Synergistic Antibacterial Performance of a Cu/WO<sub>3</sub>-Added PTFE Particulate Superhydrophobic Composite under Visible-Light Exposure

Addition of TiO2 to a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particle-dispersed composite contributes to the self-cleaning properties of the water-repellent composite. However, its application is limited to outdoor usage or under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. In this study, a novel visible-light-sensitive photocatalytic and superhydrophobic material was developed by adding Cu/WO3 to a PTFE particulate composite material to overcome this deficit. A remarkable property of this novel composite material is the synergistic antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylo-coccus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus compared with the addition of Cu/WO3 without PTFE particles material. During 24-h exposure in visible light at 2000 lx, the number of viable cells of the three strains on the surface of the 8wt% Cu/WO3-added PTFE particulate composite decreased from 2 – 4 × 105 colony-formation units (CFUs) to less than 10, the limit of detection. This bactericidal rate is four times higher than that of 8wt% Cu/WO3 without PTFE particles material, which is attributed to the air trapped in the rough surface of the novel material providing additional oxygen to the photocatalytic reaction. Even for exposure to visible light at 100 lx, the decrease in CFUs of E. coli on the 12wt% Cu/WO3-added PTFE particulate composite reached nearly 2.0 logs. The characterization of the Cu/WO3-added PTFE particulate composite indicated that the composite material containing 80wt% PTFE maintained a superhydrophobic or water-repellent property with a water contact angle >150。, although the Cu/WO3 in the composite material remained hydrophilic under visible light. The Cu/WO3-added PTFE particulate composite displayed photo-catalytic reactions to decompose oleic acid adsorbed on its surface and gaseous acetaldehyde under UV-A and visible-light illumination. Text mining, also known as discovering knowledge from the text, which has emerged as a possible solution for the current information explosion, refers to the process of extracting non-trivial and useful patterns from unstructured text. Among the general tasks of text mining such as text clustering, summarization, etc, text classification is a subtask of intelligent information processing, which employs unsupervised learning to construct a classifier from training text by which to predict the class of unlabeled text. Because of its simplicity and objectivity in performance evaluation, text classification was usually used as a standard tool to determine the advantage or weakness of a text processing method, such as text representation, text feature selection, etc. In this paper, text classification is carried out to classify the Web documents collected from XSSC Website （http：//***）. The performance of support vector machine （SVM） and back propagation neural network （BPNN） is compared on this task. Specifically, binary text classification and multi-class text classification were conducted on the XSSC documents. Moreover, the classification results of both methods are combined to improve the accuracy of classification. An experiment is conducted to show that BPNN can compete with SVM in binary text classification; but for multi-class text classification, SVM performs much better. Furthermore, the classification is improved in both binary and multi-class with the combined method.

A MODIFIED ANT-BASED TEXT CLUSTERING ALGORITHM WITH SEMANTIC SIMILARITY MEASURE

Ant-based text clustering is a promising technique that has attracted great research attention. This paper attempts to improve the standard ant-based text-clustering algorithm in two dimensions. On one hand, the ontology-based semantic similarity measure is used in conjunction with the traditional vector-space-model-based measure to provide more accurate assessment of the similarity between documents. On the other, the ant behavior model is modified to pursue better algorithmic performance. Especially, the ant movement rule is adjusted so as to direct a laden ant toward a dense area of the same type of items as the ant＇s carrying item, and to direct an unladen ant toward an area that contains an item dissimilar with the surrounding items within its Moore neighborhood. Using WordNet as the base ontology for assessing the semantic similarity between documents, the proposed algorithm is tested with a sample set of documents excerpted from the Reuters-21578 corpus and the experiment results partly indicate that the proposed algorithm perform better than the standard ant-based text-clustering algorithm and the k-means algorithm.

TOWARD COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE OF ONLINE COMMUNITIES:A PRIMITIVE CONCEPTUAL MODEL

Inspired by the ideas of Swarm Intelligence and the ＂global brain＂, a concept of ＂community intelligence＂ is suggested in the present paper, reflecting that some ＂intelligent＂ features may emerge in a Web-mediated online community from interactions and knowledge-transmissions between the community members. This possible research field of community intelligence is then examined under the backgrounds of ＂community＂ and ＂intelligence＂ researches. Furthermore, a conceptual model of community intelligence is developed from two views. From the structural view, the community intelligent system is modeled as a knowledge supernetwork that is comprised of triple interwoven networks of the media network, the human network, and the knowledge network. Furthermore, based on a dyad of knowledge in two forms of ＂knowing＂ and ＂knoware＂, the dynamic view describes the basic mechanics of the formation and evolution of ＂community intelligence＂. A few relevant research issues are shortly discussed on the basis of the proposed conceptual model.

Fuel consumption reduction effect of pre-acceleration before gliding of a vehicle with free-wheeling

Advanced fuel economy strategies are expected to reduce the fuel consumption of *** internal combustion engine(ICE)driving vehicle equipped with free-wheeling turns off the fuel injection and decouples the engine from the drivetrain when the driving force is not *** paper proposes a method to reduce the fuel consumption of a vehicle equipped with ***,an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the fuel consumption of a vehicle with free-wheeling when the traveling distance,the initial and final speed are specified and the vehicle needs to glide before arriving at the end point for fuel *** speed profile of the vehicle,engine operating point,and engine on/off timing are obtained as the results of the *** analytical and numerical analyses results demonstrate the effectiveness and the fuel-saving mechanism of the obtained speed *** main finding of the analyses is that rather than starting a gliding stage immediately after an acceleration or a constant speed stage,adding a pre-acceleration stage before the gliding stage is more fuel-economic under some conditions independent of the complexity of the vehicle *** obtained speed profile including a pre-acceleration stage is applied to a driving scenario including traffic *** results demonstrate the effectiveness of the pre-acceleration stage in reducing fuel consumption for a vehicle equipped with free-wheeling.

DCWord: A Novel Deep Learning Approach to Deceptive Review Identification by Word Vectors

Due to the anonymous and free-for-all characteristics of online forums,it is very hard for human beings to differentiate deceptive reviews from truthful *** paper proposes a deep learning approach for text representation called DCWord (Deep Context representation by Word vectors) to deceptive review *** basic idea is that since deceptive reviews and truthful reviews are composed by writers without and with real experience on using the online purchased goods or services,there should be different contextual information of words between *** state-of-the-art techniques in seeking best linguistic features for representation,we use word vectors to characterize contextual information of words in deceptive and truthful reviews *** average-pooling strategy (called DCWord-A) and maxpooling strategy (called DCWord-M) are used to produce review vectors from word *** results on the Spam dataset and the Deception dataset demonstrate that the DCWord-M representation with LR (Logistic Regression) produces the best performances and outperforms state-of-the-art techniques on deceptive review ***,the DCWord-M strategy outperforms the DCWord-A strategy in review representation for deceptive review *** outcome of this study provides potential implications for online review management and business intelligence of deceptive review identification.

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide and Adenosine Triphosphate Oscillations Caused by Gradual Entry of Substrates within Mitochondria

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) oscillation was observed when the isolated mitochondria were immersed in a pyruvate solution. In addition, when an adenosine diphosphate (ADP) was added to the mitochondrial suspension containing pyruvate, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) oscillation was observed as well as NADH oscillation. At this time, the pH within mitochondria also oscillated. It was found that the oscillatory reaction of NADH caused by the membrane permeation of pyruvate continues, causing the oscillation of NADH and H+ in the subsequent reactions. The pH oscillation led to the ATP oscillation. It is considered that the oscillatory reaction caused by the gradual entry of pyruvate into mitochondria was thought to be carried over to both the citric acid cycle and the respiratory chain, ultimately leading to the ATP oscillation in oxidative phosphorylation. Similarly, it was found that membrane permeation of malate causes the gradual occurrence of NADH, at which point NADH oscillates, followed by an oscillatory reaction of the respiratory chain, and finally ATP oscillation. It was found that the oscillations of NADH and ATP occur without going through the citric acid cycle. Oscillations of NADH and other intermediates in both the citric acid cycle and respiratory chain were also confirmed by experiments using semipermeable membranes. These results support our hypothesis that the gradual entry of the substrate by membrane permeation triggers an oscillatory reaction of the enzyme, which is also carried over to subsequent reactions.

A Method to Solve PBL Issues and to Improve Project Management Competencies of Students

It is generally accepted that Project-Based Learning(PBL)is very valuable in preparing students to become working members of ***,some issues have been recognized with PBL such as:(1)some students lack an active attitude or ride on the coattails of their teammates in their PBL team work;(2)a range of achievement levels among project teams;(3)spending most of their time to discuss the objective and the goal;and(4)not well managed as a *** Scheduling Method(IScM)and the associated tool called Deliverables Dependency Matrix(DDM)have been proposed to create a highly feasible project schedule for a product *** was noticed that they might have the potential to resolve these PBL issues because the schedule creation is a core part of project management and includes most of all factors to manage PBL as a *** trials of the application with Modified-IScM(M-IScM)and DDM to PBL courses have been *** first trial was intended to evaluate if M-IScM and DDM could resolve the PBL issues.A lecture prior to the second PBL with some findings from the first trial was given to students to improve their project management *** a result,it was confirmed that M-IScM and DDM had the potential to resolve the PBL issues and revealed that PBL had two internal project types,the Goal Search Project and the Goal Oriented Project with the associated work processes and ***,the Goal Oriented Project could be divided into the Development Project and the Value Creation *** and utilizing these project types will improve the competencies of students regarding project management to produce a good outcome in PBL,and help develop the leadership and fundamental skills to be a capable business person.

Long-term and Cross-sectoral Management of Interconnected Events： The Case of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident

In a world-shocking nuclear disaster occurred at Fukushima in 2011, multi-faceted consequences have manifested in not only direct and indirect but also tangible and intangible way in social, political, and economic domains. At present six year later, original risk issues, such as health, environmental, and financial risks, were complexly connected to each other, and have transformed to the wicked or complicated problems. This paper addresses the following four problems that we are faced with： prolonged evacuation and return to hometown, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings issues, nuclear regulatory issues, and nuclear energy policy and business. The authors discuss the reasons why above-noted situations arise from nuclear disaster in terms of endogenous factors embedded in socio-technical nuclear system in Japan and some common causes across the wicked problems. The wicked problems are also closely connected with each other, and become super-wicked problem. Among others, Japan＇s energy transition policy aiming at low carbon society tends to deviate politically and now at crossroad. Finally, the authors describe some perspectives and challenges required to govern interconnected events, as lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
