Obstacles to advancing women’s health in Mozambique:a qualitative investigation into the perspectives of policy makers

Background: Despite substantial investment in women’s health over the past two decades, and enthusiasticgovernment support for MDG 5 and SDG 3, health indicators for women in Mozambique remain among the lowest inthe world. Maternal mortality stayed constant from 2003 to 2011, with an MMR of 408;the estimated HIV prevalencefor women of 15-24 years is over twice that for men;and only 12.1% of women are estimated to be using moderncontraception. This study explores the perspectives of policy makers in the Mozambican health system and affiliates onthe challenges that are preventing Mozambique from achieving greater gains in women’s ***: We conducted in-depth interviews with 39 senior- and mid-level policy makers in the Ministry of Health andaffiliated institutions (32 women, 7 men). Participants were sampled using a combination of systematic randomsampling and snowball sampling. Participants were asked about their experiences formulating and implementinghealth policies and programs, what is needed to improve women’s health in Mozambique, and the barriers andopportunities to achieving such ***: Participants unanimously argued that women’s health is already sufficiently prioritized in national healthpolicies and strategies in Mozambique;the problem, rather, is the implementation and execution of existing women’shealth policies and programs. Participants raised challenges related to the policy making process itself, including anever-changing, fragmented decision-making process, lack of long-term perspective, weak evaluation, and misalignmentof programs across sectors. The disproportionate influence of donors was also mentioned, with lack of ownership,rapid transitions, and vertical programming limiting the scope for meaningful change. Experimental Assessment of the Flame Resistance Properties of Firefighter Protective Ensembles, including the SPF1 Helmet

Firefighters rely on their protective gear for thermal insulation during fires. This study evaluated the flame resistance of firefighter PPE, including helmets, turnout gear, and gloves, under extreme conditions. Results showed excellent performance of the F1 helmet but identified areas for improvement in gloves and turnout gear. The study provides insights into the heat transfer properties of different PPE components and offers recommendations for enhancing firefighter safety.

This article is part of the ongoing study of the moderate geomagnetic activity of corotation. The aim here is to examine ionospheric anomalies through variations in Total Electronic Content (TEC) recorded at the Koudougou GPS station over solar cycle 24 during periods of corotation activity. Through the diurnal variations by solar phase, we observed a TEC peak at 14:00 TL. The TEC data analysed revealed winter, annual and semi-annual anomalies. However, the equinoctial anomaly was insignificant during corotation activity at the Koudougou station during solar cycle 24.

The Outcomes of Pregnancy in Patients with Cirrhosis in a Low-Income Country

Pregnancy in cirrhotic-woman is a rare event [1] [2]. It causes particular risks related to liver disease and its treatments, with maternal and fetal consequences. The largest reported series to date is by Welton’s with 13 cases [3]. In Africa, few cases were reported. The purpose of this work was to report the hepatic and obstetric complications in pregnant women in Burkina Faso, a low-income country. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection covering the period from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2023. All the women diagnosed with cirrhosis through clinical basis, biological and imaging arguments associated with a pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound were included. A total of ten women were included in the study. Among them, two were known cirrhotics and were being followed. In the other eight cases, cirrhosis was discovered during pregnancy. Eight women were HBsAg positive and two of them had only the contact marker of hepatitis B virus (anti- HBc antibody). The evolution was, ascitic decompensation in nine cases, digestive hemorrhage due to rupture of esophageal varices in two cases, nine cases of anemia, two cases of ascitic fluid infection and one case of conjunctival jaundice. Two cases of probable hepatocellular carcinoma were noted with one case of extensive portal thrombosis. The evolution was without maternal complications in one case. Regarding fetal and neonatal complications, there were three cases of hypotrophy, one case of prematurity, one case of acute neonatal distress, two cases of fetal death in utero and one case of fetal tachycardia. Four pregnancies had a favorable evolution without any complications. The association of cirrhosis and pregnancy is an uncommon event, and maternal and fetal complications can occur, making this pregnancy a high-risk pregnancy.

From a harmonized structural map at the scale of a portion of SW Burkina Faso (90 × 80 km2), we targeted prospective zones on the basis of structural criteria and structure-geology relationships. The map was constructed from an aeromagnetic image, and the geology was deduced from old geological maps. The procedure involved extracting the magnetic fabric and deducing the deformation gradients, which led to the identification of shear zones. Analysis and interpretation of the structural geometry of the obtained structural pattern led us to target areas of interference between structures or geology-structures interplays, which are conducive to the deposition of metallic elements. The subsequent overlay of known gold prospects and deposits documented in the region revealed the validity of the predefined prospects. This result reinforces the applicability of the methodology as a first-order regional approach to mineral exploration.

Sub-Saharan Africa is witnessing a proliferation of photovoltaic(PV)waste due to the increasing number of solar PV power *** waste(panels,batteries,electrical cables,mounting structures,and inverters)consists of elements such as mercury,cadmium,chromium,lead,copper,aluminum,fluorinated compounds,and plastics that are toxic to human health and the environment if a proper management system is not *** many studies worldwide have focused on PV waste management,very few have been conducted in sub-Saharan *** study aims to investigate the current PV waste management system in Burkina Faso,determine stakeholder profiles,and propose strategies to enhance the existing *** research,interviews,questionnaires,and field visits were used in the *** survey showed that young people,mainly under 30 years of age and with a primary education,dominate(70%)in terms of PV waste collection and repair activities,while the more technical recycling and export activities are carried out mainly(88%)by stakeholders older than 40 years and with a secondary education(60%).Among the older stakeholders,100%are aware of the hazardous nature of PV waste,whereas 36%are young *** an environmental perspective,the main source of contamination observed is the release of lead-rich sulfuric acids into water and soil during the collection and repair *** the recycling of batteries and electrical cables,toxic fumes are emitted into the air,and recycling residues rich in toxic substances are *** reduce risks to human health and the environment when managing PV waste,the introduction of legislation,the multiplication of collection points and appropriate infrastructures,the training and awareness-raising of stakeholders,and the extended responsibility of manufacturers are *** on the economic feasibility of setting up formal management structures are needed to complete this work.

Physical and coupled fully three-dimensional numerical modeling of pressurized bottom outlet flushing processes in reservoirs

Sediment deposition in reservoirs is an important research topic in engineering practice. Reservoir sedimentation has the potential to affect flood levels, drainage for agricultural land, pump station and hydropower operation as well as navigation. This paper describes the development of a coupled fully three-dimensional(3 D) numerical model for the prediction of the local sediment flushing scour upstream of the bottom outlet. The presented numerical model solves the Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with the k-ε turbulence model which includes both sediment transport and hydrodynamic parameters. The proposed coupled fully 3 D numerical model is used to simulate experimental tests based on non-cohesive sediment. The geometric features of the scour hole(temporal and spatial hole development) upstream of the bottom outlet were reasonably well predicted compared to the experimental data. Furthermore, the velocity field upstream of the bottom outlet was in good agreement with measurements. The proposed numerical model for bottom outlet flushing was, therefore, validated because of its ability to accurately predict the scour hole development during the flushing process. The proposed numerical model can be considered reliable provided that the model is correctly calibrated and set up to reflect the conditions of a particular case study.

DNA testing for biological relationships is becoming increasingly common in Burkina Faso. STR analysis remains the most reliable technique for resolving disputes or claims in court regarding biological relationships. This study aimed to establish the links of biological relationships between subjects by analyzing 21 STR loci. The participants were 14 individuals referred to CERBA by the Justice in 2022. Oral or blood samples were taken for each subject. DNA was extracted, and the analysis of DNA polymorphism by PowerPlex® 21 Kit (Part No. DC8902) was performed by capillary electrophoresis on the ABI PRISM 3130 sequencer. DNA profiles were compiled using the GeneMapper IDX software version 1.2. Of the fourteen subjects examined, twelve of these samples had complete genetic profiles, while the other two had partial and absent profiles. The results confirmed the inclusion of three cases of Paternity, one case of maternity, one case of a relationship of brotherhood, and the exclusion of one case of maternity and one case of a relationship of brotherhood. DNA tests improve the resolution of filiations, but they require ethical and cultural awareness and a strengthened legal framework to prevent and protect society.

Perspectives in restoration: storage and pretreatments of seeds for better germination of Sudanian savanna-woodland species

Insufficient knowledge of the germination ecology of local species is one of the main constraints to restoration of degraded rural lands. We tested seeds from fourteen Sudanian savanna species targeted for restoration for their response to two different pretreatments（conventional and prolonged acid pretreatments） and two different storage conditions（ambient room conditions and refrigerator at 4 C）. For 6 of the studied species, longer soaking in sulphuric acid significantly improved germination rates and also reduced the germination time of some species. Storage condition, in general did not affect germination rates except for two species where cool storage depressed germination. The practical implication is that, for the species tested, when mature seeds are collected for plantation in the upcoming rainy season, there is no need to invest in infrastructure and energy for storing in cold *** study also revealed that in general when seeds are stored in ambient conditions from the time of collection up to seeding time, although germination rate does not increase, germination time is shortened and this could be of great interest in synchronizing germination in real field conditions.
