** infection,leading to the emergence of anemias in a portion of *** regards to neurological manifestations,a growing number of studies have associated that bacterium with multiple sclerosis,Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,and Guillain-Barré***,the risk of developing cardiovascular disorders,such as atherosclerosis,is also influenced by the *** that,the ***-associated inflammation may also lead to increased insulin resistance,leading to a higher risk of diabetes mellitus among infected ***,the occurrence of dermatological and ophthalmic disorders have also been related to that *** this sense,this minireview aims to gather the main studies associating *** infection with extragastric conditions,and also to explore the main mechanisms that may explain the role of *** in those diseases.

Small-scale edaphic heterogeneity as a floristic-structural complexity driver in Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests tree communities

Our work aimed to test the hypothesis that soil microscale heterogeneity act as a community ecological driver,increasing diversity and promoting structural shifts on the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest(SDTF)tree *** evaluated the relationship between microscale edaphic variations and floristic–structural patterns of tree communities in a SDTF fragment located in the southern end of the Brazilian Caatinga *** and soil data were obtained through 27 sample units of 400 m2(20 m 920 m),within each one we measured and identified at species level all arboreal individuals with Circumference at the Breast Height greater or equal to 10 cm,and also collected the soil *** the data we evaluated soil variation influence on the tree community structural and floristic patterns trough generalized linear *** explained the small-scale structural and floristic variations,contributing significantly to biomass,sprouting and to floristic relationships between sample *** was also observed a possible relation of the result with the Caatinga domain biogeographic history,due the presence of Sedimentary Caatinga species,which are not expected for the study *** plays an important role in driving small-scale complexity and diversity of SDTF,but we also suggest that Caatinga biogeographic events have influence on the high heterogeneity patterns.

Potential for Use of Iron Mining Tailings Calcined in a Flash Furnace as Pozzolanic Material

This paper presents a study of the potential use of iron mining tailings as artificial pozzolan (metakaolin) after their submission to thermal treatment via calcination in a flash furnace. The research consists of the characterization of the tailings before and after calcination, chemical, mineralogical, thermogravimetric, and mechanical strength analyses were conducted. The results were compared with those for commonly used pozzolans, metakaolin, and similarities were identified. The study of the morphology of the particles before and after calcination was conducted through analyses of images obtained by scanning electronic microscope. The pozzolanic activity of the fine mining tailings calcined with flash technology was evaluated in uniaxial compression trials, which showed excellent results.
