A half-m.tallic full-Heusler m._(2)VAl alloy is a potential p-type therm.electric m.terial that can directly generate electricity from.waste heat via the Seebeck *** practical use,the Seebeck coefficient S of m._(2)VAl should be increased while m.intaining a high electrical conductivity s from.its half-m.tallic ***,we achieved this objective through antisite defect ***,it was predicted that the S was m.xim.zed by regulating partial density of states of m.jority-spin sp-electrons through the control of the fraction of antisite defect,f_(AD),between V and Al atom. in m._(2)***-m.ntally,a significant increase in S and a slight decrease in s were observed for an m._(2)VAl sam.le with an optim.l fAD=33%,enhancing the therm.electric power factor PF by 2.7 tim.s from.an m._(2)VAl sam.le with fAD=14%.Furtherm.re,we com.ined the antisite defect engineering with a partial substitution *** m._(2)V(Al_(0.96)Si_(0.04))sam.le with fAD=33%exhibited the highest PF=4.5×10^(-4)W·m.(-1)·K^(-2)at 767 K am.ng the *** m.xim.m.dim.nsionless figure-of-m.rit zT of the m._(2)V(Al_(0.96)Si_(0.04))sam.le with f_(AD)=33%was m.asured to be 3.4×10^(-2)at 767 K,which is the highest am.ng the p-type half-m.tallic full-Heusler alloys.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determ.ne factors correlated with the progression of irreversible visual disturbance in Behcet’s disease (BD) with ocular involvem.nt. m.thods: Forty-seven BD patients with ocular inflam.ation, who presented with the first ocular episode, and who had been followed continuously for 5-10 years in our hospital, were studied. Charts were reviewed for gender, onset age of uveitis, com.lete or incom.lete type BD, HLA-B51 status, final visual acuity at the last rem.ssion period, m.an num.er of ocular attacks per year, and clinical findings of iridocyclitis with profuse hypopyon, strong vitreous opacity blocking the observation of retinal vessels, diffuse retinal vasculitis, and exudates with hem.rrhage within the retinal vascular arcade. Results: Patients with a visual acuity of 20/200 and those with >20/200 differed significantly in the m.an num.er of ocular attacks per year and clinical findings of strong vitreous opacity and exudates within the retinal vascular arcade, but not with regard to the other factors. In addition, the frequency of ocular attacks showed a significant negative correlation with the outcom. of visual acuity. Logistic regression analysis indicated a signifi-cant association of an average of m.re than three ocular attacks per year, strong vitreous opacity, and exudates within the retinal vascular arcade with poor visual outcom.. Conclusions: This study indicates that m.re than three ocular attacks per year, strong vitreous opacity, and exudates within the retinal vascular arcade are the risk and prognostic factors for a poor outcom. of visual acuity in BD patients.

In the dissolution step of spent nuclear fuel, there is a world-concern problem.that zirconium.m.lybdate hydrate precipitates as a byproduct, and accum.lates in som. reprocessing equipm.nts. In order to prevent this accum.lation, we have developed a new m.thod based on the controlled reaction crystallization of zirconium.m.lybdate hydrate （Zm.） in the reprocessing solution, followed by solid liquid separation. In order to m.asure the particle size of Zm., batch crystallization experim.nts were conducted by varying nitric acid concentration and operating tem.erature. In result, alm.st all particle sizes scatter around 1μm.on average, despite the higher concentration of nitric aid and operating tem.erature, and then sm.ll particles grow up as an aggregate sticking to the crystallizer. m.reover, polym.rph and color changing were observed by varying the concentration of nitric acid and reaction tim.. These results suggest that crystal color and adhesiveness are closely related to the particle size of Zm.. And the control of nitric acid concentration and sm.ll particle growth would be the useful technique to prevent the Zm. sticking.

AIm. To investigate genetic diversity of Helicobacter pylori （H. pylorl） cell division-related gene A （cdrA） and its effect on the host ***： Inactivation of H. py/ori cdrA, which is involved in ceil division and m.rphological elonga- tion, has a role in chronic persistent infections. Ge- netic property of H. pylori cdrA was evaluated using polym.rase chain reaction and sequencing in 128 （77 Am.rican and 51 Japanese） clinical isolates obtained from.48 and 51 patients, respectively. Enzym.-linked im.unosorbent assay was perform.d to m.asure in- terleukin-8 （IL-8） secretion with gastric biopsy speci- m.ns obtained from.Am.rican patients colonized with cdrA-positive or -negative strains and AGS cells co- cultured with wild-type HPK5 （cdrA-positive） or its de- rivative HPKT510 （cdrA-disruptant）. Furtherm.re, the cytotoxin-associated gene A （cagA） status （transloca- tion and phosphorylation） and kinetics of transcription factors [nuclear factor-kappa B （NF-~：B） and inhibition kappa B] were investigated in AGS cells co-cultured with HPK5, HPKT510 and its derivative HPKSCA （cagA- disruptant） by western blotting analysis with im.uno- precipitation. RESULTS： Genetic diversity of the H. pylori cdrA gene dem.nstrated that the cdrA status segregated into two categories including four allele types, cdrA-positive （al- lele types, I and 11 ） and cdrA-negative （allele types; 111 and IV） categories, respectively. Alm.st all Japanese isolates were cdrA-positive （ 1 ： 7.8% and 11 ： 90.2%）, whereas 16.9% of Am.rican isolates were cdrA-positive （11） and 83.1% were cdrA-negative （nl： 37.7% and IV： 45.5%）, indicating extended diversity of cdrA in individual Am.rican isolates. Com.arison of each isolate from.different regions （antrum.and corpus） in the stom.ch of 29 Am.ricans revealed that cdrA status was identical in both isolates from.different regions in 17 cases. AIm.To exam.ne whether nizatidine stim.lates duodenal HCO_3^- secretion in rats by inhibiting AChE activity. m.THODS Under pentobarbital anesthesia,a proxim.l duodenal loop was perfused with saline,and the HCO_3 secretion was m.asured at pH 7.0 using a pH-stat m.thod and by adding 10m. ***,neostigm.ne,carbachol or fam.tidine was adm.nistered *** a single injection. RESULTS Intravenous adm.nistration of nizatidine(3-30 m./kg)dose-dependently increased duodenal HCO_3^- secretion,and the effect at 10m./kg was equivalent to that obtained by carbachol at 0.01 m./*** nizatidine action was observed at the sam. dose range that inhibited acid secretion and enhanced gastric m.tility,m.m.cked by *** of neostigm.ne(0.03 m./kg),and significantly attenuated by bilateral vagotom. and prior s.c. adm.nistration of atropine but not by indom.thacin,a cyclooxygenase inhibitor,or N^G-nitro-L-arginine m.thyl ester,a NO synthase *** HCO_3^- secretory response to acetylcholine(0.001 m./kg)was significantly potentiated by the concurrent adm.nistration of nizatidine(3m./kg,i.v.).The IC_(50)of nizatidine for AChE of rat erythrocytes was 1.4×10^(-6)m.about 12 tim.s higher than that of *** fam.tidine(>10^(-3)m. 30m./kg,i.v.)nor cisapride(> 10^(-3)m. 3m./kg,i.v.)had any influence on AChE activity or duodenal HCO_3^- *** dam.ge induced by acid perfusion(100 m. HCI for 4 h)in the presence of indom.thacin was significantly prevented by nizatidine and neostigm.ne,at the doses that increased the HCO_3^- secretion. CONCLUSION Nizatidine stim.lates duodenal HCO_3^- secretion,in both vagal-dependent and atropine-sensitive m.nners,and the action is associated with the anti-AChE activity of this agent.

To determ.ne the possibility that diabetes m.llitus prom.tes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinom. via glyceraldehyde (GA)-derived advanced glycation-end products (GA-AGEs). m.THODSPANC-1, a hum.n pancreatic cancer cell line, was treated with 1-4 m.ol/L GA for 24 h. The cell viability and intracellular GA-AGEs were m.asured by WST-8 assay and slot blotting. m.reover, im.unostaining of PANC-1 cells with an anti-GA-AGE antibody was perform.d. Western blotting (WB) was used to analyze the m.lecular weight of GA-AGEs. Heat shock proteins 90α, 90β, 70, 27 and cleaved caspase-3 were analyzed by WB. In addition, PANC-1 cells were treated with GA-AGEs-bovine serum.album.n (GA-AGEs-BSA), as a m.del of extracellular GA-AGEs, and proliferation of PANC-1 cells was m.asured. RESULTSIn PANC-1 cells, GA induced the production of GA-AGEs and cell death in a dose-dependent m.nner. PANC-1 cell viability was approxim.tely 40% with a 2 m.ol/L GA treatm.nt and decreased to alm.st 0% with a 4 m.ol/L GA treatm.nt (each significant difference was P m.ol/L GA produced 6.4 and 21.2 μg/m. protein of GA-AGEs, respectively (P m. high-m.lecular-weight (Hm.) com.lexes of HSP90β, HSP70, and HSP27 was observed following adm.nistration of GA. We considered Hm. com.lexes to be dim.rs and trim.rs with GA-AGEs-m.diated aggregation. Cleaved caspase-3 could not be detected with WB. Furtherm.re, 10 and 20 μg/m. GA-AGEs-BSA was 27% and 34% greater than that of control cells, respectively (P m.y prom.te the proliferation of other pancreatic cancer cells.
