Globally,habitat degradation is accelerating,especially in the *** to interface habitats can increase environmental overlap among nonhuman primates,people,and domestic animals and change stress levels in wildlife,leading to changes in their risk of parasite ***,the direction and consequences of these changes are unclear,since animals may benefit by exploiting human resources(e.g.,improving nutritional health by eating nutritious crops)and decreasing susceptibility to infection,or interactions with humans may lead to chronic stress and increased susceptibility to *** monkeys are an excellent model to understand parasitic disease transmission because of their tolerance to anthropogenic *** we quantify the gastrointestinal parasites of a group of vervet monkeys(Chlorocebus aethiops)near Lake Nabugabo,Uganda,that frequently overlaps with people in their use of a highly modified *** compare the parasites found in this population to seven other sites where vervet monkey gastrointestinal parasites have been identi*** vervets of Lake Nabugabo have the greatest richness of parasites documented to *** discuss how this may reflect differences in sampling intensity or differences in the types of habitat where vervet parasites have been sampled.

The fluxes of heavy metals and magnetite, a fly-ash component, from coal burning, to sediments of the Kunming Lake in Beijing have increased measurably over the last fifty years. Ages were introduced to the sediment strata through Pb-210 geochronologies. Even with a doubling of coal usage by the year 2000, the anthropogenic metal fluxes will still be less than those recorded in metropolitan Tokyo and U.S. lakes.

Hearing loss and cognitive decline among older adults with atrial fibrillation:the SAGE-AF study

Objective To examine the association between hearing loss and cognitive function cross-sectionally and prospectively among older adults with atrial fibrillation(AF).Methods Patients with AF≥65-year-old(n=1244)in the SAGE(Systematic Assessment of Geriatric Elements)-AF study were recruited from five internal medicine or cardiology clinics in Massachusetts and *** was assessed by a structured questionnaire at *** function was assessed by Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)at baseline and one *** impairment was defined as score≤23 on the *** associations between hearing loss and cognitive function were examined by multivariable adjusted logistic *** Participants with hearing loss(n=451,36%)were older,more likely to be male,and have depressive symptoms than patients without hearing *** baseline,528(42%)participants were cognitively *** with hearing loss were significantly more likely to have cognitive impairment at baseline[adjusted odds ratio(OR)=1.37,95%confidence interval(CI):1.05–1.81].Among the 662 participants who did not have cognitive impairment at baseline and attended the one-year follow-up visit,106(16%)developed incident cognitive *** with,versus those without,hearing loss were significantly more likely to develop incident cognitive impairment at one year(adjusted OR=1.68,95%CI:1.07–2.64).Conclusions Hearing loss is a prevalent but under-recognized factor associated with cognitive impairment in patients with *** for hearing loss may be indicated among these patients to identify individuals at high-risk for adverse outcomes.

A meta-analysis of 1-year outcomes of transcatheter versus surgical aortic valve replacement in low-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis

Background Transcatheter aortic valve replacement(TAVR)for the treatment symptomatic severe aortic stenosis(AS)is indicated in patients with intermediate or higher surgical *** trials showed TAVR,and surgical aortic valve replacement(SAVR)perform similarly at 1-year for the composite outcomes of mortality,stroke and *** performed a comprehensive meta-analysis to compare individual outcomes at 1-year for TAVR compared to SAVR in low-risk *** Pub Med,Embase,and Cochrane central were searched for all the randomized controlled trials(RCTs)that reported 1-year comparative outcomes of TAVR and surgical aortic valve replacement(SAVR).Our conclusions are based upon the random-effects model using Der Simonian-Laird *** Data from 4 trials and 2887 randomized patients showed that TAVR had lower rates of all-cause mortality,cardiovascular mortality,and atrial fibrillation compared to SAVR at 1-year follow-up(Ptality or *** follow-up of RCTs is needed to determine the durability of clinical benefits in TAVR over SAVR in low-risk patients.

Genetic Variation in <i>Salamandra</i><i>infraimmaculata</i>from Different Habitats Using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism

The purpose of the present study was to examine the genetic variation in Salamandra infraimmaculata from different breeding site habitats using the Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) method. The results of the dendogram from a hierarchical cluster analysis show that the grouping of S. infraimmaculata as cluster 5 differs from all the other clusters, including the St1 (Tel-Dan stream) population, which was the most predictable. Five Haplogroups (Hg) were characterized. The mean number of alleles per locus in each population (Ne) ranged from 10.566 (Sp1) to 2.720 (Po6). An average estimated heterozygosity (He) by population ranged from 0.100 (Po6) to 0.186 (St1). Population St1, a permanent breeding site where water was available all year round, exhibited the highest level of polymorphism, while population Po6, from the ephemeral breeding site, exhibited the lowest level of polymorphism. Gene flow between clusters showed that clusters 3 and 4 are sources of migrants and also receive gene flow, while clusters 1 and 2 may be a source of migrants but may not receive much gene flow. A phylogenetic analysis, based on clustering using Nei’s genetic distance, demonstrated that the Tel-Dan population is located on a separate branch within its sub-population. The conclusion of the present study shows that the genetic divergence among isolated populations is not correlated to distance but is affected by the variation of habitats.
