Relative importance of biological and human-associated factors for alien plant invasions in Hokkaido, Japan

Aims The invasion success of alien plants is strongly affected by both biological and human-associated *** of the rela-tive contribution of each factor is important not only for the further understanding of invasion processes but also for the better manage-ment of invasion risk,particularly in protected areas of high con-servation ***,we quantified the relative importance of species biological traits and association with a human activity,***,in explaining the invasion success of alien plants across the entire region and in protected areas in Hokkaido,*** As a quantitative measure of invasion success,the distribution ex-tent of naturalized populations across the entire prefecture and in protected areas was calculated for 63 alien species with equal residence time based on species occurrence records at a spatial resolution of 5-km mesh grid *** each species,we identi-fied seven biological traits(seed mass,dispersal mode,maximum plant height,capability of vegetative reproduction,flowering start time and period and life span)and two human-associated factors(introduction purpose and cultivation frequency for agricultural use).Cultivation frequency was determined based on the frequency of seed-sowing in pastures:(1)not sown,(2)accidentally sown as a seed contaminant and(3)intentionally sown for commercial *** importance of biological traits and human-associated factors in explaining the distribution extent was determined using an information-theoretic *** Findings In explaining the distribution extent across the entire prefecture,species biological traits and human-associated factors showed comparable importance;cultivation frequency exhibited the high-est importance value closely followed by seed mass,maximum height and flowering *** contrast,when focusing on pro-tected areas,human association was more important than bio-logical traits,as indicated by the greatest importance of cultiva

Gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic gland type:Endoscopicand clinicopathological features

Gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic gland type(GA-FG) with chief cell differentiation was recently proposed as an extremely rare type of gastric adenocarcinoma. Here, we report 4 cases of GA-FG with chief cell differentiation. Endoscopic features included a submucosal tumor shape or a flat shape, whitish discoloration and dilated vessels on the surface. The tumors were located in the upper or middle third of the stomach. All cases were preoperatively diagnosed as GA-FG by biopsy, and endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed. Resected specimens revealed well-differentiated adenocarcinomas resembling chief cells. Tumor cells were diffusely positive for pepsinogen-Ⅰ, but partially positive for H+/K+-ATPase in scattered locations around the tumor margin. Despite the presence of minimal invasion of the carcinoma into the submucosal layer, which was observed in two cases, neither lymphatic nor venous invasion was detected in any of the cases. Finally, all cases showed less aggressive clinical behavior with low grade malignancy.

A regression model-based method for indoor positioning with compound location fingerprints

This paper proposed and evaluated an estimation method for indoor *** method combines location fingerprinting and dead reckoning differently from the conventional *** uses compound location fingerprints,which are composed of radio fingerprints at multiple points of time,that is,at multiple positions,and displacements between them estimated by dead *** avoid errors accumulated from dead reckoning,the method uses short-range dead *** method was evaluated using 16 Bluetooth beacons installed in a student room with the dimensions of 11×5 m with furniture *** Received Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI)values of the beacons were collected at 30 measuring points,which were points at the intersections on a 1×1 m grid with no obstacles.A compound location fingerprint is composed of RSSI vectors at two points and a displacement vector between *** Forests(RF)was used to build regression models to estimate positions from location *** root mean square error of position estimation was 0.87 m using 16 Bluetooth *** error is lower than that received with a single-point baseline model,where a feature vector is composed of only RSSI values at one *** results suggest that the proposed method is effective for indoor positioning.

Effects of Darbepoetin-<i>α</i>on Oxidative Stress Marker in Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

Objective: Long-acting darbepoetin-α (DA) has recently been used to treat renal anemia in patients with chronic renal failure. It is considered clinically useful because its duration of action is longer than that of conventional epoetin-α. In this study, we investigated changes in the levels of the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde-modified low density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL), renal anemia, and renal function when patients were treated for chronic renal failure switched from epoetin-α to DA. Materials and Methods: The subjects included nine patients with chronic renal failure and renal anemia who were treated with epoetin-α on an outpatient basis at our department. Blood was sampled prior to the switch and at 3, 6, and 12 months after the switch. We then investigated changes in MDA-LDL, hemoglobin (Hb), and creatinine (Cr) levels. Results: There were no significant changes in MDA-LDL and Hb levels after switching to DA. A significant increase was observed in Cr levels after 12 months compared with those prior to switching. Conclusion: Once-a-month administration of DA did not result in an increase in oxidative stress, and therefore, DA is considered capable of controlling renal anemia.
